To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bakerhill, in the county of Barbour and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain- Coverers, of which the following is a specification.

'This invention relates to a grain coverer and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple device for rolling the earth over the grains of corn and other similar seeds after the same has been deposited in a furrow by the planter.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simple corn coverer which may easily be attached to or detached from a beam similar to the draw bar commonly employed for plowing.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a grain coverer which consists of comparatively few parts and issimple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.

For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;

The figure represents a perspective view of the invention and illustrating the method of attaching the covering board to the beam.

Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the beam 1 has the usual clevis 2 mounted on its end to which a draft animal may be attached when the device is in operation. The handles 3 extend rearwardly and upwardly from the opposite end of the beam and may be grasped by the person using the device for properly guiding the corn covering board which is carried by the beam.

The grain covering board 4 consists of a substantially rectangular piece constructed from wood or other suitable light material. For supporting the grain covering board in its proper position and at the proper angle I have provided a supporting member 5 adapted to be fastened to the beam 1. supporting member consists of a strip of strap iron bent intermediate its endsto provide the attaching bars 67 disposed side by side for providing an elongated slot 7 through which fastening bolts 8 are projected, the said bolts being secured to the beam 1 at the opposite side thereof. At the rear end of the upper attaching bar, the strap iron is bent downwardly and outwardly to providean extension arm 9 and from the end of the extension arm,- a vertical supporting member 10 is, projected, formed by bending the strap iron outwardly from the end of the arm 9. The other attaching arm 6 is shorter than the uppermost attaching arm and the strap iron is bent from the terminal of the shorter arm downwardly and then under and across the bottom edge of the beam 1 thus providing a second extension arm 11 similar to the extension arm 9. Froni the outer end of the extension arm 11, the strap arm is bent downwardly to provide a vertical supporting member 12 similar to the member 10 and the members 10 and 12 are spaced apart far enough to provide a substantial support for the cover board 4:. The free ends of the strap arm are wider for a portion of their length than the intermediate portion thereof and this widened portion begins at the end of the said vertical members 10 and 12. At this point the strap iron is twisted and the ends are bent forwardly, slightly at an angle to provide angularly disposed retaining flanges 13. The cover board 4 is fastened to the retaining flanges 13 by the bolts let and the cover board is thereby disposed at an angle, the same being tilted slightly rearwardly as shown by the drawing. The cover board also extends diagonally crosswise by virtue of the fact that the vertical arm 12 is disposed forwardly of the vertical arm 10, thus causing one of the flanges 13 to be in a position ahead of the other flange 13. This double angular position of the cover board will cause the earth to roll toward the furrow to cover the seed and all of the earth in proximity to the furrow will be turned into the same.

F astened to the rear ends of the beam 1 at each side thereof is a brace bar 15 which projects forwardly and downwardly and has its terminal connected to one of the vertical arms 10 and 12. This brace bar prevents the extension arms 9 and the vertical members 10 and 12 from buckling when a great quantity of earth is gathered up by the cover board.

The position of the fastening members 8 in the slot 7 will permit the blade'or cover board to be adjusted toward and away from the end of the plow beam, that is forwardly longitudinal adjustment of considerable length is desirable.

Furthermore, the lowermost of the bars 6 is shorter than the uppermost bar as above stated, and the space thereby provided at the rear end of the bar 6 will permit the device to be readily attached or detached when the members 15 are disconnected from the plow beam. The members 15, are of course, adjustably connected to the plow beam as indicated by the plurality of openings in the rear end of the member 15 shown fully in the drawings.

From the foregoing it will be observed that a very imple and durable grain coverer has been provided, the-details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended.

I claim! The combination with a plow beam, and a cover board disposed diagonally beneath the plow beam, of a supporting member attached to the said beam and comprising a pair of attaching bars disposed in parallel relation for forming an elongated slot, fastening elements carriedby the beam and received in the said slot to retain the attaching bars in engagement with the beam and permit longitudinal adjustment of the bars on the side of the beam, one of the said bars being shorter than the adjacent bar, whereby the end of the said slot is open to permit attaching and detaching of the said attachingbars on the saidbeam, extension arms formed on the rear ends of the attaching bars, and angularly disposed retaining flanges carried by the extension arm and connected to the said cover board.
