Be it known that we, AUons'rUs S. Wnrrn war and Jossru- SULLIVAN, citizens of the l'nited States, residing at Boise, in. the.
county of Ada and State of ldaho, have -inveuted a neWand uset'ul Integral Curb and Gutter and, Means for Installing Same, of which the following is a ,specitic,ation..
The object of our invention is to provide 10 a novel integral curb and gutter of concrete; to. provide novel and economical means for installing same; and to provide novel means for erecting, adjusting and removing a combined curb and gutter. form. It is further our object'to provide improvementsin the inafter set forth. H h g \Vc attain the'objects of our invention by the mechanism illustrated m the accompanying drawings, in which-- t Figure 1 is a front elevation of our curb and gutter form viewed .irom the gutter side; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through our integral curb and gutter and the com bined curb and gutter form, on line 22 of Fig. 1. the gutter form member being shown in extended position by dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a perspective of curb form member 1; F ig. & is a perspective of gutter form member 2; Fig. 5 is a perspective of expansion joint member3; Fig. 6 is a detail sec tional view on line 6(5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a detail of one of the inner reinforcing plates 14 and countersunk bolts 13; and Fig. 8 is a perspective of an extension gutter form member 4 adapted to be interposed between members 1 anti 2.
Like numerals designate tlniiughout the several views Referring to the accompanying drawings, we provide an angular gutter form member 1, adapted to adjustably engage with an angular guttcr form member 2 by means ot' a suitable bolt 5, inserted through a hori- 45 mntally-extending orificed portion. 16 of member 1 and a horizontally-extending slotted portion 17 of member 2 as shown in Fig. 6, or, when a very wide gutter is required, member 1 ma adjustably engage an angular slotted member 1 by means of bolt. 5, and member 4 in turnengage member 2 by means of a like bolt 5, in similar manner. Suitable planks (5, 7 and 8 are secured to the upwardly converging sides 9 and 10 55 of form 1 and 11 off form 2, respectively, byineans of suitable bolts 12 and 13 having like parts Application m July 22. 1916. their heads countersunk as shownin Fig.2 The. heads of bolts 13 engage in a rein 't'oreing metal plate or strip 14 countersu k in plank T, as illustrated in Fig. 7. On:the{ outer portions of planks 7 .and.8 nearfthe' end of each section we provide outeriineti tl" reinforcing plates 15,.as shown in Fig.1; and 2, bolted to the planks. Member lisi' provided with an outtur ned oi'ifi'ced'foot,l,8 and member-2 is provlded with a sir lar" outturned orificed foot 19. Forms'l and are secured to the ground byb steel stakes} 20, which are each provided with ahandle portion21 bent at an angle Ora-appear; mately lQOdegrees relative to 'th'efbody of' the stake, as illustrated. The'steel" stakes" are one foot seven inches long with a handle" about six inches in length. suit'afble' iex pansion joint members 3' are provided for each section at suitable distances apartin the form, the distanceapart ofjth ese menibers determining the length ofpplanks tor"- torm sections. ,Members 3 are provided, with inch orifices 22 for'liftin'g the ex: pansion joint when the forms are removed. ()n the outer side of plank 7 is fastened a one inch by one inch wood screed 23 for the purpose of forming the shape of upper side of gutter. 24 designates the engineers :5 wooden stakes to indicate position for forms. In erecting the forms, engineers level I stakes 24 aredriven in place, and the planks, which are bolted to the iron-forms are rested directly on the engineers stakes, there-,- by causing the curb and gutter when com.-
pleted to be absolutely level and straight. The adjustable engagement of forms 1 and used for a wide gutter) makes it possible -to readily secure the form in pla'ce at any, u. sual desired width. By reason of the con"- vergent disposition of the sides 9, 10 and 11 of the form members 1 and 2, our forms can be lifted and removed easily and Without injury to the concrete inthe curb and gutter. This construction constitutes a great advantage over other forms, as the top of the curb and gutter is finished before our terms are removed from the concrete s -that the finished lines are perfect, which is not true of other combined for-ms. Our entire form can be removed in one operation and in whole, and it is then immediately ready to replace without rebuilding again. Our forms 1 and 2 are placed a little over three feet apart, three to each section. They are readily secured .a pla by steel stakes 20, and there is no hau'imering or poundlng of the forms after they have been placedon 'the engineers stakes. Consequently thereis no difficulty in keeping the forms in perfect alinement. The stakes 20 are readily withdrawn by means of thehandles 21. The partitions or expansion joint members 3 extend from the grade line up through and to a point one inch above top of curb and gutter. orifices '22 are positioned inthemargin of members 3 tomake possible the convenient removal of these members after the sectional forms have been removed, without injury to the concrete. .Members 3 are preferably of galvanized iron. \Vith .thisform the concrete for both curb and gutter is held and formed until the concrete is set, forming,
an integral curb and utter. \Vhen a block i or street is three hun' red feet long the con- .tractor will require 640 feet of forms and two workmen to handle the output of a concrete mixer of eighty cubic yards capacity,
as against;-elevenworkmen required to'in-- stall the'Same amount of curb and gutter by former methods. Also an important s'aving of time is effected in installing the forms after the engineers level stakes are driven, as two workmen can place in position one thousand feet of these forms in nine hours.
ass? AvAaAeLE coe All that is required of our form to set it is to place a chalk line on t-hefouter edge of the 11'011 frame at each endwhlchgives a perfect alinement longitudinally, and resting the form on the engineers stakes gives the proper alinement for the top of curb and gutter and does away with the leveling of ground required with forms heretofore devised. Form sections can easily be length- I ened or shortened if desired,v and their ad- .justability simplifies the construction work reatly. 4 What we. claim is:
A combined curb and gutter form, com-' prising curb form members having upwardly convergent; orificedflsides, horizontally extendingangular arms secured to the,
forms. gutter form members having the side thereof convergent to permit of ready removal of the form from the concrete, a hornzontally extending angular arm secured to i the gutter form, fastening means fo z securing the aforesaid arms in the desired ad justed relation, and planks"pennanently sei cured to the form members.
