Be it known' that I, JOSEPH M. MERROW, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of I-Iartford, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the same reference being had to the accompany-V ing crawings', forming a part of this speciicatiomand to the characters of reference marked thereon. 'This' invention relates to lubricating means for sewing machines. Certain machines of this class are characterized by looper mechanisms,V of which', as is well known in this art, extremely -high speeds are required. In the operation of such machines, increased efliciency naturally obtains by supplying continuously, adequate lubrication, K directly'to the relatively movable surfaces which are subjected to the greatest amount Vof frictional resistance. By virtue of these driving connections the loopers 7 and 8 may be suitably moved in ka manner well known to those familiar with this art, to coperate with each other and with the needle 6, the latter being driven in any convenient way as from the shaft 15, through the parts indicated in a general way .by 32V.
The peculiar motion imparted to the looper carrier 24 by the correlated vcam grooves 19 and 21 is accommodated preferably by providing a movable support for said carrier. This support may vary as to character, but as shown, it comprises a slide or block 33 mounted forreciprocatory movement on the inner face of the frame cap 9, between guides 34 and 35, the latter guide being' movable to take .up wear and backed up, by an adjusting wedge V36 which bea-rs against the shoulder 37 of said frame cap 9. Y Iii-addition to the bodily movement of looper carrier 24, permitted by the slide 33 provision is also made for an oscillatory movement thereof, involving a pivotal connection comprising, as shown, a trunnion 38, projecting from said carrier 24, intermediate the oppositely disposed arms thereof, and journaled in said block 33. In order to reta-in the carrier 24 in its proper pivotal relation to the supporting block 33 and to provide additional support for said carrier, a guide bar 39 is mounted on the frame cap with va'bearing surface 40, effectively positioned for the purposes stated. Said guide bal' is provided at one end with an offset foot 41 countersunk to receive a screw 42, tapped into the frame cap, while at vits opposite end said bar has a foot block 43 extending between the guides 34and 35,V
which block is bored to receive a screw 44 countersunk in the front or outer faceof the frame cap, and tapped into the bar proper. l
The movement required of the lower looper 8, in this case, is Aan oscillatory one, by reason of which the looper carrier 29 may have a simple pivotal support. Such a support is provided inthe taper stud 45 which is tapped into the frame cap and furnished with a securing nut 46.
The embodiment of the lpresent invention within and applied to the devices hereinabove generally described will now be pointed out and'explained. f
ln the upper part of the frame cap 9, which is somewhat enlarged for the purpose, is provided a lubricant reservoir comprising in the present case a pair of drilled holes 47 l and' 48, plugged at the entering ends thereleading' from bore 49, communicates with a depending plate 51, suitably secured to the frame lcap and provided'with a perforation 52, wh-ich formsV a delivery opening from the duct, through which lubricant can flow to the inclined outer face 53, of said plate 51. From a point below the delivery opening 52, the lower part of plate 51, diverges in two edges 54 and 55, toward two points or hns 56 and 57, so that lubricant issuing from said delivery opening will flow along said edges to both :of said ns.V The lin 56, depends into adjacency to a path traversed by the looper carrier arm 23, which supports stud 26 and roll 28. Due to this arrangement lubricant applied to fin 56 will accumulate at the point thereof drop by drop, and as arm 23 passes, be wiped into notch 5 8 whereit is available for thev soY the plate. Like the lower part of plate 51, that of plate 61 from a point below perfora- Y tion 62, diverges in two edge-s 64 and 65 to form two fins 66 and 67, which respectively depend into adjacency with paths traversed by arm 22 and carrier 29, wherebyin a manner similar to .that in which lubricant is delivered from fin 56 to roll 28, lubricant will also be delivered respectively by finsy 66 and 67 to rolls 27 and 31,.
From the foregoing statements it will be apparent that the finy 56 Yof upper plate 51 delivers lubricant to one cam roll, and thatV fin 57 of said,y upper plate, conveys lubricant which is subsequently divided by the lower plate 61 and delivered .toV two cam rolls. It follows therefore, other factors being equal, that less lubricant should'be conducted'to fin 56thangto fin 57,. Preferably for the purpose of securing the required division yof lubricant between fins 56and 57, delivery opening 52, islocated more on one side than on the other of a plane extending vertically through the point from which the lower part of `depending plate Y51 diverges in the two edges towardV therespective fins.

Said bushing has a sight opening 75, and is countersunk from its inner end to receive the transparent disk 76, washer 77 and'spacing ring 78. The latter is adapted to bear against a second washer 79, at the bottom of the tapped hole thus providing lfor tight joints between the several parts mentioned when the bushing is screwed into place, to
Yprovide means Y whereby an operator can readily see if the reservoir contains suficient lubricant. Ports through which lubricant may be introduced into the reservoir are designated by 80, and these may also serve as air vents to permit the lubricant to flow freely.
Having thus described my invention, what I'claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is,-

In a sewing machine, in combination, a plurality of loopers, a carrier for each looper, means including projections on the looper carriers for actuating the loopers, a support, a guide bar for one of the carriers, secured to the support and lubricant f conveying plates secured'respectively to the support and to the guide bar, the plate secured to the support having depending fins to respectively convey lubricant toward one of the looper carrier projections and toward a duct in the guide bar, and the plate secured to the guide bar' having depending iins to respectively convey lubricant to projections on the looper carriers.
4. In a sewing machine a lubricant conveyer comprising a depending plate having a lower edge thereof interrupted by a notch,
and means for 'causing lubricant to flow upon the plate in a path whose width is Aunequally divided by the apex of the notch.

In a sewingv machine, 1n combination, a frame cap having a reservolr therein for containing lubricant, a pair of loopers mov- Y ably supported by the frame cap, projections associated with the loopers by which the loopers may be actuated, a pair of lubricant conveying plates, each plate having one orV more depending fins to convey lubricant t0 respective projections associated with the loopers, one of the plates having a depending iin to convey lubricant t0v the other plate, and a needle valve for controlling the How of lubricant from the reservoir to` one of the plates.
6. In a sewing machine, a lubricant conveyer comprising a depending plate Vhaving a lower edge thereof interrupted by a notch,
said plate also having for the passage of lubricant an opening so located with respect to the notch that the path followed Vbylub'ricant issuing from the opening will beunequally divided by the apex of the notch.
