TTORNEY CARL TOBIASON, 0F SYCAMORE, ILLINOIS.
HARROW.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application filed January 10, 1917. Serial No. 141,592.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CARL ToBiAsoN, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Sycamore, i n the county of Dekalb, in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iarrows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in harrows. One object of the invention is to effect improvements in the construction of a harrow whereby the same is formed of a plurality of sections, preferably three sections, connected to draft bars which are adjustable to permit a change of position of the harrow sections to lessen the width of the harrow so that the same may be drawn through a gateway of ordinary width. With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangementof parts to be hereinafter fully described in this specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of the specification and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved harrow, the sections being shown in altered position in dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, enlarged.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary end elevation.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view illustrating a roller employed and its locking pin.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 denotes the main draft bar provided with the usual draft rods 2 and to said draft bar 1 auxiliary draft bars 3. 4 are slidably secured by means of the clips 5, 6 and the blocks 7, 8. Each block is secured to the draft bar 1 by bolts 10 and said block comprises an oblong metal frame formed with an opening 11 in one side. The main draft bar 1 and auxiliary draft bars 3, 4 are grooved longitudinally at 12 to receive the roller bearings 13, two in number, said bearings being formed with cavities to receive the ends of screws 14 loosely, said screws being secured to the said blocks 7, 8 and serving to secure the bearings in fixed relation to said blocks and permit relative movement of the auxiliary draft bars.
In one end of each block 7, 8 screws 15 are arranged that carry the relatively movable bearings 16 in which ball bearings 17 are arranged that bear upon the draft bar 1. Springs 18 encircling the bolts 15 bear against the bearings 16 and space the same from the end of the oblong frame of the blocks 7 8. The clips 5, 6 aforesaid are adapted to carry the draft chains 19 of the harrows 20. In operation the three harrows are carried abreast with the auxiliary draft bars spaced away from each other as shown, full lines, in Fig. 1. To lessen the width of the harrow the central harrow section is disconnected from the clips 5, 6 and the auxiliary draft bars moved toward each other until the end harrow sections abut. The chains 19 of the former center harrow section, which is now positioned in the rear of the two outer harrow sections, are secured to hooks 21 of the other two harrow sections as shown in Fig. 1 dotted lines. The ball bearings carried by the blocks 7 8 render the relative movement of the auxiliary draft bars easy.
What is claimed is 1. In a harrow comprising a central section and two end sections, a grooved main draft bar, releasable connection between said draft bar and said central section, oblong blocks secured to said main draft bar, grooved auxiliary draft bars adapted for sliding engagement with said blocks and main draft bar, roller bearings, formed with cavities, separating said main draft bar and auxiliary draft bars and disposed in the grooved portions of said members within said oblong blocks, screws carried by said blocks and loosely disposed in the cavities of said roller bearings for retaining them in fixed relation and connection between said auxiliary draft bars and said end sections.
2. In a harrow comprising a central section and two end sections, a grooved main draft bar, releasable connection between said draft bar and said central section, oblong blocks secured to said main draft bar, grooved auxiliary draft bars adapted for sliding engagement with vSaid blocks and main draft bar, roller bearings separating In testimony that I claim the foregoing n said main draft bar and auxiliary draft bars as my oWn I have hereto aiixed my signature 10 and disposed in the grooved portions of said in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
members Within said oblong blocks, means w v 5 carried by said blocks engaging said roller @ARL bearings for retaining them in xed rela- -Witnessesz tion and connection between said auxiliary L.v ERICKSON, draft bars and said end sections. C. W. ANDERSON.
