Be it known that I, Jnssn RosnNrELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instep Strap Attaching Means for Leggings and the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to novel means for attaching the end of an instep strap which is used on leggings, gaiters, etc., and is intended primarily to take the place of the usual buckle which has heretofore been employed in this capacity.

The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby the instep strap of leggings, gaiters and the like, may be secured to the opposite side of the device in a convenient manner. As practised, these straps are employed to hold the legging or gaiter down over the foot of the wearer,

and it has been heretofore necessary to utilize a buckle as the attaching means; not only is the buckle unsightly when used on gaiters, but it also has other disadvantages, which the present invention proposes to overcome.

Further features of the invention will be more fully understood upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of one form of legging, illustrating the application of the present invention;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed view of a legging, showing the instep strap and the application of the present invention;

Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. l;

Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 1;

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the preferred form of attaching means;

Fig. 6 is a perspective View of a modified form of attaching means, illustrating the same as applied to the instep strap; and

Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the form illustrated in Fig. 6.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 represents a legging, which may be of any desirable construction, and having the usual side lacing device. 2 represents the instep strap which passes under the foot of the wearer, and is employed to hold the legging down. As heretofore practised, the loose end of the instep strap is secured to the side of the legging by a buckle. According to the present invention, this buckle is done prises a body 5, having offset integral wings 6, with slotted openings 7 provided therein.

Projecting from the body portion 5 is a tongue 8. This tongue 8, as well as the wings 6, are not in the same plane as the body portion 5, the reasons for which will be hereinafter described. The end of the strap 2 being provided with openings 9, the attaching means 3 will engage the strap by the offset body portion 5, the tongue 8 is adapted to be received by one of the openings 9 in the end of the strap, and in this manner securely hold the attaching means to the strap. Located on the bottom of the legging side are a pair of rivets 10, which are spaced apart a suitable distance to accommodate the end of the strap and in a manner to enable the slotted openings 7 of the wings 6 to be engaged thereby. The rivets 10 are of a height of substantially that of the thickness of the wings, in order that the strap will be clamped tightly to the legging side. By means of the tongue 8 engaging one of the openings 9, the strap will of course be prevented from slipping from under the body portion 5. This tongue 8 engaging one of the openings 9 also enables the strap to be adjusted to different positions, in order that it may accommodate the foot of the wearer.

Figs. 6 and 7 represent a modified form, which form is substantially that of the preferred form, the only difference being that it is constructed of wire, preferably spring wire, and in place of the tongue 8 the ends of the wire are brought together, in order to provide a projection such as 11. This is employed for engaging one of the openings 9, and as an additional safeguard, a second projection 12 is used on the opposite side of the device, and engages a second opening 9 in the end of the strap, the rivet engaging means 13 in this form being substantially the same as that of the slotted openings 7 in the wings 6.

It will be readily appreciated that the use of this device will provide a neat and convenient manner of attaching the instep strap to the side of the legging. The preferred form of attaching means, illustrated in Fig.

5, may be stamped in any numbers from a sheet of any light metal, and the modified form of attaching means may be constructed either by hand or by machine. When the latter is employed, they may be, of course, turned out in large numbers, at a comparatively cheap cost.

I claim:

1. An instep strap attaching device for leggings, comprising a grip having strap engaging means and stud engaging means, said strap engaging means comprising a tongue integral with the grip, adapted to be received in. an opening in the strap.

2. An instep strap attaching device for leggings, comprising a grip having strap en- 15 gaging means and stud engaging means, said strap engaging means comprising a tongue integral With the grip, adapted to be received in an opening in the strap, and said stud engaging means comprising slotted openings on opposite sides of said strap engaging means.
