ARON B. PINNEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR ELECTRICALLY CONTROLLING MECHANICAL OPERATION.
Application filed July 20, 1917.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ARON B. PINNEY, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Electrically Controlling Mechanical Operation; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper tains to make and use the same.
My invention has particular reference to the operation of quick closing valves for automatic engine stops.
In Figure 1 I have shown my improvement attached to a valve. Fig. 2 is a perspective, and Fig. 3 a section.
The valve 1 is or may be of the kind well known commercially for preventing racing or over speeding of stationary engines. As shown it is equipped with a lever 2 formed with hooks 3 adapted to normally engage and hold a weighted valve stem 4. When the lever is raised by the plunger 5 and turns on its fulcrum G the hooks disengage the stem 4 and permit the stem to gravitate to quickly close the valve. A. weighted lever 6 is keyed to the shaft 6 on which lever 2 is fulcrumed. This aids the action of the plunger in swinging lever 2 to free the stem 4.
As improved means for actuating the lever 2 I show the following parts: The plunger 5 is movable in a casing 7 A spring 8 is coiled about the plunger and bears against a pin 9 extending through the outer end of the plunger and against a shoulder 10 in the casing 7. A link 12 connects the plun ger with a bell crank lever 18, one of its fulcrum points being designated at 13 and the other at 13. The link is formed, with a recess 14; to receive the shaft 15 on which the bell. crank is mounted when the parts are in the dotted line position of Fig. 3. This shaft is held in the casing 7. A bar 16 on the free arm of the bell crank constitutes an armature to be attracted and held by electro-magnets 17 mounted on the eas- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. it), 1918.
Serial No. 181,824,
ing. In this position it will be noted that the fulcrum points 15 and 13 and the shaft 15 are substantially in alinement but not eX- actly so, that is, they are close to the center and sutliciently near it to permit the magnet attraction to hold the armature and to maintain the spring retracted. By means of a suitable switch 18 the current normally energizing the electromagnets may be cut off thus permitting the spring pressure to instantly project the plunger and operate the lever 2 to release the valve stem.
When it is desired to again place the plunger in its retracted position the armature is turned by hand into engagement with the magnets.
From the foregoing it will be seen that mechanical power is secured and stored by the compression of the spring and that very slight magnetic power in the magnet is necessary to hold the spring retracted while the opening of the circuit energizing the magnets causes the instant release of the plunger. It will also be understood that this electric controlling means is available for 'arious uses and is not necessarily limited to the operation of a valve.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the character described, a plunger, means tending to extend said plunger, a. bell crank lever. an armature on said lever, a link connecting said plunger with said lever and an electromagnet adapt: ed to attract said armature and hold said. plunger retracted.
2. In a device of the character described, a plunger, means tending to extend said plunger. a shaft in line with said plunger, :1 bell crank lever mounted on said shaft, an armature on said lever. a. link connecting said plunger with said lever and formed with av recess to receive said shaft when said plunger is retracted, and an electro-magnot tending to hold said armature and maintain said plunger retracted.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
ARON B. PINNEY.
