To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE J. PETERSON, a citizen-of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Bear Lake and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby rapid-fire guns may be fired without the use of explosives or introducing gases into the barrel or bore of the gun.
The invention also seeks to provide simple means whereby the gun may be aimed in any desired direction, and also to provide operating mechanism which will be simple in construction and operation and prove eflicient and inexpensive in use.
The several stated objects are attained in mechanism such as is illustrated in the ac companying drawings, and the invention resides in certain novel features which will be hereinafter fully described and then more particularly pointed out in the'claims.
In the annexed drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of a machine-gun embodying my improvements.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of a pair of guns and the mounting for the same.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a gun embodying my invention and showing the same aimed in a downward direction with the parts in the position assumed after discharge.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the gun aimed upwardly and the parts in the posi tion assumed immediately prior to a discharge.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the gun mount.
In carrying out my invention, I mount the gun upon an automobile indicated at 1, which may be of any well known type as regards its driving mechanism and the forward portion of the frame. The usual body, however, is omitted and, upon the rear por tion of the frame, a base or pedestal 2 is rigidly secured. Upon this pedestal is hingediy mounted a base or platform 3 so that it may be iiited verticaily and a gun, mounted thereon, thereby aimed. upwardly or downwardly. the hinge conne tion between the platform and edestal is immaterial and is shown con- The 'iarticubir form of adapted to bear upon the platform in such manner as to hold it in any position in which it may be set. The platform is preferably circular and has an upturned rim 5 at its edge which rim is adapted to overlap the edge of a turn table 6 which is carried by W the platform and is supported thereon through the medium of anti-friction devices shown at 7. The turn table 6 is constructed with teeth 12 on its edge which mesh with a pinion 13 secured upon the lower portion of an adjusting shaft 14 which is rotatably mounted in the platform 3 and in the upper end of a post or column 15 erected on the platform and inclosing the shaft as clear shown. An operating hand wheel 16 i secured upon the upper extremity of the shaft and below said extreniity'a spur wheel 17 is secured upon the shaft. This spur wheel may be engaged by a dog 18 carried by an arm or bracket 19 projecting from the base 15 so that the shaft may be held against rotation and the turn table, consequently. held in any position to which it may be brought.
Upon the turn table, I secure standards 20 which are disposed at opposite sides of the central longiiudinal plane of the machine and somcwlmt in advance. of the center of the turn table. as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The standards are rigidly secured to the turn table and. of course, follow all the movements of the same. Upon the upper end of each standard, I secure a carriage or base 21 on which a gun barrel 22 is mounted, the barrel being preferably pivoted to the carriage 21 so that it may more in a 'crtical plane relative to the mount and greater accuracy of aim be there by attained. The gun barrel is constructed with a bore 23 of a proper diameter to accommodate bullets or other projectiles to be discharged therefrom and upon the upper side of each gun barrel, I secure a hopper 2-1- which is intended to be filled with the pro ectiles prior to the operation of the gun.
