2 SHEETS-suur l..
A rronufrs WILLIAM .roizrrsoir.annimmt4 or am annemarie novnm'r.
To all whom tmc concern.'
' PAYNE,
Be it known t at I, WILLIAM Jonsson a citizen of the United States,` and a resident of Panther Burnin the county- 0f Sharkey and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Mechanical Y Movement, of which the following is a full,
clear, andV exact description.
My invention relates to mechanical' movements particularly 'adaptable for obtaining a `reciprocating motion. An object of the inventionis to obtain a simpleand inexpen ed eccentrically sive movement which is particularly adapted to jacks.
lliththe the nature of which will more fully appear as the' description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combinar'4 tion and,V arrangement of parts as herein lfully described, illustrated and -clainiedl- In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all.' y

chanical movement;

'which is housed and guided by the casing 6.
:When the post 5 is used for jacking purposes the casing 6 is constructed accordingly anda lhead 7 isprovidedon the post 5. A through al slot l9 inthe lcasing 6. A gear 10-is mountoii said stud 8. It meshes with an idler 11 which is also in mesh with a Vgear 12 similar 'to gear 1Q and mounted ec 'c'entricallyon a shaft 13 and constrained to revolve therewith. on a s t'udgm to4 a link 15, the ends of which-are pivotally connected to thecenters of tha-gears i0. and i2. f Asthe shaft* 13 is rev lve'd, `the gear 12'is revolved therewithr from the position shown in dottedline in Fi 3. 'Inconse uence the idler 11 is .revolv and I moved ongitudi-` nally, causin the revolutionof the 'geai'lO from the position shown. idotted line, and
also a longitudinaldisplacement offsslne.
The two movements control the displace ment of the stud 8- in-jthe slot 9' and 4tlvaia's where the post 5. isther ofza' pu lite. motive power can beapplicd direct] shaft 13 Witl'io'ut-fany other transitl zs'vg but in cases where the post 5 ce1-tief, -eg'r 707 taining maximum capacity. `he tranmisbe use in connection with-.a pump, if sci-desired, and itis formed of a; series of gears',VA of lwhich -gear ,16 visc'oxrl 7i strainedfto revolve with' the-shaft 13;` The gear- 1 8 is Vconstrained 'to rotate. The'gears 17 andl18 are mounted-[to revolve on a 'stud 19 carried by a hand wheel 20 which is, in
a hand wheel,- a pulley or other similar' element may be substituted. The gear 18 is in 85 mesh with a gear 21 concentricwith the gear 16 and secured tothe casing 6. In revolvingj -the -liand Wheel 2O the gears ,17 andl18 car# .ried thereby are can'sedto revolve on: their stud 19 dueto the engagement of the gears 90 The rotation of the. gear 17 o'n its stud causes the revolution o f the vshaft" gear 16 which he displacementV of the. shaft 13 causes the displacement of the gear 12, in consequence of which `a longitudinal displacement is imparted to4 the post 5. y 4The mechanical inovementV ,mayl be, provided without the idler 11 therebetween, but V'10o the advantage' ofthe idler. is that it makes the movement self-locking for any position,`
for the resultant of .the forces actiiigi4 be-` tween the two' eccentric gears or cams and the intermediate idler is vertical and passes 1015'H through the center of the operating shaft.
In' the modified structure shown in l? ig. l the stud 14 on which the pinion 11 bears extends through a slot 9 `provided in the housing 6 of the jack. This stud 14C is se cured to lazy tongs 24 disposed withinthe housing below the post 5 and to which the lupper end of the tongs is connected by meansof a stud 8', also bearing in the slots v9', the lower end of the tongs being secured 'which it is connected, therebythe weight supported by the post is not only supported by the stud 8 but also by the pin 14 and shaft 13 to which the tongs are connected.
In Fig. 5 a modified form of transmission is 's liown, in which the pin 19 is carried by a gear 22 which is revoluble'on the sha-ft 13. The casing 6' has an additional stud shaft23 onv which the hand wheel '20"is mounted and which carries a pinion 2l constrained to revolve therewith and in mesh with the gear 22. This arrangement permits 'a larger capacity of the jack.
In the modification disclosed in Figs. 6
and 7 .the casing 26 'is separate from the base 27. The eccent'rigr, gears and the transmission are mountedon al casing 26. The -lower end of the lazy tongs 24 1s anchored to an extension of the base which enters the-` housing'. The upper end of the lazy tongs is connected to the post through tbe medium f the stud 8, and the central part of ,the l zy tongs is anchored to the `shaft 13, the tud 114: being connected to the lazy tongs. The operation of the jack displa-ces the stud 8 which entrains the lazy tongs; and since there are also tongs at both-sides of its anchoring point, not only the post4 will move out of the casing 26 but also the 'casing will move oli' the base 27. Y
I claim:
