To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY (I. ILETT, a citizen of the United States, residingat La Grange, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices,.of which the following is a specification.V
Myv invention relates to fastening devices and has especial references to devices of this character for securely holding together the members of bed frame structures,such as the side rails and the head and foot panels.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a fastening device especiallyadapted for securing the side rails ofbed frame structures, at their respective ends, tothe head and foot panels thereof, which will not only support the members in place but which will tightly and firmly draw the members together so that there can be 'nofrelative movement of the parts, and which is adjustable to compensate for any shrinkage of the wooden parts of the frame structure.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a fastening device for the members of bed frames which draws the members so firmly and closely together as to not lea-ve' any openings within which to harbor insects.
Another obj ect of my invention is to provide aI fastening device that is cheap to construct, easy of application and simple in operation.
Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bed rail and the postof an end panel showing some of the parts in section and showing my fastening device attached thereto.

fronting surfaces of the post 5. On the post 5 is mounted, as at 8, aslotted plate 9, which overlies a mortise and is secured to the post, as by screws 10. The plate 9 is centrally perforated, with a key hole slot 11, having an enlarged intermediate portion 12 and relatively narrow portions 13 and 14, which are in the same vertical plane. The slidable bolt 15 passes neatly through the perforated plate 16, which is secured to the outer surface ofthe block 7, as by screws 17. The outer end of the Vbolt 15 slotted to receive a cam 1S. The legs, of which there are two, one on eachside of the slot o-f the bolt 15, are turned into eyes 19 and 20, the cam 1S. being pivoted to the bolt 15, by a pin 21 which passes through the eyes 19 and 20 and permits free pivotal movementof the cam. The cam has a rounded eccentric portion 22, and a fiat retaining portion 23, the
latt-er to bear against the plate 16 when the parts are in locked position. The front end of the .bolt l5 is reduced to provide a stern'23, which is threaded to receive an adj ustable nut 24. A nut, or enlargement 24 is `sufficiently small to pass through the enilar ged portion 12 of the slot 11 but will not pass through the narrower portion 14 of the slot. Projecting from the ends of the side rails 6 are dowel pins 25, one preferably above the fastening device and the other below it. These dowel pins are, preferably, fixed in the side rail and project sufliciently into the post 5.
To assemble the parts, the cam 18 is rotated outwardly upon its pivot 21, to a position substantially as shown in dotted lines in F ig. 2, after which the bolt 15 is pushed forwardly to project as far beyond* the end Of the side rail 6 as may be. Then the side rail is placed so that the nut 24 will enter the enlarged portion 12 of the slot 11. This may be done before the dowel pins 25 in the side rails will enter the respective openings in the post 5. Then the side rails and the post may be pushed together whereby the bolt 15 will be moved axially into approximately the position shown in Fig. 2. Thereupon the cam 18 should be forcibly moved into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, whereupon the nut 24 is drawn, by action of the cam, firmly against the plate 9. The cam when moved upon its pivot, first engages the abutment 16 by its curved surface 22, and further movement of the cam, as driving it in by a hammer or the like, will move lso the bifurcated end of the bolt 15 tending to drawy it out of the block 7, thereby causing the nut 24, in its engagement with the plate 9, to draw the side rail 6 and the-block 7 firmly into contact with the post 5. When the flat surface 23 ofthe cam is moved into Contact with the confronting surface of the plate 16 the cam will thus be caused to 'remain in its nal position until i'orced out of it vby some especially applied means for the purpose. A hole 26 may be drilled into the surface of, or through the caro, within which to insert an instrument to turn it upon yits pivot and move it from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 tothe position shown in dotted lines, prior to'disassembling fthe parts. Or an instrument may be pushed between the cam and the confronting inner surface of the bed rail to push the cam out of its looked position. The nut 241may Vbe adjusted on' the threaded stem 28 ofthe bolt 15 to compensate for any shrinkage of the contacting wooden parts of the structure.
The device is very easily and quickly assembled. After the plates 9 and 16 have been properly placed in their respective vpositions'and secured thereto by the respective screws', the -bolt or bar 15 is passed through -A Y the plate 16 and the block 7, Vafter which the nut21is Screwed Von the threaded stem 23 ofV .-the bolt .15.. The; parts are then ready for `fastening 'the bed structure members together, which is accomplished inthe manner heretofore described.
