Description

est
THOMAS E.' CROUCH, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB, T0 THE YALE & TOWNE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT.
LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, '1918.
Application :tiled June "l, 1918. Serial No. 238,700,
To all LU/wm 'it may concern Be it known that I. THOMAS E. CRoUcn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in locks, and is an improven'ient on the construction shown in Patent No. 685,289 granted to F. 1V. Mix, October 29th, 1901.
It has been found in practice that many of the lever tumbler and some of the pin tumbler locks may be opened by striking the lock on some particular point, which jars the mechanism out of locking condition with the bolt work and permits the shackle 4to open. The object of my invention is to provide improved means for preventing the lock from being so opened, and it consists in the parts and combination of par-ts as will be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Inl the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the lock, the casing being in section; Fig. 2 is a similar view in section through the key actuated mechanism; Fig. 3 is a view in transverse vertical section; Fig. -tis a view in horizontal section; Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the two bolts; Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the casting showing the guides for the sliding bolts; Fig. 7 is a view in perspective of the key plug and spring supported bolt actuating plate and Fig. 8 is a view in perspective of the underside of the bolts showing the groove and lugs.
9 represents a casing open at its lower end and in which a casting 10 is secured by rivets as shown. The casting 10 is cut away at one side in alinement with a hole in the top of the casing to receive the heel or long end of a shackle 11 and is bored centrally to receive a key plug 12 which latter is retained in the casting by a screw 13 secured to the plug with its head in a slot in the casting, which screw operates to prevent the withdrawal of the plug and also limits its rotary movement to the length of the slot in which the head of the screw rests.
The shackle is forced outwardly by a spring and is retained in place against displacement when open by the means disclosed in the patent above referred to and which have illustrated, or by any other suitable means.
The shackle is provided at its free or front end and also in its heel with oppositely disposed notches 11a and 11lo in which the ends of sliding bolts 14 and 15, mounted in grooves 16 in the casting 12, normally rest for locking the hasp in its closed position. These bolts 14 and 15 are approximately L- shaped in plan, the long arms or members overlapping, or disposed side by side and parallel, and provided at the free ends of their long arms, with recessed seats to receive the springs 17 which enter similar recesses in the adjacent face of the short member of the companion bolt, and operate to yieldingly hold the two bolts projected and in contact with the notches 11L and 11b in the two members of the hasp.
Each bolt is provided on its lower face at the free end of its long arm with a lug 18 and with a groove 19 in the arm at the rear of the said lug, in which the yieldingly supported bolt actuating plate 20 normally rests for holding the bolts in their projected positions. The inner corners of the rear or inner walls of the groove 19 are beveled as at 21, so that when the bolt actuating plate 20 is turned as will hereinafter be described, the latter' will ride, or be forced down the inclines until it is clear of the grooves 19, and then by its contact with the lugs 18 on the oppositely disposed bolts, force the lugs apart, against the action of the springs 17 and thus withdraw the bolts 14 and 15 from the notches 11a and 11b in the shackle.
The bolt actuating plate 20 is mounted in a slot 22 in the upper end of the key plug 12, and-is held projected above the upper end of the latter by the springs 23, and normally rests in the grooves 19, and between the lugs 18, so that as the key plug starts to turn, the locking plate, will by its Contact with the corners 21 of the walls of the groove 19 be forced down against the action of the springs to clear the groove 19 and then by its contact with the lugs 18 withdraw or retract the bolts, thus leaving the shackle free to be withdrawn. As soon as turning pressure on the key is removed, the springs 17 force the bolts to their locking position.
The pin tumbler lock may be of any ap be turned with the latter.
proved construction and operates in the well known manner.
In the Mix Patent (585,289 above referred to, the part corresponding to the bolt actuating plate 20 of my lock is integral with the key plug'- and rests between lugs on the bolts and not within grooves in the bolt, and it has been found that by striking the lock, the spring bolts can be jarred and moved sufiiciently to release the shackle. l With my improvement the locking plate rests in a groove in the bolts and must be depressed before the bolt can be retracted, and it would be difficult if not impossible to cause an unlocking movement of the locking plate 20 simultaneously with a retracting movement of the bolts, by concussion or hammering the lock.
When the proper key is inserted and the key plug 12 turned, the locking plate will As it begins to turn, or as turning pressure is applied to the same, it engages the beveled corners at the walls 0f the grooves 19 and is depressed until it clears them, after which its engage ment with the lugs 18 retracts the bolts and releases the shackle. y
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from'the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to conne myself to the eXact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
l. yIn a lock, the combination of a shackle,
a casing, a sliding'bolt to engage the leg of the shackle for locking it, key actuated mechanism, a device actuated by the'key actuated mechanism for moving the bolt to unlocking position and a yielding scat for said device.
2. In a lock, the combination of a shackle, a casing, a spring pressed sliding bolt to engage a leg of the shackle for locking it7 the said bolt being provided with a groove anda lug, key'actuated mechanism, anda yieldingly supported plate carried by said key actuated mechanism and normally resting in the groove in the bolt.
3. In a lock, the combination of a shackle, a casing, oppositely moving spring pressed bolts to engage the two legs of the shackle for locking it, key actuated mechanism, a device carried by said key actuated meclianism for moving both bolts to unlocking position and a yielding seat for said device.
4. In a lock, the combination of a shackle, a casing, oppositely moving' spring pressed bolts carried by the casing and adapted to engage the legs of the shackle, each bolt having a groove and a lug, keyV actuated mechanism andV a spring seated bolt actuating plate carried by said key actuated mechanism and normally resting in the said grooves and between the lugs on the bolts.
'In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOMAS E. CROUCH.
