To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LEONARD GERHARDT, a citizen of the United States, residing iat Arlington, in the county of Baltimoreand State of Maryland, Vhave invented new and useful Improvements in Sifter-Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sifter containers and has particular application to the construction of the top `or cover through which the vpulverized or powdered material is adapted to be sifted or shaken.
AsV it is well known, containers of this general type are employed for holding or dispensing pulverized materials such as talcum or toilet powders and the like, `and are usually made of tin or other metal. In some instances it is the practice to make the top or cover of the can with an elevated neck having a perforated Atop wall which is surmounted with a shiftable, perforated cap plateffor permittingthe escape of the contents according as the perforations of the v Acap plate are moved into and out of register with the perforations of the top wall. Such a type of can is relatively expensive to make, however, requiring 'as it does certain special tools and a number of distinct manufacturing operations', in addition to requiring a relatively large amount of metal. On the 4other hand, cans which are devoid yof this elevated neck structure are usually complicated and cumbersome in construction, andare ditlicult to manipulate in opening and closing, and in addition,

Furthermore, the, cans of both the above mentioned types with which I am acquainted present" another serious disadvantage, and that is that owing to the irregular shapes and forms of the tops or covers and the parts thereof, such as springs, projections, ledges i and the like, it is a diiicult matter to economically pack and store these cans in boxes or cartons for shipment, but on the contrary considerable space is usually wasted.
Inthe present instance I have devised a type of container having a sifter top which fis deyoid of the above mentioned objections donot rev tain ,the contents properly sealed when the Y container is closed, but having open seams, Y cracks vand-the like, will usually allow the incident to both the neck and neckless type of c ans, for in-iny construction is not only a minimum amount of metal employed, but the number of operations required, toV make the top are few in comparison with the manufacture of the ordinary sifter container,
and furthermore, owingto the construction and location of the parts or cover of my container a number of the latter may be compactly, economically'and closely packed in a carton or other receptacle, for storage and shipping purposes. v
Another object of my :invention is the provision of a sifter top for containers which is so constructed that Vwhen closed the I contents will be positively and securely sealed against accidental sifting or escaping, as there are no cracks or open joints through which the material can flow.
It is also my purpose to provide an article of this class wherein the can may be-conveniently and easily manipulated and opened and closed, the use of but one hand being required for this purpose.
I also aim topi-Ovide a container which will embody the desired features of simplicity, efficiency and neatness, and which f. may be manufactured and marketed at` a relatively low cost.
With the above lrecited objectsl and othersv of a similar nature in view my,v invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the present instance I have shown my invention as embodied in the form of atalcum 1owder can which is approximately elliptical, or oval in cross section, but it will of course be understood that such invention is not limited in its useful application to this particular style of container. ,'-;Referrng' now 'to the accompanying edge 4 of the top Wall.
