To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in valves and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with hose and it is an object of the invention to provide a valve of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the valve member is moved into open position when the hose or the like is coupled thereto and wherein the hose or the like maintains the valve in open position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved valve of this general haracter which automatically closes and wherein means are employed for constantly urging the valve member toward its seat.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved valve whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use,as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a valve constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, with the valve member in op n position;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings P denotes a pipe section adapted to be suitably connected with a line leading from a source of fluid under pressure. The outer end portion of the pipe section P is flared to afford a bell 1. The outer end of the bell 1 is defined by the outstanding and internally threaded flange 2 with which is adapted to be engaged the bell 8 of a second pipe section S. I
Snugly fitting in the pipe section S and capable of sliding movement longitudinally thereof is a valve member M tubular in form with its inner end. 4 closed and its opposite or outer end open. The member M is of a length in excess of the pipe section S and the closed end 4 is defined by the outstanding annular. flange 5 substantially semi-circular incross section and which contacts with the inner portion of the bell 3 whereby the outward movement of the member M is limited.
Arranged within the pipe section P inwardly of but in close proximity to the hell 1 thereof is a spider 6 and interposed between the spider 6 and the closed end 4: of the valve member M is an expansible member 7, herein disclosed as a conventional type of coil spring which serves to constantly urge the member M toward the limit ber is limited by the ring 9 threaded upon the outer end portion of the valve member M and adapted to contact with the outer end of the pipe section S.
H denotes a hose of any ordinary or preferred type and which has in swivel onnection therewith the coupling 10 adapted to be threaded upon the outer or forward end portion of the pipe section S. When the coupling 10 is applied to the section S the valve member M of necessity must be forced inwardly thereupon the openings 8 are moved into open position. It will be self-evident that upon removing the coupling 10 from the pipe section S the valve M will automatically move outwardly and thereby close the openings 8 so that the discharge of fluid through the section 8 is prevented.
It is also to be understood that the ring 9 serves to facilitate a fluid tight connection of the coupling 10 with the pipe section S as said ring 9 together with the outer end of the valve member M contacts with the basket 11 arranged in a well known manner within within the bell 3 of the'section S whereby the outward movement of the member M is limited and said member is held against pressure imposed thereupon by the force of the fluid when the hose H is disconnected from the section S. For this reason it is preferred that the inner face of the bell 3 and the periphery of the flange 5 be ground in order to facilitate their co,-action.
From the foregoing description, it is thought tobe obvious that a valve constructed in a ccorda n ce with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of'the convenience and facility with whieh it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to, the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying outmy invention in practice except ashereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. A devicev of the character. described comprising a tubular member adapted for communication with a source of fluid under pressure, the intermediate portion of said member being enlarged, tubular valve member slidably engaged within the dis ehargeend of the tubular member, the inner end ofsaidtubular member being closed,
said valve member inwardly of the closed endand in close proximity thereto being provided with an opening, said tubular valve member-being of a length to extend beyond the discharge end of the tubular:

opening therein in communication with the enlarged'portion of the tubular member,

A device of the character described comprising a tubular member adapted for communication with a source of fluid under pressure, the intermediate portionof said member being enlarged, a tubular valve member slidably engaged within the discharge end of the tubular member, the inner end of said tubular member being. closed, said valve member inwardly of the closed end and, in close. proximity thereto being said tubular valve member being of a length to extend beyond the discharge. end of the tubular member when at the limit of its movement in. an outward direction, andva member carried by and surrounding the vouter end portion ot the valve member and contacting with the, outer end of the tubular member for limiting the inward movement of the valve member, said valve member when at the limit of its inward movement having the opening therein in communication with the enlarged portion of the tubularmember, said; tubular member comprising. two separable sections having their connected end portions of bell formation to afiord the enlarged portion of the tubular. member.
