SMOKE FLUE AND CHIMNE; umm.,
APPLlCATlON HLED SEPT. l5, |91?.
JAMES C. D. WEEKS, OF CHEAPSIDE, VIRGINIA.
SMOKE-FLUE AND CH'IMNEY LINING.
Speciication of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 10, 1918.
Application med september 15, 1917. serial No. 191,584.
To all whom it 'may concern.' l
Be it known that'I, JAMES C. D. WEEKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chea'side, in the county of Northampton and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Flues and Chimney Linings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to masonry smoke Ilues and chimneys, and its object is to provide the same with a novel and improved shield to guard against fires from flames or sparks finding their way through cracks or crevices opening through the chimney or flue from the interior thereof to the outside and exposing the surrounding partitions or other building elements to the flames, sparks or intense heat escaping through such cracks or crevices from the interior of the flue.
The invention also has for its object to provide a shield of the kind stated which is of simple construction, and can be readily put up, and which is securely held in place.
The objects stated are attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a partof this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section,l
showing the application of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a fragment of the lining, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing the base member of the lining.
Referring specifically to the drawing 5 denotes a masonry chimney or flue having a central flame and smoke passage 6, with side openings 7 leading therefrom to receive the pipes or iues from the various stoves in the different rooms on the several floors ofthe building. The oors of the building are shown at 8, and the roof at 9.
In the passage 6 is mounted a shield or lining of metal to prevent the escape of iames or sparks through cracks or other defects in the brickwork. This lining is made up of a plurality of rectangular casings 10 open at the top and bottom and assembled in superposed relation, one on the top of the other so as to form a continuous flue extending from the bottom to the top of the passage and lining the same. Certain ones of these casings are provided on one side with vlaterally projecting thimbles 11 extending into the side openings 7 for attachment of the stove pipes or flues.
On opposite sides of each casing l() are fastened guide straps 12 for retaining members, whereby the casings are centered and held in place in the passage 6. Each of these members comprises a bar 13 having a lateral bend 14 at one end. The bar 13 forms the shank of the retaining member and seats beneath 'the guide 12, whereas the bend 14 extends into the wall of the flue 5 and is bricked up. The bar 13 depends from the bottom of the casing 10 a suliicient distance to lap the next casing below, and the several casings are therefore securely held in aline- Inent. As the retaining members are adjustable lengthwise in the guides l2, they can be set to bring the bends 14 into any mortar joint at the side of the casing.
The bottom casing 10 has outstanding base ianges l5 which are bricked up in the same manner as the retaining members hereinbefore described. I
The shield affords complete protection against fires from a defective iiue, and it can be readily applied when the flue is being built.
I claim The combination with a chimney or flue; of a lining therefor composed of a series of casings assembled in the iue in superposed relation, and retaining members for the casings composed of angular bars consisting each of a shank and a laterally outwardly extending part, said members being mounted on the sides of the casings and the shanks thereof depending therefrom across the joint between the same and the next casing, and the outwardly extending parts of the members being embedded in the wall of the flue, and guides mount-ed on the outer faces of the casings in which the shanks of the retaining members are longitudinally adjustable.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JAMES C. D. WEEKS.
