To all whom itmay-concernx Be it known that I; LAWRENCE C. NVALsH, a citizen of the UnitedStatcs of America, residing at Putnam, in the county of indham and State-of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in sewing M-achines, of which the following is a specification, referencebeing had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a device for use in connection with sewing machines and has for its object the production of a simple and eflici'ent sewingmachine whereby the usual rocking motion of such sewing machin'esis entirely 1 eliminated.
Another object of this invention is theproduction of a simple and efficient mechanism for producing a loop or stitch whereby the pieces of cloth which are sewed together may be easily held together and when necessary the stitches may be easily pulled out.
Wit-h these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

By referring to the drawings it will be seen that 1 designates the frame of the stitching machine which frame is mounted upon a suitable support as may be desired, the basis 2 of the frame 1 resting upon this suitable support. A main operating shaft 3 is carried by the frame 1 and this main operating shaft 3 carries a driving wheel 4 which driving wheel may be driven by means of a belt or other suitable driving means. The frame 1 is provided with a plurality of projecting fingers 5 through which projecting fingers 5 works an operating needle rod 6. This needle rod 6 Carries a needle 7 at its lower end as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. Anoperatingshoe 8 is carried by this needle rod 6 and is secured thereto by means of a set screw 9. Theshoe 8 comprises ail-elongated bodyportion having a longitudinally extending. slot 11 formed therein in which longitudinally extending slot 11 works a pin 12 carried bythe eccentric head 13. -This eccentric head13 is carried by thegshaft 3 as shown in Fig. 1. It will beseen by considering Fig 1 that the needle rod 6 maybe reciprocated within the fingers 5 needle 7.- v i Asuitable throat-plate 14 is secured to the frame 1 and is provided with a suitable aperture 15 formed therein through which aperture 15, the needle 7 works.
A hook carrying shaft 16 is mounted upon the frame 1 below the shaft 3 and this shaft 16 carries a hook 17 at its outer end which hook 17 is held in a set position upon the shaft 16 by means of the set screw 18. The shaft 16 carries a loop 19 which loop passes through the elongated slotted end 20 of the rocker arm 21. This rocker arm 21 is pivotally mounted upon the pivot pin 22 and as the rocker arm 21 is swung, the shaft 16 will be oscillated. The arm 21 is provided with a projecting finger 23 which projecting finger 23 engages, and is swung by the cam 2% carried by the main operating shaft 3. This loop 19 is sufiiciently wide to permit the shaft 16 to have longitudinal movement upon the frame 1. This longitudinal movement is provided or produced by means of the shaft fingers 25 which are pivotally mounted upon a bracket 26 formed upon the frame 1. One of the fingers 25 engages a collar 27 secured to the shaft 16 and the other finger 25 engages a cam 28 carried by the shaft 3.
The shaft 16 carries a nut29 at its outer end which is threaded upon the reduced threaded end 30 of the shaft 16 as shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The operation of the device is as follows As the power is applied to the driving wheel 4, the needle 7 will be brought downwardly through the aperture 15 in the throat-plate 14 due to the rotation of the shaft 3 and the reciprocation of the needle rod 6. The hook 17 underneath the throatplate is then swung forwardly by means of for raising and lowering the the cam Q l engaging the end 23 and rocking the arm 21. The hook 17 by this movement, will pick up the thread from the side of the needle for the purpose of forming a loop. lVhile the hook 17 is in this forwardly swung position, the finger 25 will push against the collar 27 comprcssin g the spring 31, moving the shaft 16 longitudinally, and consequently moving the hook 17 in back of the needle. As the shaft 3 continues to rotate the shaft 16 will again be rocked rearard through the medium of the cam A and the rocker arm 21 and when the needle is in this returned position, the fingers 25 will be released from the collar 27 and the spring 31 will return the shaft 16 to its original position. This last motion releases the loop thereby completing the loop or stitch and the machine is again ready to repeat the operation. A suitable thread carrying standard 32 is mounted upon the frame 1 which. standard carries a spool and the ried by said frame, a hook carried by said O hook-carrying shaft, fingers carried by said frame and pivotally mounted thereon for engaging said hook-carrying shaft and reciprocating said hook-carrying shaft, and a cam carried by said main shaft for engaging said fingers and swinging the same, a collar carried by said hook-carrying shaft, and a spring interposed between said collar and frame for normally holding said h0ok- :arrying shaft in a retracted position.
