Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK SEABURY, or YARMourH, MAINE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, JOHN s. SEABURY, AMMI n. SEABURY, ADOLPHUS GRANT, AND N1oHoLAs GRANT,
OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FILLING WOOD TO BE VARNISHED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,804, dated June 11, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Wood-Filling, invented by FRANK SEABURY, of Yarmouth, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved filling for wood, to prepare it for varnishing or otherwise finishing, which shall give a fine finish, leaving all the colors and shades of color of the wood in their natural state; and it consists in the employment of term alba as a filling, as hereinafter more fully described.
In varnishing or otherwise finishing wood the varnish sinks into the grain of the wood, and it is impossible to make a smooth, or, rather, a level, surface by using varnish alone. If the wood is oiled the grain of the wood is left open, and in use fills with dirt, injuring the color of the wood. To remedy this difliculty various fillings have been used; but all have to be colored to imitate the color of the wood upon which it is to be used, and thus injures the color of the wood, since all the finer shades of color are destroyed, as the same color of filling is used for the whole piece.
The coloring of the filling to exactly or even nearly represent the color of the wood is difficult, and can be done with even moderate success only by an experienced workman and one with a good eye for colors.
To obviate these difficulties I employ the substance known in market as term alba. This substance is finely ground or powdered, mixed with oil, and applied in the ordinary manner. This filling is transparent, does not injure the color of the wood, allows all the shades of color and the grain of the wood to show, and, at the same time, is a hard and perfect filling. This filling save a great deal of time to the workman, as it does not have to be colored, and may be applied at once to all the various kinds of wood in the piece of work to be finished-as, for instance, in finishing a floor laid in blocks of different kinds of wood. With the 01d filling each kind of wood had to be filled with its own kind of filling, colored to match, and the greatest care had to be exercised to prevent the filling of one color from touching a wood of another color, as it at once sunk into the grain of the wood and spoiled it, thus requiring a great loss of time in its application.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
The employment of term alba as a woodfilling, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
\ FRANK SEABURY.
