The present invention relates to indexes and more particularly to a system of indexing vvarious subjects or names which mayv be used by offices, libraries and merchants whether having a small or large number of subjects or names .to record. An object of the present invention is to` provide indexes of the character aforesaid wherein a large or a small number of names or subjects may be easily and' readily classified and after once being classified within the indexes the names or subjects indexed will not vcommingled,-but any particular name or subject may be easily and readily found with the greatest celerity.

With the above and other objects 1n view 'the' invention consists of an index book inl which the respective 'pages or sheets are divided up into spaces and each space may be alphabetically or numerically indicated Y wherein any number of names or subjects 'may be classified, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

If a subject matter that has been attended to on say November iith 1.916 is to be attended to again on the 9th day of November 1916, the Ycheck mark in the vertical column designated by the numeral si is erased and another check mark placed within the vertical column corresponding with the date that it should be seen again; if on the contrary the subject matter is to be attended to only on the 9th day ot' December 1916 the check mark is placed Within the blank column, and at the end of November that check mark is erased from that blank column and placed in the 9th column; and if the matter needs attention only on the 9th day of J anuary instead of the 9th day of December, the check mark in the bla-nk column is not erased until the end of December. At the end of the month the keeper runs down the blank column to ascertain if any matter checked in that blank column should be attended to the following month and if so he erases the check in that blank column and places it Within the vertical column corresponding with the date that it should be seen to. Any check appearing on this vertical blank column indicates that the subject mattei' is still under consideration but has been suspended indefinitely or for a later date that Will not come up during the month. VWhen any of the subject matters classified have been closed and terminated, an X mark or any other sign is placed in the lirst column indicated by the numeral 1 as under the title of Linton es. Bastien; in this manner the keeper may readily trace down the first column to ascertain which matters have been closed; any other means may be also used. The modification of this system as disclosed in Fig. 2 is substantially the same and Works on substantially the same manner, but instead of providing a single vertical blank column at the right hand side of the sheet for containing marks indicating that the subject matters on that sheet are to be attended to at a future date, I provide on this system twelve additional columns and each column being designated by the month of the year. In using this system supposing that the Jones os. Miller matter ivas received on November 1st 1916 and that the same is to be answered on November 4th 1916, a. check mark is placed Within the vertical cohnnn designated by the numerai t, but should the Smith rs. Roe matter be received on November 1st 1916 and is not to be attended to until some day in January, a check mark will be placed in the column of January.

In each of these figures additional sheets may be interposed or added.

Each page is shoivn as provided With a marginal tab having on each side a numeral. There are fifty pages, for instance, in a book, and the odd numerals appearing on the one side of the tabs are ranged from 1 to 4:9, While the opposite faces of the tabs are provided with even numerals from 2 to 50. il/hen the book contains more than fifty pages, the numerals would be correspondingly increased. At the top of the subjects column the numeral may appear Which corresponds ivith the numeral of the tab of that page, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2 above the date in the subjects column.

F rom the foregoing it is obvious that With an index diary or memorandum arranged in accordance With the principle of the system herein described, the names or subjects may be written very compactly so that space may be economized and that the matter contained therein may be found at a glance, so that but very litt-le time will be lost in looking up any names or subjects desired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by VLetters Patent is:

1. An index comprising a sheet being ruled to form horizontal roivs and vertical columns, calendar designating marks for said vertical columns, avertical title column for receiving subjects to be indexed arranged at one side of the sheet and parallel with said vertical columns and said. vertical columns to receive indicating marks for connecting the calendar marks with the subject matter indexed and a vertical columnat the side of the sheet opposite said title column for receiving check marks of an indicatin character otherc than those in said vertica columns.

2. An index comprising a sheet being ruled with horizontal and vertical lines to form a vertical title column at one side of the sheet for receiving subjects to be indexed and a plurality of columns arranged at one side of the sheet and parallel With said title column, each of said vertical columns being designatedby a numeral and said numerals corresponding with the days of the month, a plurality of vertical columns for receiving check marks for indicating dates other than those in said vertical columns and saidv numerical designated columnsand vertical blank column being for the reception of check marks whereby the Subj ect matter contained in the title column Will be designated by a day ofthe month substantially as and for the purpose speci- In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
