CARTON FILLING AND sEALiNG MACHINE Be it known that I, GILBERT F. HELSON,
a subject of the King of Great Britain, but having declared my intentions of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at .Bay Side, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Carton Filling and Sealing Machines, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to machines for fillmeans for holding the cartonsand carrying them in the same plane over thebed of the machine; to provide means for first folding and sealing the bottoms of the cartons while being carried forward; to provide means for filling the cartons after their bottoms have been folded and sealed; to provide means for foldin and sealing the tops of the filled cartons, and to provide means for discharging the completed packages from the holders and delivering the same to an attendant for packing.
The details of the invention \are hereinafter particularly described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,'forming a part hereof, in which.

. Upon the extreme end of the rod 147 there is fixed a pair of jaws 154, between which a wheel 155 is pivotally secured by ,a pivot pin 156.

This cam contacts with the wheel 155, each revolution of the shaft 116 compressing the spring 152, and pushing the cut-ofi plate 145 through the slot in the side of the hopper, thus shutting off the discharge of the filling material from the hopper, until the cam passes ofi the wheel when the shut-off plate is withdrawn from the hopper by the expansion of the spring 152, allowing the discharge of the filling material to proceed until again shut ofi 'by the contact of said cam with said wheel.
When the shut-off plate 145 is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 12, it may be re tained in such position for any desired length of time, whether the machine is in operation or at rest, by means of the latch 158, one end of which is hinged or pivotally connected to the bar 118, and can be, swung down behind the collar 151 as illustrated in dotted lines, preventing any movement of the rod 147, while it is thus positioned.

The plate 169, is provided in its upper surface with a longitudinal groove or recess 171 extending from the outer end of said plate to the interior of thetube 168.
Slidably fitted within this recess or groove is a cut-off plate 172, connected to a hub 173, upon one end of a horizontal rod 174. This rod passes through a vertical .slot in the upright 150, and has a bearing '175, in the upper end of a vertical member 176, secured to the upright 150, by a bolt 177, which passes through said vertical slot in the upright, said rod and bolt'beingcapable of vertical movement in such slot.
The end of the rod 174, projecting beyond the upright 150, is fastened to the vertical inner end 178 of a horizontal plate179, in which there is a central longitudinal slot passes. At the outer end of the plate 179, and extending downwardly from its underside, is connected a roller 181, by a pivot pin 182.
Surrounding the rod 174, between the bearing 175 and hub 173 and connected at its respective ends therewith, is a spiral spring183.
184, indicates a cam keyed to the vertical shaft 116, immediately beneath the plate 179, which cam contacts with the roller 181, ateach revolution of the shaft 116.
'llhe action of the cams 157, and 184', on the respective cut-oils are the reverse of each other, that is, when the cam 157, contacts with the wheel 155, it compresses the spring 152, and forces the cut-ofi' plate 145, into the hopper, shutting of the feed of filling material, and when said cam passes ofisaid wheel the spring'152 expands withdrawing rod 174 is drawn outwardly, the spring 183, i x
expanded and the cut-off plate 172, withdrawn from the tube 168, and when the cam roller, the spring 183, conbottom of the'tilhiilar member 166. 1 i Y The cams 157, and 184, are positioned upon the shaft 116, so that the respective shut-offs are operated alternately, that is, when the upper one is closed, the lower one is open, and when the lower one is closed, the upper one is open.
The details of the lower cut-off are most clearly shown in Fig. 13, of the drawings.
The vertical tube 168 extends into a cylinder 185, through a short tube 206, projecting at the top of the cylinder which is secured to the plate 169, and the lower open end of said tube is in alinement with the open top of the funnel 110, which funnel is located within said cylinder, being secured to one end of a lever 186, fulcrumed at 187, outside said cylinder, said lever passing through a vertical slot in that side of the cylinder, which slot is open at the bottom as is the bottom of the cylinder.
The other end of the lever 186, is pivotally connected to the upper end of a vertical rod 188, which is located within a tube 189, the bottom of which is secured to the top of the bed 10. I
Surrounding the rod 188, within the tube 189. is a spiral spring 190. The rod 188, extends through an opening in the bed, and its extreme lower end is bifurcated within which is secured a wheel 191, by a pivot pin 192.
193, indicates a cam keyed to the shaft 123, at a point in line with the lower end of the rod 188, which cam contacts with the wheel 191, as the shaft 123 is revolved, thereby forcing the rod 188, upward against the action of the spring 190, raising the outer end of the lever 186 and lowering the funnel 110, at the other end of the lever into the position shown in Fig. 1. As the cam 193, passes 06' the wheel 191, the spring 190 contracts, drawing the rod 188 downwardly, which elevates the funnel 110 a certain degree within the cylinder 185. This occurs while the earn 184: is acting upon the wheel 181, which withdraws the cut-off plate 172, from between the tubes 166 and 168, allowing a measured quantity of the filling material contained in the measuring chamber 164, to discharge into the funnel, the upper cut-off in the bottom of the hopper 111, being at the same time closed by the action of the cam 157, on the wheel 155. hen the cam 193 again contacts with the wheel 191, the funnel is lowered with its contents directly over the open top of one of the cartons 66, which at that moment has come to rest in such position, while the lower out- 011' has been closed, and the upper cut-ofi opened by the action of the respective cams 18 i and 157.
The quantity of filling material to be delivered into the cartons, isregulated by rotating the measuring chamber 164:, which may be readily done by hand, the lugs or enses ears 165, beingpreferably provided on the exterior of such chamber or facilitating this operation. By the rotation of the chamber 164, in one direction the tube 168, is drawn upward, and when said chamber is rotated in the reverse direction, said tube is lowered; such movements, of course, also either raise or lower the plates 167 and 169 with the cut-off plate 172, and parts connected therewith, the rod 17-1- and its bearing moving in the vertical slot in the upright 150, while the guidemembers 141 slide against the opposite sides of the plates 110 and 112. The roller 181, must be of such width that the can) 184, will contact with it at each revolution of the shaft 116, whether the lower cut-01f is in a raised or lowered position.
The continued intermittent motion of the sprocket chain 18 carries the carton holders containing the filled cartons to the other side of the machine with the sealed bottoms of the cartons still riding upon the supporting strip 108, which is extended on that side of the machine a distance to support the filled cartons while their top flaps are being folded and sealed.
194-, indicates another folder and spreader plate, similar to the plate 69, on the other side of the machine, as heretofore described. The plate 194, is secured to the top guide bar 15, in any suitable manner, and its tapered end in the direction of the approaching carton is preferably slightly curved upwardly so that the first top end flap of the carton with which it contacts is folded inwardly and downwardly under said plate, and as the carton advances its side flaps are spread outwardly by said plate at right angles to the vertical walls of the carton.-
As the carton holder passes beneath the plate 194, it comes into contact with a wheel 195, which bears upon the outer surface of the inner side wall of the carton.
This wheel is pivotally connected in a horizontal position to one end of a short arm 196, extending from a hub 197, keyed to the top of a vertical shaft 198, which is rotatable in an upper bearing secured to the rail 11, and has a bottom pivotal hearing at 199. That portion of the shaft 198, below the rail 14 is surrounded by a spiral spring 200, the lower end of which is secured to the bearing 199, and its upper end to the shaft.
The contact of the wheel 195, with a carton holder forces the wheel outward from the carton, thereby moving the arm 196, and partially rotating the shaft 198, against the action of the spring 200. Integral with the hub 197 there is another arm 201, extending at right angles to the arm 196 and of somewhat greater length than that arm.
202, is another vertical shaft spaced a certain distance from the shaft 198, its lower end being fixed at 203, upon the top of the bed 10, and its upper end fixed in a bracket 204 fastened to the rail 15, by a bolt 205.
207, is a kick lever, fulcrumed upon the shaft 202, the rear arm 208,- of said lever being pivotally connected to a link 209, the other end of said link being pivotally connected with the other end of the arm 201. The free end of the lever 207, is provided with a toe 210, the end of which is preferably rounded as shown. (See Fig. 8.)
At the same time that the folder and spreader plate 194,1-is folding inward one end flat, and spreading the two side flapsof a filled carton, the wheel 195, is in contact with one side of the carton holder containing said tilled carton, whereby through the action of the arms 196 and 201, and link 209, the kick-lever is swung into the position shown in broken lines in said Fig. 8, coming into contact with'the other end flap of said carton and folding it inward as 'illus-.
trated in broken lines in said Fig.
When the wheel 195 passes off said carton holder, the lever 207, is drawn back to its normal position shown in full lines in said Fig. 8, by the contraction of the sprin 200.

mounted upon a shaft 212, which is journaled in brackets 213, secured upon the top of the bed 10, by bolts 214. 215, denotes a glue reservoir, supported upon a bracket 216, secured to the brackets 213 by bolts 217.
. This glue reservoir has an open concave ously revolved while the machine is in o end adjacent the glue roller closes.
There is an adjustable bottom plate 218, fitted in the glue reservoir, the front edge of which plate is preferably beveled and is adapted to engage the surfer of-the glue roller, or to be adjusted to any desired de-.

on the opposite side of the machine and hereinbefore described, and act upon the side flaps at the top of the carton, in the same manner that the others act upon the side flaps at the bottom of the cartons, that is, these folders 221 and-222, are so disposed with relation to each other that one of,the
side flaps is first folded over upon thetop of glue roller 211, which the eyed upon the glue the previously folded end flaps to which it adheres by the glue it .received from the glue roller,'and thenthe opposite and remaining glued side flap is folded over upon the top of the first folded top side flap, thus completely sealing the top of the filled carton. These folders 221, and 222, are connected at one end to the top bar 15 of the guide frame.
The sealed cartons as they leave the folders 221 and 222, are carried under an elon gated fiat strip or plate 223, fastened along one edge to the topbar 15, by rivets or in anyv suitable manner. Thisplate holds down the last fold of the side flaps for a certain distance to assure the setting or drying of the glue. Adjacent that end of the plate 223, where the filled and sealed cartons pass from under it, the re is provided means for ejecting the filled and sealed cartons from their holders, whichwill next be described.

whereby the carton is pushed out of theholder through its open bottom and deposited upon the bed 10, after which the lunger is raised out of the top of the holder y the action of the spring 233, into a position to act upon the next carton in the some manner. The details of the ejector are most clearly illustrated in Fi 9 of the drawings. As soon as one of tile filled and sealed cartons is ejected from its holder and deposited upon the bed of the machine as just described, it is struck on oneside by a usher 2e 8, which pushes it forward upon t e bed 10, a distance of about the Width of one of the carton holders, so that the next ejected carton will be deposited upon the bed closely adjacent to it, and will push the first carton forward again the same distance when said second carton is struck and carried forward by said pusher, the filled and sealed cartons being moved forward in succession in this manner into a delivery chute 249, from which they are taken by an o ,erator on this side of the machine and pacred for transportation. The delivery chute 249, is formed by two flat side strips 250, equally spaced longitudinally, and supported by angle pieces 251, secured to the bed l0.
The details of the pusher mechanism are most clearly illustrated in Fig. 10 of the drawings, and will now he described.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of an endless sprocket chain, means for importing an intermittent rotation thereto, a series of equally spaced carton holders connected to said chain, means for folding and sealing the bottom flaps of the cartons, means for supplying a measured quantity of filling material into the cartons in succession, comprising an elevated hopper, a cut-0d acting therein, an adjustable measuring chamber connected with the lower end of the hopper, another cut-ed acting to open and close the bottom of the measuring chamber, a delivery tube depending from such chamber, means for opening and closing the respective cut-offs in reverse order, a folder and spreader plate by which one end flap is folded and the side flaps spread outwardly at the top of a filled carton as its holder is advanced, a kick-lever with link connections and a wheel connected therewith which wheel contacts with one end of the moving extending longitudinally thereof on both.

In a machine for filling and sealing cartons, the combination of an elon ated bed and supports therefor, a guide rame composed of two horizontal parallel bars arranged one above the other in vertical alinement, and provided with a longitudinal groove in their facing surfaces, said bars extending longitudinally of the bed on each side thereof and havingsemi-circular end connections forming a continuous upper and lower guide member, vertical supports for the same secured to each bar and at their lower ends to the bed, two s rocket wheels horizontally disposed, one ad acent each end within said frame, an endless sprocket chain connecting said sprocket wheels, a series of equally spaced vertical ide plates arranged between the upper an lower bars of said frame and fitted loosely within the grooves therein and connected with said sprocket chain, a series of carton holders provided with lugs secured to the respective plates, means for rotating said sprocket wheels intermittently, means for folding the-bottom end flaps of a carton and spreading the lower side flaps thereof, means for applying glue to said spread flaps,means for folding said glued flaps, an elongated supportfor the bottom of the carton thus sealed, means for filling the carton with a measured quantity of filling material, comprising an elevated hopper, a cut-off acting therein, an adjustable measuring chamber connected with the lower end of the hopper, another cut-off acting to open and close the bottom of the measuring chamber, a delivery tube depending from such chamber, means for opening and closing the respective cut-oil's in reverse order, and means for folding and sealing the top flaps of the carton after it has been filled.
12. In a machine of the character described, the combination of an endless conveyer, means for imparting an intermittent movement to the same, a series of equally spaced carton holders connected to one side carton holder for folding the other end flap at the bottom of the carton, means for aplying lue to said spread side flaps, means or fol ing said glued flaps one u on the other, an elongated bearing for the ottoms of the cartons thus folded and sealed, means for discharging a measured quantity of filling material into such cartons in succession, comprising an elevated hopper, a cut-off acting therein, an adjustable measuring chamber connected with the lower end of the hop 1 per, another cut-off acting to open and close the bottom of the measuring chamber, a delivery tube depending from such chamber, means for opening and closing the respective cut-ofl"s in reverse order, means for locking the said first cut-ofi' in a closed position, means for folding one top end flap and 10B spreading the two top side flaps, means for applying glue to said spread flaps, means operated by contact with the carton holder for folding the other to end flap, means for folding the tWo top g ued side flaps, and means bearing upon sai-rl folded flaps while the vglue is setting or drying.

In a machine for filling and sealing cartons, the combination of an elongated bed and supports therefor, a guide frame supported over said bed parallel therewith and extending longitudinally thereof on both sides, a conveyor chain supported in said frame, means for imparting an intermittenthorizontal rotation to the same, a series of 0 equally spaced carton holders connected to the chain, means for folding and sealing the bottom end flaps of the cartons as their holders are advanced, means for delivering a measured quantity of filling material into the cartons in succession, means for folding and sealing the top end flaps of the tilled artons, and means for-ejecting the filled cartons from their holders, comprising a vertical plunger attached to one end of a horizontal arm, a Vertical rod to which the other end of said arm is fixed, a link to one end of which the lower end of said vertical rod is pivotally connected, an arm pivotally connected to the other end of said link, a bracket to which the other end of said arm is pivotally connected, a shaft, bearings for the same, a cam keyed to said shaft, a roller pivotally secured upon said arm with which said cam contacts at each revolution of said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a tubular standard within which said vertical rod is located above the bed of the machine, and. a spring surr unding said vertical rod with-- in said stancard for returning to its norm f it hit, n
