.The present invention appertainsI to alarms, and aims to provide novel and improved alarm apparatus adapted for use in banks, jewelry stores, and in other public or private places, whereby an alarm signal given ata police station, lire department, orfthe like, for calling help in case of a hold up, fire or similar circumstance.
The present apparatus is adapted especially for use as a burglar alarm, although it can be used as a fire alarm or for kindred purposes, and is adapted especially for use in banks, jewelry stores, and the like, in order that when a hold up occurs, the pro-' prietor ory employee can at various points of the ofiice or room turn in an alarm call at the police station orthe like, without oreating suspicion, whereby a call for assistance is made withoutthe knowledge of the burglar, in order that he may be intercepted. o
The apparatus is so operable, that a signal will be given in the event that the main conductors are cut or broken during or previous to the hold up', as by a maliciously inclined person, so that even if a signal can not be given from the bank, jewelry store, or the like, a signal will be given by the cutting or breaking of one of the main conductors, the alarm being operated electrically.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein 2- Figure 1 is a diagrammatical view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the switch device.
Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the pointer of said device.
The apparatus includes a battery or other suitable source of electrical energy 18 located in the bank, store, or the like, and having its opposite poles' connected by line conductors and 16 with the terminals of the electromagnet 17 of a relay located in the police station, or the like. If desired, instead of using one of the line wires 15- 16, one pole or' the battery 18 and one terminal `of the magnet 17 kcan be grounded to complete vthe circuit by way of ground. The switch 2 located in the bank, or the like, is connected to the conductors 15-16r whereby when the switch is closed, a cross will be provided in the circuit to short circuit. the relay, in order that the relay switch which is normally energized will be denergized. Said relay will also be denergized should the line conductors or wires be cut, thus assuring of the denergization of' the relay magnet 17 in the event that the switch is closed, or the circuit broken or crossed in any manner whatever. The magnet 17 normally attracts an armature switch 19 away from an adjustable screw contact 20 which is connected by means of a conductor with one pole yof a battery or other source of electrical energy 22 and one terminalfof an electric bell 24 or other audible signal device.r The armature switch 19. is connected by a conductor 21 with an electromagnet 27 applied to and carried by a metallic plate 40 preferably disposedin an upright position` `The other pole kof the battery 22 is connected by a conductor 31 with the plate 40, andthe bell 24 is connected by a conductor 23 with a spring contact 32a attached to and insulated from has attached thereto aV radial switch bladek 42, the free end of which is swingable between and engageable with the contacts 32 and 32a. When the blade 42 is raised in horizontal position withr its free end engageing the contact 32, an outstanding pin or lug 43 of the blade 42 is engageable with the hook or catch 86 to hold said blade in raised position, and when the arma-ture 30 is attracted by the electromagnet 27, the catch 36 is removed from the lug 43,V thus enabling the blade 42 to swing downwardly to a depending position in engagementwith the contact 32a. To assist the movement of the blade 42 from theV contact 32 in to engagement with the contact 32, a spring 44V connects the plate 40 and spindle 41 and tends to rotate said blade as indicated. The electromagnet 27', armature 30', contacts 32-32L and blade 42 are preferably located upon one side of the plate 40, and a pointer is located upon the other side of the plate and is attached to the respective end of the spindle 4l. This pointer 45 serves as an indicator, and can be exposed to view whereby ay visual signal is given when the blade 42 is in either position, the pointer 45 swing ing in the, same direction as the blade 42. Normally, the blade 42 is held in engage ment with the contact 32 by means of the armature 30 which acts as a detent, the elcctromagnet 27 will therefore be connected in circuit with the battery 22 and armature Yswitch 19, but said armature switch being normally attracted by the electromagnet 17, will open the circuit. Should the circuit of magnet 17 be crossed or cut at any point, or should the switch 2 be closed, the magnet 17 will at once become denergized, thus releasing the armature switch 19 which will be swung by spring tension against the contact 20', thus closing the circuit including the armature switch 19', contact 20, conductor'25, battery 22, conductor 31', plate 40, bladev 42, contact 32, electromagnet 27 andconductor 21. The armature 30 is thereforeattracted, to release t-he blade 42, which will then swing downwardly away from the contact 32 into engagement with the contact 32a. The circuit of electromagnet 27 is thus opened immediately after the armature 30 is attracted, whereby current will no longer 45 flow through said electromagnet, but the blade 42 in engaging' the contact 32 will close the circuit including the bell 24 and battery 22, said circuit including the battery 22, bell 24', conductor 28, contact 50 32a, blade V42, plate 40,` and conductor 31. Thus the entire electrical energy is used i'or operating the bell t0 produce the audible signal, in connection with the visual signal provided by the movement of the pointer The switch 2 illustrated diagrammatically in F ig. 1, can be taken to represent any suitable switch or contact device in the bank, otiice, or the like, for providing a short circuit.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A device of the character described embodying a plate, an electromagnet secured Vto the plate, a pair of contacts carried by the plate, a spindle journaled in the plate, a. switch arm secured to and extending raA dially in one direction from the spindle, means normally forcing the switch arm toward one contact, a spring tension hook adjacent the second contact and adapted to be swung by the electromagnet when the magnet is energized, a` lug projecting from the face of t-he switch arm and engageable with the'hook to normally hold the switch 75 arm in engagement with the `second contact, and an indicator carried bythe spindle.
