' Application filed November 6,1916. Seria1 No.'1 29,764.
To all whom it may concern; I
Be it knownthat I, Sn'rn S. GILB RNE, a citizen of'the United States, resident of Aberdeen, county of Brown, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Lii'ieI-lolders, of which the following is a specification.
In sinking Artesian wells, considerable difficulty has been experienced in holding the pipe on which the drill is mounted when the sections are being added thereto or removed therefrom to prevent the pipe from dropping to the bottom of the well from which it can be removed only by the tedious operation of fishing. Sometimes, in a deep well, the pipe and drill fall to such a depth that recovery has been impossible and the drill and sometimes pipe of considerable value have been lost.
The object of my invention is to provide means for engaging the upper portion of v the pipe as it hangs suspended in the Well and prevent any possibility of accidental dropping of the pipe during the operation of adding sections thereto or removing them.
A further object is to provide a device of simple, economical construction and one which will be automatic and thoroughly effective in its operation for the purpose designed.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all ashereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of an Artesian well, showing the manner of mounting the drill-supporting pipe line therein,
Fig. 2 is a top view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view showing the means for gripping the pipe to prevent it from dropping to the bottom of the well,
Fig. 4 is a similar view, showing the clamping means in its normal inactive position.
In the drawing, 2 represents the lining of the well, 3 a drill and 4 a perforated section of the pipe line, through which the water is delivered to the bottom of the well to soften the soil and wash it out of the drill holder. 5 represents sections of the pipe line of suitable length, connected to one another and the section 4 by suitable couplings 6. In drilling well, the e secti e added 9 9 r r line as the drill is driven into the ground, and when one drill is substituted for another the pipe is drawn up and the sections removed or separated and it often, happens.
that when the drill has been raised a considerable distance and the workmen are removing a section, that the lower portion of the pipe carrying the drill accidentally becomes loosened from its support and drops to the bottom of the well. Sometimes the upper end of this pipe will be several 111111. dred feet from the surface and evidently it is a diflicult and tedious operation to fish it and the drill out of the holder. Some times this has been found impossible and the drill and the pipe are lost.
To avoid this difiiculty and expense incidental to drilling Artesian wells, I mount a frame 7 on the top of the lining 2 having guides therein for a sliding jaw 8 that is movable by means of an adjusting screw 9 and has a V-shaped face 11 to be seated against one side of a pipe section. On the other side of the pipe section is a jaw 12 pivoted at 13 in said frame and having a V-shaped face for gripping the pipe, said face having a cam surface 14 formed thereon which bears on the pipe surface and clamps it firmly against the jaw 8 on the opposite side of the pipe. This jaw 13 has a lug 15 thereon provided with a longitudinal slot 16 and a fork 17 is pivoted at 18 in said frame and has a pin 19 with its ends mounted in said fork and slidable in the slot 16 of the jaw 12. An arm 20 is mounted on the fork 17 and normally tends to tilt the as the clamping device, operating automatically, will positively prevent any accidental escape of this line and its probable loss. When the arm 20 is raised, the jaw 12 will be tilted to release the pipe and permit the convenient lifting of it and the drill. The adjustment of the jaw 8 adapts the device for pe has at differen diameter,
man and dropto the bottom of the well,
In various ways the details of construction herein shown and described may be modified and still be within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention: A device for supporting an Artesian well pipe comprising a frame supported by the Well lining and through which frame the of said pipe from said first named jaw and second jaw having an outwardly projecting tongue thereon provided with a longitudinal slot, a forked member pivoted in said frame and straddling said tongue and having a pin slidable in the slot in said tongue and an operating arm mounted on said fork, said arm tilting downward by gravity to depress the cam-shaped face of said second jaw and grip the pipe between it and said first named aw.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my handthis 28th day of October, 1916.
SETH S. GILBORNE.
