HAND BRAKE MECHANISM.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 19, 1917. Serial No. 202,789.
of Ohio, have invented new and useful Im-l provements in Hand Brake Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in hand brake mechanism for railway cars, and has for its object to provide a hand brake which occupies the minimum of clearance space on the end or side of a railway car.

invention consists of certain improvements,
arrangement of parts and combination of ele ments as hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now to the parts `by number; the brake operating'device 1 (which will be later described) is attached to the top of an angle member 2 which is riveted to the side sill 3 of a flat car near its front right hand corner. Just beneath the side sill 3 is attached a supporting bracket or brake-shaft step 4 which supports the winding drum 5. This winding drum is similar in all respects to that shown in patent granted to me Junel 9, 1914, bearing Serial Number 1,099,528.
Connecting the brake operating device 1 and winding drum 5 is a square shaft 6 which is socketed in both the winding drum and brake operating device, also immediately beneath the side sill 3 of the car and in close proximity With brake-shaft step 4 is located a sill step7.
On the left hand side of the angle member 2 is shown located a hand hold or grab iron 8 to which the trainman may hold while operating the brakes.
It will be noted that handle 9 can be operated in a number of positions from 9a to 9d. When the trainman is standingon the sill step 7, the handle-9 can be easily operated 'from posltion 9a to 9b. This position is the PatentedSept. 3, 1918.
only one available for operating the brakes when the car is loaded, but when there is sufiicient room on the car for Standing thereon, the handle can be operated from position 9c to 9d. Should the handle 9a slip from the trainmans hand, the lug 10 on the innervface of the handle 9 will strike lug 11 and immediately disengage the handle. Referring now specifically to the construction of the brake operating device, the bevel gears 12 and 13 are suitably mounted in a housing 14 and compactly held therein. The bevel gear 12 is provided with a hub 15 Which-is journaled in a bearing 16 in the bottom of housing 14. The bevel gear 13 is provided on its outer periphery, and integral therewith, with teeth 17 forming a ratchet. The bevel gear 13 is also provided with a long hub portion 18 on one side thereof which is journaled horizontally in a bearing 19 in a housing 14.
On the outer face of the bevel gear 13 is a hub 20 to which is slidably connected the handle 9. The upper end of handle 9 is provided with a slot 21 in which the hub 20 is free to rotate, and oscillate longitudinally of the handle. On the inner face of the handle 9 is located the lug 10 which is adapted to engage teeth 17 of the ratchet While the handle is moved radially upward under the pressure of the operators hand but so formed that it will inmediately release when the handle is'freed by the operator.
The housing 14 is provided with a vertical extension 22 to which is pivoted the awl 23 for engagement with the teeth 17 o the ratchet, the pawl 23 being held in engagement with the housing by means of bolt 24. The hub 15 of bevel gear 12 is held in its bearing by means of cap 25 and pin 26. Combination bevel and ratchet 13 is held in its operative position lwith hub 18 engaging bearing 19 and hub 20 engaging the upper end ofthe handle 9 by means of bolt 28, the length of hubs 18 and 20 being slightly greater' than the engaging members so that when the bolt 28 is drawn up perfectly tight, the bevel gear 13 is perfectly free to rotate. rThe housing 14 is provided also with two rearwardly extending ribs 27 forming attaching means for thedevice.
While the device is here shown applied to a iat car, it is applicable With no change in construction Whatever of the device to practically all classes of freight equipment and particularly adapted to gondola and hopper cars.
It Will therefore be seen that this device is very simple in its construction and can be very easily repaired. By removing the nut from end of bolt 28, the-handle 9 and bevel gear 13 can be removed Without any obstruction whatever. Then if it is desired to remove bevel gear I2, the cap and pin 26 can be removed leaving the housing 14 and all the bther parts of the brake operating mechanism in position onv the car.
i It will therefore be understood that from the ease With which these parts can be removed, that repairs to same can be very easily made and With considerable despatch.
It Will be understood from this description that although the improvements in this invention are simple, they accomplish in a thoroughly practical manner all the objects sought.
I wish `1t further understood that I do not desire to be limited to the specific construc tion or arrangement of elements shown and described, as it is obvious that changes in construction and arrangement may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention. p
Having thus described my invention, I aim in the appended claims to cover -all modifications which do not involve-a departure from its spirit and scope.
VVhatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a hand brake mechanism, a housing,
bevel gearswithin the housing, bearings in Y brakes. A
2. In a hand brake mechanism, a housing,
bevel gears AWithin the housing, bearings in the housing for said gears, a ratchet Wheel connected with one of said gears, a hub member extending outwardly from said ratchet Wheel, a handle engaging said hub member, a lug on the handle radially movable into engagement With the ratchet Wheel and a bolt extending through the housing, ratchet Wheel and handle for retaining the parts in operative position.
3. In a hand brake mechanism, a housing, bevel gears in the housing, said housing provided With bearings for said bevel gears, a ratchet Wheel connected to one of said gears, a handle pivoted concentrically with said ratchet Wheel and provided With a lug radially movable into engagement 'With teeth on said ratchet Wheel and a lug on the housing adapted to engage a portion of the handle to forcibly disengage the handle from the ratchet Wheel.
