v IHERBERT C. SMITH, OF GASTON, OREGON.
LUBRICATOR.
To all lwhom if may concern Be it known that I, HERBERT C. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residingat Gaston, in the county of Washington, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvelnent in Lubricators, of whichthefollowing is aspecification, reference being Vhad to the accompanying drawings.
My inventionrelates to a class of devices used to convey lubricant from a convenient depository to desired parts cfa mechanism.
The obj ect of my invention isfto provide a v device particularly adapted to automatically discharge lubricant upon the gear teeth of I accomplish this object, as well as others, by the construction,
a traction mechanism.
combination and arrangement of parts, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section on line 1 1 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device in operative position upon a chain drive mechanism.
Like letters and numerals refer to like parts in all figures.
A is a wheel with outer gear teeth 4. A is a similar wheel in a form showing chain drive mechanism, with teeth 4. Bis a chain arranged to engage the wheel teeth 4. VG is a portion of a frame arranged suitably near the wheel A. A brush 5 is secured` vided with a threaded compressing cap 12.
It is intended that the lubricant to be employed shall be of the common type of grease or compounds which do not flow.
It will now be apparent that when my device is in operativer position as disclosed, the bristles engage the gear teeth 4 as the wheel rotates beneathk them. When it is desired to lubricate the teeth the compressor Specification of 'Letters Patent. Patgnted Sept,4 3, 1918, Application led October 25, 1,917.y Serial No. 198,428. i Y
capis operated `to force a desired amount yof -non-flowing lubricator into the brush recess 8vfro1n whence it passes downwardly through the passages 9 and between the yrows of of a gear tooth and tends to remove dust and foreign matterl from 1t.v Thereafter the .sec-
ond'frow of bristles, having lubricant Aupon their inside surfaces, engages the same side of the geartooth and deposits the congealed form ofv lubricant upon it. This ,operation continues successively as to each gear tooth whilethewheel is rotating. I contendV that one rotation of the wheel will cause it to reoeive and retain an even and sufficient lubrication by means of my device. It tends to vcontend that I have provided a new device to accomplish these objects in a most simple and easily applied form and that the lubricator is cheaply made and installed, also that it will economize in the amount oflu bricant used, all of which makes it a useful article. I have shown the brush above the chain in Fig. 3 but it may be arranged to engage that portion of the teeth just after the chain engagement therewith ceases, or just before the chain engages the teeth. The
engagement by the brush is illustrated in n Fig. 2.
Having substantially described my device, I claim: Y

In a device of the character described downwardly from the recess between vthe Y bristle rows and a lubricatorreceivingrpassage extending from the recess without the brush, saidrecess and passagesbeing of a form and arrangement adapting them to receive into and through. them V a congtealed lubricant only under pressure from Without, substantially as described.
