v Be it known that I, RALPH A. SGHOENBERG, of NewYork, in thecounty and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Fuse-Plug, of which the following is a specification.
y Heretofore vthe lining ofA fuse 'plugs has 1 been brittle being made usually ofjporce'laln' or other vitreous material which is likely to l the fuse and the fuse wire itself is ,sometimes bev broken or fractured 4by a blow or fall andl y particularly in shippingwith the result that pieces "have blown out and have caused much damage and have also increased fire hazard. Moreover `such breaking or fracture often causes a failure to make lcontact owing to mechanical disarrangement of the parts of actuallyA broken or disarra'n'ged when the plug is screwed 'in position'. l

The inner end of shell 1 is made with an inturned flange 2 that is formed with four crimps 3 which provide. as many elevated seats upon the inner side ol' said flange and four radial' lchannels or grooves uponv the outer side of saidflanga The four seats provided by the erimps 3 support a washer 4 of non-brittle insulating material, preferably compressed fiber, provided with a central aperture 5, and four peripheral'notches 6. The central aperture accommodates the Vcenter contact 7' of the plug which, at its 'outer'endhas mounted upon it a washer 8 of non-brittle insulating -material, preferably compressed fiber, Vthat is held in Vposition againstthe outer side of fiange 2 by the head 9 of Contact 7 The shank of contact 7 consists of two prongs 10 whichare bent or upset so as to clamp washers'4 and 8 firmly to fiange 2. Within the shell l is arranged a lining 11, Fig. 5, of non-brittle sheet inaterial, preferably compressed fiber, that snugly fits the interior of shell 1 'and within which the washer 4 fits snugly. This lining 11 is made from a strip of sheet material of the character specified, formed at one corner with a notch 12 and rolled 'into cylindrical n will be clear that with e given Size of plug I provide a very largechamber for the Vgases so that danger of explosion'is reduced the inner side of shell 1. When this fuse` 13 burns-out the gases are free to pass out of against which a ring 17 is clamped by an out-turned flange 18 at the outer end of shell 1. This ring 17 is of non-brittle insulating materia-l, preferably compressed fiber. disk 21 of mica or other suitable transparent insulating material is placed against flange 18 and held in place by a metal ring 19 surrounding said disk andring 17, said metal V ring having at its outer end an inwardly extending flange 20 bearing agalnst the outer l .19 is grasped and rotated to insert thel plug Side of disk 21 and being turned or crimped inwardly aga-inst ring 17 as at 22 so that the disk 21, flange 18, ring 17 and ring 19 are clamped securely together and cannot be rotatively displaced relatively when ring in its Socket or remove it-therefrom.
In Fig. 9 I have shown another form of shell 1 having a sinuously crimped flange 23 atA its upper end on which the washers 4 and 8 are seated, the undulations providing radial gas channels between the flange and o washers upon both sides of said flange.
What I claim is:
.1., A fuse plug comprising an exterior screw threaded metal shell; a center contact secured to and -supported by one endof said shell a plurality of insulating members between said shell and said center contact and spaced apart to'provide a gas outlet; a fuse within said shell connecting the latter with said contact; a closure for the opposite end of said shell; and a metallic cap Aclamping said closure to an insulating flange at said opposite end of said shell.
2. A fuse plug comprisinga side contact;
l a fuse chamber; a center contact at the bottom of said chamber andan outlet for gases at that end of the plug at which the center contact is located, said outlet being indirect from said chamber to the atmosphere.
3. A fuse plug comprising a shell With an inturned flange having radial grooves; a nf'asherinside of said flange; a washer outside of said flange; anda center contact held by said washers, said flange holding said washers inlspaced relation to form an outlet for gases.4
. .4. A fuseplug comprising a shell with an inturned flange; a washer engaging the inside of said flange but having a portion spaced from said flange to'provide a gas outlet; a second washer engaging the outside ofsaid flange but having a portion spaced from said flange to provide a gas outlet; and a center contact held in place by said washers.
5. A fuse plug comprising a shell body member; an outwardly extending flange of insulating material fastened to said shell; a lining for said shell; spaced washers at one end ofsaid shell; a center contact secured to and supported by said members; a fuse within said shell connecting the latter with said Contact; a closure ofinsulating material for oppositeend of shell, said closure being clamped to the outwardly extending flange.
6.A fuse plug comprising a metal shell having an inwardly extending flange at one end; an outwardly extending insulating flange fastened to the other end of said shell; a center contact supported by said inwardly extending flange; spaced insulating material between said shell and said center contact; a fuse within said shell connecting the latter with the center contact; a closure for the end of said shell opposite said center contact; and a metallic cap clamping said closure to said outwardly extendinggflange.
7. A fuse plug comprising a screw threaded metal shell made at one end with an inturned flange; a closure for the opposite end of said shell; a non-brittle insulating lining for said shell; a washer of non-brittle insulating material secured to said flange;
a center contact carried by said Washer and a fuse connecting said center contact and shell; said flange being formed with outlet passages for the gases. e v

In a fuse plug thecombination of a shell having a flange at each end; an insulating ring engaging one of said flanges; an insulating cover at one en d .of said shell; a ring engaging said cover and insulating ring to clamp them to said one flange; a Contact at the other end of said shell;.`and insulation for saidcontact attached to the other of said flanges. y
9. In a'fuse plug a shell with. an inturned flange having a pluralityj of portions struck up at one surface and grooved on the other; a washer seated on said struck up portions; another washer partially closing said grooves; anda center contact held in place by said Washers. h y
10. In a fuse plug` the combination of a screw shell having av shoulder and an outwardly-extending `flange near one end; an insulating ring clamped between said shoulder and flange; a closure for said yend of the shell; and a metal ringformed with a flange and surrounding said insulating ring and said closure and clamping them together and to the flange on the screw shell.
11. A fuse plug comprising a screw shell body member; a center contact; a plurality of insulating members to insulate said contact from and attach it to said body member and holding said contact in position said members being spaced to provide an outlet for gases. v
12. A fuse plug comprising a shell with a flange; a center contact; a plurality of insulating members held in spaced relation by said flange and held together by said contact, said insulating members-keeping the shell and center contact in insulated relation, but permitting the escape of gases between said insulating members.
13. A fuseplug comprising a screw shell body member; a chamber; a fuse in saidk chamber; avcenter contact connected to said fuse; insulating members supporting said center contact and insulating it from said bodyv member and located at the bottom of said chamber and perforated to receive said center contact; an outlet for gases between said insulating members and independent of said perforations.
14. A fuse plug comprising a chamber;

A fuse plug comprising a side contact; a fusechambor; a center contact at the bottom of said chamber; a fuse connecting said contacts; insulating material supporting said'center contact; an insulating tube forming the inner wall of said chamber; and an outlet for gas between said insulating material.
