FIG.3.

FRED W. HOOPER, OF MGKEESPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
DISINFECTING APPARATUS.
Spegification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
Application filed August 8, 1917. Serial No. 185,092.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED W. HooPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mc- Keesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a disinfecting apparatus and has for its primary object to provide an apparatus of this character capable of mixing water vapor with acid vapor for intensifying the action of the escaping fumes.
An object of the invention is the novel manner. of constructing and associating the parts so that the flame of the burner will be prevented from escaping to a point exteriorly of the apparatus for obvious reasons.
Besides the above my invention is distinguished in the novel manner of concentrating the heat around the vaporizer.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a top view of the container.
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of support.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view fication.
Again referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a support of cylindrical outline and composed of wire mesh in the preferred form of my invention, whereas in Fig. L the support is made of sheet metal with a number of ventilating openings 3 formed in its lower portion. Located within the lower portion of the support number 1 is a self-supporting burner end of the support is inclosed by a shield 5 of a modi- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for 4 while the upper of heat insulating metal. Resting upon the upper end of the support and closing the same is a water container 6 that has depending from its bottom an acid receptacle 9 provided with an outlet 10 disposed in a horizontal plane with the' upper edge of the container 6. When the device is not in use the outlet 10 is closed by a plug 11 whereby the acid within the receptacle 9 is prevented from vaporizing. By this construction it will be seen that the flame from the burner will be prevented from reach'ng a point exteriorly of the support and the heat generated thereby confined around the exposed surface of the container, this being accomplished by the shield 5. The distribution of the heat has the advantage of instantly bringing the acid and water to the boiling point so that the vapors may readily mix. In Fig. 5 I have shown the container shaped to be frictionally engaged with the upper end portion of the support as indicated at 12.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I provide an apparatus of simple construction that may be manufactured at a relatively low cost in which the parts are so associated that the liquid may be instantly vaporized and the arising vapors readily mixed.
- What I claim is:
A disinfecting apparatus comprising a cylindrical wire mesh support, a water container resting on and closing the top of said support, an acid receptacle supported by the bottom of the container and having an outlet disposed in a horizontal plane with the top edge of the container, said receptacle being of a diameter less than the diameter of said "support, a burner at the bottom of the support and a cylindrical shield arranged concentrically of the receptacle and supported by the top portion of the support to form a heat chamber around said receptacle.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRED W. HOOPER.
