Description

G. W. CHECKLEY.
BABY BASKET ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 23. l9lI- 1 277,292. Patented Aug, 27, 1918.
ATTORNEY GEORGE w. GHEVGKLEY, or new YORK-N. Y.
BABY-BASKET ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CHEOKLEY, a subject of the King of England, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby- Basket Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cradles or baby baskets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a basket of the type mentioned which can be secured to the side rail of a bed and supported in operative position thereon.
Another object is to provide supporting arms engageable with a bed rail, and a basket detachably associated with said arms.
A further object is to provide said arms with means for yieldably supporting said basket. 1
A still further object is to so incorporate the features of construction above mentioned as to produce a compact and durable device that will be efficient in operation and reasonable as to cost. 1
The above and other objects and advantages of this invention will be in part described and in part understood from the following description of the present preferred embodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a bed rail illustrating the application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of my device and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through one of the supporting arms.
In the drawings showing the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 indicates an angle iron such as is commonly employed to form one side of a bed frame. Secured to the angle iron and spaced a suitable distance apart are a pair of clamp members 2 and 3, each having the depending end portions 4 and 5. The .clamps 2 and 3 are supported on the top portion of the angle iron and the ends 5 engage the depending or side portion of the latter. The ends 4 engage and extend a suitable distance below one lateral margin of the top of the angle iron, and are equipped with thumb screws 6 or other suitable fastening means to retain the clamps in position. A sleeve or socket 7 is associated with each of the ends 5 for a purpose to be hereinafter set forth.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2'7, 1918.
Application filed May 23, 1917. Serial No. 170,521.
A pair of tubular supporting arms 8 and 9 are provided each having its lower end bent at right angles to provide the lateral extension 10. Angle foot members 11 are provided which have reduced ends 12 adapted to be inserted in the ends of the extension 10 and secured in. position by means of rivets or other fastening means. The said angle members .11 have their opposite ends tapered to form the downwardly extending projections 13 which are received in the sockets 7 A set screw 1% is carried by the sockets to retain the supporting arms in position.
A supporting block 15 is positioned in each of the supporting arms 8 and 9 a certain distance above the extensions 10 and is adapted to support a coil spring 16 or other cushioning means. A sliding rod 17 is mounted in the upper end of each arm and is supported by the spring 16 which engages the lower end thereof. The upper end of the rod 17 projects beyond the end of the supporting arm and is bifuracted to rovide the branches 18 and 19, with one 0 which a suitable thumb screw 20 is engaged. A
pin 21 is carried by the arm and operates in an elongated slot formed in the rod adjacent its lower end. The slot and pin connection restricts the travel of the sliding rod.
A body portion or basket is indicated at 23 and may be of any suitable material and the shape thereof is equally. optional. A plate 24: equipped with a projecting stud 25 is secured to each end of the basket 23, the plates being positioned close to the upper margin of each end, centrally of its lateral margin. v
In assembling the device, the clamps are first secured to the side rail of the bed the distance between the clamps being deter mined by the length of the basket. The supporting arms are then associated with the clamps, and the rods slidably mounted in the upper ends of said arms receive and support the basket 28. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, I
the studs 25 secured to opposite ends of the basket are received between the branches 18 and 19 of each rod 17 and the thumb screw 20 carried by one of the branches is adapted to be moved into engagement with the stud, and when so engaged will hold the basket against oscillation; When desiring to impart movement of the basket, it is only necessary to movethe thumb screw out of engagement with the studs and the basket can then be rocked or entirely removed from the support.
It is to be understoodthat the construe-- tion shown embodies the preferred form of 5 my invention but I reserve the'right to make 10 I:claim-:
A device of the character described inw cluding a p-air of Iclamping-.members eaclv mcludmgwa, sleeve, aipair of angular-members leach having one endinserted anza sleeve,
0 areduced portion on the. other end of the angularmembers, a zpairiof angular tubular lTlGlHlJBlS recei-vmg atone end thez'reduced extensions to dispose thea'opposite ends in vertical positions, a partition block in each vertical portion of each tubular member, slotted and-bifurcated rods slidably mounted in the tubular members, pins entering the tubular members to limit movement of the rods, coiled springs interposed between the partition blocks and rods to urge the latter :upward, acrib, trunnions at the ends for engagement in the bifurcated portions of the rods, and setscrews extendingacross the ibifurcatedz portions to prevents displacement 04: the crib.
In: testimony whereof I afiix myzsignature .in presence of two Witnesses.
