Be it known that I, BERNEY 'KNUnsnN; a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county/0f Denver and State of Colorado, haveinvented' certain new andmetal can may be readily and quickly tapped in o'rder'that the contents maybe removed as desired.

The'up'per end portion of the sleeve is formed internally non-circular and is designed to receive the non-circular por- "tien i of the shank 1 when the latter is inserted through thebit. Thelower end of the sleeve 7 is provided with a circular flange 8 that is reinforced upon its upper side by a slightly enlarged portion 9. The -under-- neathsurface of the flange 8 is dished as indicated by the numeral 10 for a purpose which will presently appear.

The upper terminal end portion of each of these screw threads 11 terminates at points in spaced relation to the dished under surface 10 of the flange 8 so as to provide a space of suflicient width to receive the thickness of the metal'forming the can top, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of .the drawings.
When it is desired to tap a'metal can top, it is simply necessary to assemble theparts as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings and then insert the point 3 through the can top, after which the handle 2 is rotated and screwed under pressure until the sharp threads 11, have cut their way through the top. When the hollow bit has been rotated until it is tight with the can top it will be so securely tapped through and attached to the metal can top as to provide a non-leakable joint between the bit and'can top. As soon the hollow bit has been arranged in position, the handle andshank are removed from the bit thus leaving the hollow bit to serve as a tap whereby the contents of the can may be readily poured therefrom as desired.
Inorder to prevent the contents of the metal can from evaporating or to exclude dirt or any other foreign substance therefrom, I provide a metal closure cap 12, shown in Fig. 4, which is of substantially cylindrical shape and is formed to provide tapering walls 13 that are designed to frictionally engage over and with the tapered outer surface of the sleeve 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings. This cap 12 serves as a double purpose, and in the first instance is used as a protector cap for the pointed end of the shank 1. In order to be subjected to thisuse, thehollow bit 6 is reversibly mounted upon the shank as clearly shown inFig. 1 of thedrawings, the cap 12 being frictionally mountedupon the end of the sleeve 7 so as to entirely and completely inclose the pointed end'of the shank, which arrangement is found desir able in commercially handling the device. Secondly, the closure cap is used to seal the can by beingplaced frietionally over the top of the tapered sleeve 7.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a novel form of sani tary can tap which may be readily and quickly applied to a can. I

A can tap comprising a handle, a shank projecting from said handle and formed with a pointed end, a hollow bit slidably mounted upon said shank and adapted to be reversibly mounted thereon end for end, means for locking the hollow bit to said shank for rotation therewith, and means .carried by said shank and adapted to prethrough the can top and said shank removed therefrom to provide a tap for said can, and
a closure cap for said hollow bit. 7
7. A can tap comprising a handle, a shank extending therefrom and formed with a pointed end, a hollow bit detachably mounted on the outer end of said shank and comprising a sleeve, a flange formed on the sleeve, edge screw threads formed on the sleeve between said flange and the end of the sleeve, means to limit the inward movement of the bit on the shankso that the outer end of the screw threaded sleeve will lie adjacentthe pointed shank end, and means for keying the bit to said shank.
8. In a device of the class described, the, combination with the pointed shank there of, of a hollow bit detachably mounted on the outer end of said shank and comprising a sleeve, a flange formed on saidsleeve, sharp-edge screw threads formed on the sleeve between the outer end and said flange, said sharp-edge screw threads gradually increasing in diameter from the sleeve end to said flange, and means to lock the bit to the shank, the bit being so positioned upon the shank that the said screw threads and pointed shank end form a conical inserting end. I

In a device of the class described, the combination with the pointed handle shank thereof, of a hollow bit detachably mounted on the outer end of said shank and comprising a sleeve, a flange'formed on said sleeve, sharp-edge screw threads formed on the sleeve between the outer end and said flange, the inner terminal ends of said threads terminating in spaced relation to said flange, and means to lock the bit sleeve to the shank.
10. In a device of the class described, the
combination with the pointed handle shank thereof, of a hollow bit detachably mounted on the outer end of said shank and comprising a sleeve, a flange formed on said sleeve, said flange formed with a dished outer surface, sharp-edge screw threads formed on the sleeve between the outer end and said flange, the inner ends of said screw threads terminating in spaced parallel relation to the dished surface of said flange, and means to lock the bit sleeve to said shank.
