Description

v. YORK i w. G. BLACK.
OIL WELL DRIVE.
APPLICAUQN HLED JULY 9,1911.
Patented Aug. 2T, 1mb.
LQTYG.
'Cio a" county of Orange and 'VICTOR YORK G. BLACK, 0F BBE'A,
in-wann Leitrim.l
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, VICTOR Yoan and WALTR G. BLACK', both citizens of the United States, residi at Brea, in the tate of California,
have invented a new and useful. Oil-Well derric ,therebyendangenng Drive, cation.
of which the following is a specifi-` Our invention relates to the art of ldrilling oil wells by the so-called rotary system. In that system it is common ractlce to rotate a strin of drill pipes which carry the cutting bit at their lower end. This drill ipe is ordinarily rotated by a rotary; table w 'ch is driven through suitable c ain from a gas engine. In the ordinary orm of table drive a sprocket is placed directly adjacent to the table, and a driving chain is run across the derrick floor from suitable mechanism located at the side of the derrick. These chains form a serious life hazard, frequentl breaking and whipping about in the t e lives of the men workin on the derrick floor.
The principal ob'ect of our invention is to provide a drive which will have all the ilexibility and resiliency of the present chain drive without its dangers.
Referring to the drawings, -which are for illustrative purposesonly:
Figure 1 is a plan view of equipped with our invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus attached to the derrick, as viewed in the direction of the arrow 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the apparatus shown in Fig. l.
ln theform of our invention illustrated a derrick in these drawings, a rotary table 11 is shown,
this table being suitably secured to the derrick floor 12 and engain the drill pipe 13 or a drill stem secure t ere The table 11 is provided with beveled teeth 14 which are engaged by a bevel gion 15 secured to n stud shaft 16 turning ly in bearings 70. The stub shaft 16 is engaged by a coupling 18 on a jack shaft 19 which is carried ina bearing 20 near the table 11, and in a bearin 21 at the edge of the derrick floor.
ounted on the extreme end of the jack shaft 19 is a bevel gear 22 which is engaged by a bevel pinion 23 carried on a secondary shaft 24.- The secondary shaft 24 is Speoieation o! Letters Patent.
Application med July 9, 1917. Serial'lo. 179,558.
' mounted in bearings 25. In addition to the bevel gear 23, which is rigidly secured to the shaft 24, a sprocket 26 is also rigidly secured to this shaft, carrying a chain 27 which passes over a sprocket 28 rigidly secured on a rima shaft 29. The primary shaft 29 is iven y means of a sprocket 30 and a chain 31 from a rime mover 32, in accordance with standar practice. The shaft 29 also drives a shaft 35 which carries certaip1 apparatus needed inthe drilling of the we The method of operation of the invention 4 will be obvious, the engine 32 driving the shaft 29 through the chain 31, and'in turn driving the shaft 24 through the chain 27. The shaft 24 drives the shaft 19 through the gears 22 and 23, and the shaft 19 drives the shaft 16 through the coupling 18. Shaft 16 drives the table 11 through t c bevel pinion 15' and the ar teeth 14. The table in turn drives the rill pi 13.
It will be no that two chains 31 and 27 are interposed between the prime mover 32 and the drilling string 13. It will further be-noted that these chains are both oil' the drilling floor, so that advantage can be takeny of their resiliency without endangerip around e table 11.
We claim as our invention 1. An oil well drive for use in a derrick comprising a rotary table, a bevel gear formed thereon; a bevel pinlon drivin said bevel gear; a 'ack shaft'on which sai Patented Aug. e7, 191s. .n
