This invention relatesto certain new and useful improvements in elimination or throw out devices for cost keeping'time recorders.
In keeping costs with time'recorders, 1t had been found desirable to divide the working hours of the day into a number of units and to disregard the time whenthe shop is not working. In this way, the clerical work connected with cost keeping is simplified. Consider for example a man starting to work at 8 oclock and working until noon, then having an hour off for lunch and 1n the afternoon working one hour. The old forms of cost keepers would show on the card In 8.00, Out 12.00, In 1.00 Out 2.00. With the present embodiment, the card would merely show 0.00-050 or a total of 5 hours work performed. The advantages of such an arrangement will be obvious.

r In more detail in the drawing the frame 10 of the machine carries the usual and well known time recorder parts, namely impression plates 11, handle 12, carbon ribbon 13 fed forwardly by the operation of the handle 12. To print upon the card the card shown in Fig. 8 is placed in the chute M and the handle 12, is pressed-down. Impression plate 11 is first swung downward and then its operating spring swings it upwardly'striking the lower face of the card and taking an impression. of the, positioned type wheels which'are above the carbon ribbon 13. The type wheels are preferably .three in number namely, 14, 15, 16. 14 is the minutes or units wheel and is driven by means ofgears 17 and 18 from a drive shaft 19; The hour wheel 15 preferably having 20 characters thereon is advanced .once each revolution of the minutes or units wheel by suitable transfer devices T. These devices also are adapted to advance the day wheel 16. once each revolution of the hour wheel. Just before the impression platen operates,
theunits wheel 15 is alined and locked by means of a pawl 20 which cooperates with disk 21, secured to the notches in an alining unitswheel as shown in Fig. 7. The pawl 20 is operated through a rock shaft 22 which vice which is adapted to clutch and declutch the said shaft from a clock driven shaft 23 as will now be described.
7 Clutch.
The clock driven shaft carries at its lower end a boss 24 which has secured thereto a disk 25 having a plurality of spaced holes 26 therein as shown in Figs. 3 and 6. Type wheel driving shaft 19 is axially alined with shaft 23 and extends up through disk 25 and boss 24 and is freely rotatable with respect thereto. A clutch disk 27 is free to slide vertically upon a sleeve 28 which is pinned to the shaft 19. This clutch disk carries two clutch pins 29. One of'these clutch pins passes through a hole in a bent plate 30 which plate is securely fastened to the upper end of the sleeve 28. The plate 30 causes a rotation of shaft 19 upon the rotation of clutch disk 27 and allows a vertical movement of the said disk. Below the clutch disk is a stationary plate 31 having a series of circumferentially spaced holes 32 therein.
In order to shift the clutch disk vertically I provide shifter arms 33 which are secured to a rock shaft 35. These shifter arms having notches at their edges to receive the edge of the clutchdisk. When the clutch disk is in raised position as shown in Fig. 6, the clutch pins 29 pass into the holes 26 in disk 25 and with this position of parts the shaft 19 is driven in unison with clock shaft 23. lVhen the clutch disk is in lower position (see Fig. 4) the clock driven shaft 23 and type wheel driving shaft 19 are disconnected from each other. The type wheel driving shaft is also looked against movement as the lower ends of the clutch pins have entered the holes 32 in the stationary plate.

Clock driven shaft 23 through gears 37 and 38, shaft 39and pinion 40, drives an elimination wheel 41. The gearing is such that the elimination wheel makes one complete revolution every twenty-four hours. The elimination wheel has a circumferential T slot in its face and this slot is adapted to receive tripping devices 42. In Fig. 1 two of these tripping devices are positioned at noon and one oclock and others are positioned adjacent the evening off position. 'Pivoted adjacent the eliminationwheel is an elimination lever .43 which carries a tooth adapted to be engaged by the trip devices. Referring to Fig.1 it will be seen that the elimination lever is lifted at 12 .oclock and then allowed to drop only to be again raised and lowered at one oclock. The opposite end of the elimination lever through part 43 and pin. 44 connects with V a counterweighted rocklever 45 pivoted on shaft 46. Freely rotatable-on this shaft is a ratchet member 47 which has secured thereto a cam member 48. Rock lever 45 has. pivoted thereon a spring pressed feed pawl 49 which engages the teeth of ratchet 47 as shown in, Fig. 5. The ratchet wheel 47 is fed forward one step eachtime the elimination lever descends after being raised by the trip device on the elimination wheel. a counterweighted retaining pawl 50 preventing a retrograde movement of the ratchet wheel. Rigidly secured to rock shaft 35 which carries the clutch shifting arms 33 is a follower pawl 51 which rests against the cam 48. The pawl follower is held against the cam by a counterweight 52 and the weight of this counterweight is sufficient to elevate the shifter arms when the followerdrops into the depressions in the cam. V V
The operation of the device will be readily understood. There are one-half as many first trip device (positioned at 12 oclock) and ending after the elimination lever has dropped after passing the second trip device (positioned at 1 oclock). During this entire period the cam disk will be held down in the position shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and since the clutch pins are out of the holes'26 in disk 25 the clock driven shaft 23 and type wheel driving shaft will be disconnected. During this period the type wheels will be locked in the manner previously explained.
At all other times the follower 51' will rest in the depressions in the cam 48 and the clutch disk will be elevated by counterweight 52. Vith this condition of'parts the clutch pins have passed into the holes inat the exact point to which it had been advanced by the clock mechanism. On account of'the varying positions of the clock driven disk it'is necessary that the clutch disk 27 pins 29 should not be positively forced nto upper position as the holes might. not
mits the clutch pins to register in'the holes be in exact alinement with the pins. The counterwe ght arrangement obviatesthe use of a posltlve clutch liftingdevice and perin the disk 25 when the clock has advanced the disk into such a position that the holes 26 register with the pins. For ordinary purposes it has been found that 10 divisions on the minute wheel and ten holes are satisfactory but it is to be understood that any number of divisions and holes may be employed depending upon the degree of accuracy desired upon the record card.
My invention is susceptible to various modifications, as will occur to those skilled in the art, and it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to the precise form shown and described. What I claim as my invention is particularly set forth in the ap pended claims.
I claim:
1. In a timerecorder, in combination with type Wheels, driving means therefor, and a clock driven element, of clutch members connected to said clock-driven element and said driving means respectively, one of said clutch members being weight-pressed to move in a direction to engage the other, means for positively clutch member, against the stress of its weight, in a direction to disengage from its fellow member at the beginning of a nonworking period, and means whereby said weight-pressed clutch member, when released from the control of said positive actuating means, is restrained from reengaging its fellow member until the clock-driven element has moved to the succeedingdigit position.
2. In a time recorder, in combination with type wheels, driving devices therefor and a clock driven element, means for coupling and uncoupling the clock driven element and the driving devices,

3. In a time recorder, in combination with type wheels, driving devices therefor, and a clock driven element, of means for coupling and uncoupling the clock driven element an the driving devices, said means comprising clutching elements associated with the driving devices and complementary devices as sociated with the clock driven element, means for operating the clutchingelements, said means comprising a ratchet and a cam associated therewith, a cam follower operatively connected with the clutching elements and a counterweight to move the same in one direction, a pivoted lever to advance the said ratchet wheel and a clock driven elimination wheel having provisions thereon for rocking the pivoted lever at certain set time periods.
