To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EARNnsT J. ASHBY, citizen of the United States of America, residing at Henderson, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trowels, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to an improvement in trowels and particularly to a pointing trowel for use in filling and finishing mortar joints.

The improved trowel is designed to effectively carry out all the functions of an ordinary pointed trowel while at the same time avoiding waste of material and saving labor in the finishing operation. To the end of securing such results the improved trowel is formed with a magazine head in which operates a pressure strip or finger, presenting a plain surface for the application of the material the finger being held retracted to form a bottom for the magazine through the medium of aspring, and the magazine in advance of the finger being adapted to be filled with material to be forced into the joint by pressure upon the handle connected to the finger.

The invention in the preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which;

The improved trowel comprises a magazine 1 preferably formed of a single length of material bent to provide spaced parallel side walls 2 and 3 and an integral connecting end wall 4. The space between the side walls is open at the bottom end at what may be termed the rear end, and said side walls are of approximately triangular shape in elevation, that is, of maximum height at their upper ends-from which they gradually reduce in height to their inner ends. Pivotally supported at 5 between the walls of the magazine at their inner ends is a handle 6, in which through the medium of a vertical bolt member 7 is secured a pointed fin ger 8. The latter forwardly of the handle portion is projected in the form of a straight non curving member of uniform width and thickness throughout, and from its connection with the handle at the relatively forward end upper portion of the latter the pointing finger inclines downwardly and forwardly, in. its normal position to the extreme lower edge of the forward end of the magazine, the forward wall l of the latter being slightly curved to permit the up ward sweep of the free end of the finger without interference. The forward wall t is projected below the lower edges of the side walls 2 and 8 and formed to present a grip 9 in which is secured one terminal of a leaf spring 10, the opposite terminal of which is secured in the forward portion of the handle 6 preferably through the medium of the bolt 7 The spring is given the double curve form shown so as to normally maintain the handle in such position as to hold the pointing finger in the normal position previously described, whereby said finger will form a base for the magazine.

The upper end of the end wall 4 is extended above the upper edges of the side wall and the projection thus formed is extended forwardly in the plane of the upper edges of the side walls 2 and 3 to form a finishing 0r smoothing element 11.

The disposition of the pointing finger with respect to the handle, that is its angular inclination is such that when the handle is swung on its pivot with respect to the magazine to the limit of its operative position the pointing finger alines throughout with the upper edges of the side walls 2 and 3. If desired the finishing or smoothing element may be concaved as shown to slightly round the surface finished.

In use with the parts in normal position the mechanism is filled with mortar or other material and the trowel as a whole is pressed against the surface so that the edges of the side walls 2 and 3 aline with or are disposed slightly beyond the boundary edges of the crevice to be filled. The handle is then swung on its pivot causing the pointing finger to force the material cleanly and evenly into the crevice with all necessary pressure and, as the implement is drawn along the crevice to continue the filling operation the smoothing element finishes and smooths the material applied.

The device as a whole is readily and conveniently constructed and easily operated, resulting in a material saving of labor in that considerable less time is required in the application of the material, and furthermore there is no Waste of the mortar or other material used.

lVhat is claimed is:

1. A trowel including a magazine, a handle pivotally connected to the magazine, a pointing fin 'er secured to the handle, and a spring secured at its respective ends to the handle and to the magazine said spring normally holding the finger to form a botton-1 for the magazine, the means for secun ing the spring to the magazine serving to limit. movement of the linger under the influence of the spring.

Washin ton amaze and bottom and remaining end Wall of the magazine being open, a handle pivotally mounted in the open end of the magazine, a linger carried by the handle and projecting into and approximately filling the space between the side walls of the magazine, and a spring terminally secured to the handle and to the magazine remote from the handle, said spring normally holding the handle in such position as to arrange the finger as a bottom for the magazine.
