For operating doors and steps, it has heretofore been proposed to employ a pneumatically. controlled piston device, and in order to insurequietand smooth nal movement of the`doors,the fluid pressure on the -piston device is so regulated that the same acts as a cushionl to prevent the too` rapid final movement of the piston devicev and consequently the doors.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a spring device for cushioning-the action 'of the 'motor piston device.
In the accompanying drawing; Figurev 1 is a central vertical section of a door and step controlling device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 an inverted.- plan view thereof; Fig. 3 a side elevation thereof, partly in section; and Fig. 4 a transverse section thereof on the line -a of Fig.2.
As shown in the drawing, the construction may comprise a cylinder casing having piston chambers 2 and 3 containing the respective pistons 4 and 5 connected 'by a piston rod 6.

According to my invention, lthere 1s secured to the cylinder casing 1, a spring casing 12 containing oppositely able abutments 13 and 14between whlch is interposed a coil spring 15. A e The abutment 13 is provided With a longitudinally extending lug 16,' apertured at its outer end for a pin 17 and extending through an aperture in the abutment'14 is a screw threaded rod 18 havinga `nut 19 for arranged movengaging the outer face o f the abutmentand` adapted to be' screwed into a member 20 which is 'apertured to receive a pin 21. The rod 18 is slidably mounted in a cylindrical extension 23 of the abutment 13 and is slotted for a guide pin 22 secured to the inner end of the extension, so as to prevent rotation ofthe rod 18..-
AMounted on the oppositeends of the pins 17 and 21 at opposite sides of the spring casing are links 24 and each link is provided with a centrally arranged slot 25 within which a cam lever 26 works.
The cam levers 26 are secured to opposite ends of the shaft 9.
The pins 17 and 21 work in slots 27 in the'links 24 so as to permit relative move- 'ment of the pins in onedirection with respect to the links.
In operation, when the 'doors are to be opened, fluid under pressure is supplied to one of the pistons, say piston 4, while the other piston is connected to the atmosphere. The piston device is then shifted to the right, causing the rack 7 to rotate the gear segment 8 and shaft 9 so as to eect the opening of the car doors and steps. Upon a predetermined movement of the parts, the
cams 26 will engage the links 24 at the ends of the slots 25 and move the links toward the left, so that the pin 21 acts to force the abutment 14 inwardly and thus compress the spring 15, the opposite ends of the links 24 being free to move relatively to the pin 17 by reason of the slots 27.
It will thus be seen that the final movement of the piston device is resisted by the spring 15 so that a cushioning of the movement of the piston device is produced with a corresponding retardation and cushioning of the doors and steps.
