To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HOMER J. RnsI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure ,Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improvements in figure toys and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means whereby a figure may be produced and assembled with convenience and facility and whereby the figure can be created to closely simulate a soldier of the United States Army and now commonly known as Sammy.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved figure toy including a trunk, a head and limbs together with means whereby these several parts may be assembled in such a manner as to permit the same to have relative movement.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein a bracing member is comprised in a head construction to facilitate the maintenance of the head and more particularly the face portion thereof in desired formation.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved figure toy whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the. ac-

companying drawings, wherein:

As disclosed in the accom anying drawlngs T denotes the trunk of t e body, L the legs, A the arms, and H the head. Each of the legs L is formed of an outer lamination 1 of cloth cut in the desired shape and which is stuffed with a suitable filler 2. Care is to be exercised to have the bottom ofthe foot F of each leg flat so that when the parts of the figure are assembled, the same may be caused to stand in upright position without support. The inner or upper end of the leg is closed by a ca 3 of Card-board or other material and arranged 011 a predetermined irngle relative to the longitudinal axes of the The trunk T is also formed of an outer lamination 4 of cloth and in which is stuffed a suitable filler 5. The lower portions of the trunk fabric at opposite sides have secured therein caps 6 of cardboard or the like and arranged on a suitable angle and which are adapted to coact with the caps 3. Before the cap 3 is applied within the upper or inner end portion of the leg, the double wire 7 is disposed through the cap at substantially its axial center and the strands of the wire are threaded through a flat button 8 which contacts with the outer face of the cap 3. Before the filler 5 is applied within the trunk or lamination t the strands of the wire 7 are directed through an opening 9 at substantially the axial center of the trunk cap 6. The strands are also continued through suitable openings in a plate 10 overlying the inner face of the trunk cap 6. The extremities of the strands of the'wire 5 are twisted one about the other but overlying the returned spring member 11 carried by the plate 10 so that the adjacent caps 3 and 6 will be maintained in contact yet permitting the wire 7 to aiford a swivel connection between the leg L and the trunk T. After the legs L have been applied to the trunk T the'filler 5 is inserted up to the neck portion and the neck portion is then closed by stitching. The upper end Cir portions of the trunk T at opposite sides and adjacent the neck have embedded therein the caps 12 also of card-board or the like to afford means whereby the arms A may be secured to the trunk T.

Each of the arms A is formed of an outer lamination 1d of fabric cut in proper form and the inner or outer end of each arm is closed by a cap 15 of card-board or the like. Underlying the inner face of the cap 15 is a button 16 through which are threaded the strands of the wire 17. The wire strands are disposed through the cap 15 at substantially the axial. center thereof and continued through a plate 18 in contact with the inner face of the cap 15. The free extremities of the strands of the wire 17 are twisted one about the other and over the returned spring member 19 carried by the plate 18 whereby the

12 and 15 are maintained substantially in contact yet the arm A is in swivel connection with the trunk T. The outer or free extremities of each of the arms A is provided with the longitudinally disposed rows of stitching 20 so that said extremities may be caused to simulatea hand.

Fitting within the upper end or neck portion of the trunk T is a cap 21 of cardboard or the like and underlying said cap at substantially the axial center thereof is a button 22 through which are threaded the strands of the wire 23. The wire is disposed through the cap 21 and through a cap 24: closing the lower end of the head H. The cap 2% is also made of card-board or similar material. Contacting within the inner face of the cap 2% is a plate through. which the strands of the wire 23 are directed. The free end portions of the strands of said wire are twisted one about the other and overlie the return spring 26 carried by the plate so that the head H is effectively maintained in assembled position relative to the trunk T. The head H comprises an outer lamination 27 of fabric and is provided with a filler 28 of suitable material. The face portion of the head H is formed of the fabric 29 which may be readily colored to approximately flesh tint.

The plate 25 is provided with an upstanding extension 31 which is continued by the forwardly directed extension 232 and the extension 32 is continued by the upwardly directed extension. 33 which terminates adjacent the fiat top of the head H. The extension 32 is continued by the forwardly directed portion terminating in the depending part The extensions or portions 31 to 35 inclusive are preferably formed of a single strand of wire, affording an efiective brace for the face portion of the head H. The extensions or

31 and 32 effectively reinforce the chin portion of the head while the portions 34. and 35 serve as an effective brace for the forehead part. The mouth in the head of the figure is indicated by an insert 36 of cloth prefe'ably red in color and the extremities of said insert 36 are secured to the portion 31 by the brace within the head H whereby the proper forming of the face of the head H is facilitated and such formation maintained. The nose 37 is suitably formed upon the face and the connecting wire 38 is interposed between the lower portion of the nose and the brace wire to further facilitate the maintenance of the face portion of the head in proper formation. The eyes 39 comprise buttons of desired size and type and which buttons are connected by the wires a0 with the reinforcing wire within the head H. The wire coacting with each of the buttons 39 is beveled so that the free extremities of said wire may be twisted one upon the other rearwardly of the wire brace to facilitate the proper arrangement of the eyes or buttons 39 so that a simulation of the human. face is materially facilitated.

The cars 41 each comprise a strip of suitable material sewed to the outer lamination 27 in proper position and in order to further imitate an ear a button 42 overlies the strip all and said button is held in applied position by the wire 13 also suitably anchored to the portion 33 of the wire brace within the head H.

After the wire brace has been properly positioned within the head lamination 27 and the various parts secured thereto, the filler 28 is placed within said lamination and the top of the head sewed. The cap or hat 44: is then sewed to the marginal portion of the flat top of the head H. After the parts of the doll have been assembled a cloth jacket of a cut similar to the uniform of the American soldier is applied to the body B and the arms A, and suitably applied to the legs L and to the adjacent portion of the body B are fitted the trousers 15 of the full cut as a simulation of the style of trousers used in the United States Army. The feet F have applied thereto the cloth covering 46 in simulation of army shoes and wrapped about the lower portions of each of the legs L is a fabric strip 47 in imitation of the leggings generally worn by the American soldier or Sammy.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a figure toy constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and, facility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention. is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spiritthereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement andformation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. A figure toy including a trunk section consisting of a stuffed body, limb sections each consisting of a stuffed body, the inner ends of the limb sections being provided with caps, caps arranged at the opposite ends of the trunk section, a button underlying each of said caps, a strand doubled upon itself and disposed through each of the buttons and through the cap of a limb section and a cap of the body section, the portions of the strands within the body sec tion being twisted one about the other, a plate overlying the caps carried by the body section, each of said caps being provided with a returned resilient finger engaging the twisted portions of the sections.

2. A figure toy comprising two relative movable sections, the adjacent portions of each of the sections being provided with a cap, a button underlying one of the caps, a strand doubled upon itself and threaded through the button and extending through both of the caps, a plate contacting with the inner face of the second cap and having a returned spring member, the adjacent ends of said strands being twisted one about the other, the spring member contacting with the inner end of the twisted portions of the strands.

3. A figure toy comprising a body, a head consisting of an outer lamination of flexible material, a filler within the head, a member secured to the base portion of the head and extending along the face portion thereof, members secured to the face portion of the head to simulate eyes, and strands extending from said members and secured to the first named member.

A figure toy comprising a body, a head consisting of an outer lamination of flexible material, a filler within the head, a member secured to the base portion of the head and extending along the face portion thereof, members secured to the face portion of the head to simulate eyes, and strands extending from the mouth portion of the face of the head and secured to the first named member.

5. A figure toy comprising a body, a head consisting of an outer lamination of flexible material, a filler within the head, a member secured to the base portion of the head and Copies of this patent may be obtained for extending along the face portion thereof, members secured to the face portion of the head to simulate eyes, members secured to the ear portions of the head, and strands connecting said last named members and the first named member.

6. A figure toy comprising a body, a head consisting of an outer lamination of flexible material, av filler within the head, a member secured to the base portion of the head and extending along the face portion thereof, members secured to the face portion of the, head to simulate eyes, and strands extending from said members and secured to the first named member, the lower portion of the member extending within the chin portion of the face.

7. A figure toy comprising a body, a head consisting of an outer lamination of flexible material, a filler within the head, a member secured to the base portion of the head and extending along the face portion thereof, members secured to the face portion of the head to simulate eyes, and strands extending from said members and secured to the first named member, the upper end portion of the member having a forwardly directed extens1on.

8. A figure toy comprising a body, a head consisting of an outer lamination of flexible material, a filler within the head, a member secured to the base portion of the head and extending along the face portion thereof, members secured to the face portion of the head to simulate eyes, and strands extending from said members and secured to the first named member, the upper end portion of the member having a forwardly directed extension terminating in a downwardly directed extension.

9. A figure toy comprising a body, a head consisting of an outer lamination of flexible material, a filler within the head, a member secured to the base portion of the head and extending along the face portion thereof, members secured to the face portion of the head to simulate eyes, and strands connecting the nose portion of the face and the member.
