' To all whom it may concern! -HARRY RUBIN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE.
. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 27, 1918.
Application filed August 31, 1917. Serial No. 189,111.
Be it knownthat I, HARRY RUBIN, a citi: zen of the United States, residingjat Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Light Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to electric lighting fixtures and particularly to that type of the same wherein a reflector and bowl constitute a two-piece electric lighting unit, this unit being associated wlth a combined socket cover'or sheet and a support V therefor, the support being capable of vertical adjustment to properly position the light-diffusing bowl, which is suspended therefrom, relatively to the height of the room in which the fixture is to be located.
My invention also consists of the parts and the constructions, arrangements and combinations of parts which I will hereinafter describe and claim.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and'in which similar reference characters indicate like partsin the several views;
Figure 1 is a side elevation partially in [section of a two-piece electric lighting unit embodying my iIlVGIltlOIL, showing the parts in section.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail to be hereinafter referred to.
In carrying out my invention, I prefer to employ in association therewith the so-called buckle, 10, through which the conducting wires are usually led tothe interior of the lamp-socket, said buckle having threaded V openings at opposite ends, oneot' these opentings being adapted to screw into engagement with a nipple or shontpipe extension, 11, or like part fixed to or projecting from v the ceiling or from an outlet box, not shown, or other fixtureloeated n the ceil ng.
The lower threaded opening of the buckle is designed for engagement with one end of a threaded pipe, 12, thelower' end of this pipe having threaded engagement with an opening formed in the top ofa support, A, and which support isshown/ as comprising an upper disk,'13, into the'top of which the lower end of the pipe, 12,. is threaded;
and a lower disk, 14;, appropriately spaced from the upper disk and the two disks being P'rigidly connected to form a cage-like struc-' ture by means of vertical rods, 15,. spaced equidistantfaround the suppoit, said rods surfaces of the aforesaid rods, 15.
having their lower ends passing through openings in the lower disk, 14:, and one or both ends of the rods being threaded to reccive suitable securing nuts, 16. In the 60 present instance, nuts, a, are shown on the lower ends of'the rods and said rods may be internally threaded at their lower ends for the purpose of receiving thev threaded shanks of small hooks, 17, which project ver tieallybelow the rods, and from which the light-diffusing bowl 18, may be appropriately suspended.
The means for suspending the bowl and which bowl may be of any desired design, may be varied without departing from the J salient features of my invention,:but I pre-i fer as the suspending means small rods, 19, as such elements throw but little shadow on the ceiling when the light is burning, the- 76 lower ends of these rods being in turn connected to small hooks, 20, mounted in or on the sides of the bowl in a manner well known in this 'art. \Vithin the cage-like structure formed by 80 the upper and lower disks, 13 and 14, and the annular series of rods, 15, is mounted a combined socket and socket-cover, or shell, the socket, 21, being of any approved type .and being threaded to the lower end of the 86 tube, 12, and the socket cover, or shell, being in the form of a porcelain or'like non-conducting cylinder surrounding the socket and interposed between the same and the inner T1118 00 construction rigidly unites the socket and.
. socket-cover, or shell, to the cage, since the upper end of the socket-structure bears against the upper disk, 13, and the lower end of the porcelain socket cover, or shell, seats directly against the upper beveled surface or seat, 14:, of the lower disk, 14, said disk, 14, being open at the center so as to allow the plug of the usual electric light bulb to be entered therein and'screwed into and out of engagement withthe socket.
The structure described may be used connection with canopies of difi'erent depth, as it is capable of vertical adjustment as a whole, since the cage and support may be screwed up and down on the threaded con, nection or pipe, '12, to thus raise and lower the support relativelyto the canopy and accordinglyraise or lower the light-diffusing bowl which is suspended from the lower end tively to the height of the ceiling of the room in which the light is to be installed.
Associated with the light-diffusing bowl is a reflector, 22, of porcelain or other suitable material and which reflector I prefer to fashion in the form shown, namely, that said reflector shall have a greater diameter I than the vlargest diameter of the bowl and parts may be' readily assembled and they}.
may be quickly detached for renewing and repair purposes. rangement 18 such that I am enabled to compensate for irregularities or differences in the shape and size of thereflector, or canopy.
The parts of the device are all rigidly secured together and maintained in roper position with respect to each other, an practically all the metal parts are inclosed and insulated by the socket-cover or shell, which is preferably made of porcelain or other noncorrosive and non-conducting material, and
which cover or shell is itself inclosedby the funnel-shaped central projecting portion of the reflector or canopy= h Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
