object the invention to provide a veneerblock whichcan-be inexpensively manufactured and applied-,to constitute an inexpensive yetthoroughlyefficient and attractiveexterior finish for buildings.
A further object of the inventioniis; to provide the block with novel meansfor attaching it to the sheathingor frameto securely hold the block in place, and to enable the block tobe moved without disturbing the adjacent blocks.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the blocks laid 7 together.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged of one block.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one ofthe anchor members.
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of a block with a modified form of anchor member. 7
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the modified form of anchor member.
Fig. 7. is a perspective view of a different :lgorm of block with the wire anchor memers.
The block 1 as illustrated is of rectangular contour, although it may be of any suitable size and shape, being of slab or plate form and composed of concrete or other plastic material. The blocks can be laidin courses against the sheathing'or frame, and the exterior surfaces of the blocks can fraginental elevation .Applicaitionfiled August 13,1917. Serial No. 185,970. 7

any suitablafinish. If desired, the block can-abeprovided with a marginal groove 2 inits edges, to match the grooves of the companion. blocks, for receiving mortar or other bonding material, but these grooves neednot be used- The block is also provided with a marginal rabbe t' 3 at its outer face and along its .edges, whereby the complementarv rabbets of theadj acent blocks provide grooves separating the faces of the blocks,to provide an i" ornate finish, j
9' Each block is provided with several anchor members ;5 adjacent to the edges thereof, and so arrang'edas not to mar the face of the block.
E ach anchormember 5, as shown in Figs. 2,3 and 4, is bent fromwire doubled longitudinallyand .having a loop 6 at its intermediate portion or bend flush with the rear surfaceof the block and extending to the corresponding edge thereof, said edge of the block being provided with a transverse groove 4 extending from the rabbet 3 and intersecting the groove 2. The loop 6 is arranged at the rear or inner end of the groove 4. The member 5 has a portion 7 extending forwardly from the loop 6 and embedded within the block near the groove 4, and the member has a portion 8 extending at an angle from the portion 7 into the block away from the edge or margin thereof, the portion 8 terminating in diverging or hook-shaped terminals 9 which constitute means for anchoring the member securely within. the body of the block. These anchor members 5 are molded within the block, and are therefore embedded firmly therein, the portion 8 and terminals 9 being disposed be tween the front and rear faces of the block, and the portion 7 extending rearwardly to the rea surface and having the loop 6 extending at an angle therefrom to the rear end of the groove 4. Thus, when the block is placed against the sheathing or frame 11, a nail 10 or other securing element can be readily inserted rearwardly through the groove 4 and loop 6, to be driven into the sheathing or frame, wherebythe head of the securing element or nail 10 will bear against the loop 6, and firmly clamp it against the sheathing or frame. In this manner, the
block canbe readily fastened to the supporting structure, with the securing elements at the margin of the block so as notto encummay have any suitable finish. The'edges of the adjacent blocks can fit snugly together,
without interfering with the attachment of the blocks to the supporting structure, and should a block become broken or otherwise injured, it can bereadily removed without disturbing the others. This enables repairs to be made easily. 7' i In the modifications shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the anchor member 5 is formed from a strip of metaL'and this anchor member 5 ElilbOCl'lGS the outstanding apertured portion or car 6 resembling the looped or apertured portion 6. The member '5 has a portion 7 extending forwardly from the ear 6, and a portion 8 extending at'an' angle from the portion 7 and provided at its end with a coiled or bent back portion 9 to" properly anchor the member within the block. 1
Fig. 7 illustrates an elongated rectangularblock 1 having the marginal groove 2 and in its outer face, the transverse grooves 3 dividing the exterior surfaceof the block into squares. This block has the'Wire anchor members 5' embedded therein, although thedsheet meta-l anchor members 5 can be use Copies of this patent may be o'btained fu Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A block of the class described, provided in one edge with a transverse groove; and an anchor comprising an outer end having an aperture alined with the groove, a body disposed at right angles to said end, and a shank disposed at right angles to the body and projecting therefrom in an opposite direction to said end, said outer end of the anchor being partially embedded in the block and extending alongthe rear of the block within the periineter'of the block and beyond" the base of the groove, the outer surface of said end being fl'uslithroughout its length with the rear face of the block, the body being disposed parallel' to saidedge of the block and being embedded in the block in spaced relation to said edge ofthe block, the shank being embedded in the block.
In testimony that I- 'claim the foregoing as my own; I have'hereto affixed my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
