Specification of Letters Patent.

Application rfiled December 17, 1917. Serial No. 207,492.
which the seams will not open in use.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in i which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a table equipped with a top embodying the invention,
Fig, 2, an enlarged section taken on line 2 2 of Fig, l,
Fig. 3, an enlarged transverse section taken through the central portion of the table top at right angles to Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, a detail view of a portion of one edge of the table top, and
Fig. 5, a detail section illustrating the mounting of one end of a plurality of binding rods employed in the construction.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a table top made up of a plurality of tongued and grooved stri s or boards 6, arranged adjoining each ot'iier to constitute the table top in the usual manner. 7 is provided centrally in said table top and a sink 8 of any usual or ordinary construction is arranged under saidy sink opening, suitable water faucets 9 being arranged to discharge into said sink.
rlransversely alining openings l0 are provided in the table top strips or boards 6, one of said openings being provided at each side of the sink opening 7 and adjacent the ends of the strips, and binding rods 11 are passed loosely through said openings 10. Recesses l2 are provided inthe outermost table top boards or strips surrounding the ends of the rods 11 and compression springs 13 are arranged in said recesses on the cor- A sink opening responding rod ends between suitable washers as sho-Wn. Nuts 1i are threaded on the ends of the rods to serve as a means of adjusting the tensions of said springs and for drawing the table top strips or boards tightly together. Plugs 15 are inserted in the outer ends of recesses 12 to present a smooth surface. and protect and conceal the inclosed parts.
By this arrangement it will be observed that the binding rods 11 being arranged to 'move freely in their openings, the strips 6 are of course equally free to move on the rods, so that said strips may expand and contract under varying weather or other conditions Without compelling movements of the rods. Likewise the spring at each end of the rod provides for expansions and contractions of the boards or strips at the corresponding side of the table without af-y fecting the relations of the rods in the other side of the table. This arrangement is especially advantageous at the edges of `the sink openings where movements of the rod wouldftend to open the seams or joints in the table top and to disseminate moisture through the openings l0 to the different boards or strips in the table top.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable'of lvariation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited t0 the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-ent is:
1. A table top comprising a plurality of adjoining strips, there beinga sink opening formed through said table top and Qpenmgs in said smps at each side S sain?
