Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2'7, 1918.
Application filed. October 15, 1917. Serial No. 196,577.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSCAR E. W. BRUNK, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Pad-Support for Pressing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for pressing garments and other kinds of fabric, and has special reference to the device for supporting the garments or fabrics upon the buck of the machine.
An object of the invention is to provide a frame adapted to be placedupon the heated buck of the pressing machine to support the pad upon which the garment or fabric is placed so that the pad will not be burned or scorched, and as a result thereof become broken or disintegrated and drawn through the foraminous top plate of the buck of the machine.
Another object is to provide a removable device of the character mentioned comprising spaced upper and lower walls composed of woven wire through the spaces of which the steam may freely pass during the operation of the pressing machine, but
which will support the pad so that it will not be burned or scorched and as a result thereof be drawn through the head of the buck.
In the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated the invention,
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of a pressing machine having the present invention in connection therewith.
Fig. 2 is a plan view'with a part of the pad removed to ilustrate the construction of the frame. r
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The pressing machine with which I have illustrated my present invention is similar to that disclosed in the patent to Benjamin Weinberger, No. 1,193,093, dated August 1, 1916. The moistening, heating and pressing mechanism will be generally described in order that the present invention may be fully understood, not only as to its construction and arrangement, but also as to its cooperation with a pressing machine. The machine of that patent includes a press head 1 which is movable toward and away from the buck or support bv which the garment orfabric to be pressed is supported. The
buck is in the form of a frame and comprises a foraminous top plate 2 secured to a frame so as to form therewith a chamber 3 which is closed from communication with another chamber 4 in the frame.
Steam from any available source of supply may be admitted to the interior of the press head through a supply pipe 5 having a normaly closed valve 6 arranged to be opened at will of the operator by manipulation of a handle 7.
As illustrated the foraminous top plate 2 forms the upper wall of the chamber 3. H eretofore machines of this type have been equipped with ads secured directly to the top plate of t e buck for receiving and supporting the garment or cloth to be pressed by pressure of the head 1. In the machine shown, the buck may be heated by steam admitted to the chamber 1 through a pipe 8, though the buck may be otherwise heated, if desired... The garment or cloth is moistened by steam forced from the head 1 through the garment and the openings through the top plate 2 into the chamber 3 from which the steam is withdrawn and discharged through a pipe 9 controlled by the manipulative valve 16 and connections therefrom. A machine in which the pad is secured directly to the top plate 2 of the heated buck burns and scorches the pad, so that it breaks and parts thereof are drawn into the chamber 3 and thence into the discharge pipe. It is with machines of this class, irrespective of the particular arrangement thereof, that my present invention is arranged to cooperate.
My present invention consists of a device in the form of a hollowforaminous frame adapted to be placed upon the supporting frame or buck and to support the pad out of contact with the top plate of the buck so that the pad will not be subjected to the destructive action ofthe heat aS formerly.
As illustrated the device is in the form of a frame the contour of the side edges of which conform generally to the edges of the upper wall of the buck. The frame comprising an upper wall 11 and a similar lower wall 12, both formed of woven wire, as shown, and retained in spaced relation by an interposed spacing strip 13 placed between and secured to the upper and lower walls adjacent to their edges. In addition there are several other spaclng strips 14 arranged and secured proper relation and position hetween the upper and lower walls so that said walls will not be bent when the garment or fabric is pressed thereon, ft is prefer able, though hot essential, that the spacing strips 13 and i l be of some fabricated material, such as packing.
. To this frame the pad. 15 composed of fabric or other appropriate material, is secured for receiving and supporting the garment or fabric to be pressed. The pad may be secured to the frame by any desired fastening connections, such, for instance as the bands 16 in connection with the pad and passing around or oth rwise engaging the frame.
The frame thus constructed is intended to be placed upon the top plate 2 of the back so as to support the pad 15 out of contact with the heated parts of the pressing chine. In operation the device is applied as illustrated in Fig. 1 in which the garment or fabric may be placed upon the pad, and then subgected to'pressure hy operation of .the head 1 in the usual manner. During this operation steam is introduced through the head and upon and into the garment by opening the valve 6 by means of the handle '7, thereby moistcning the garment simultaneously with the-application of the mechanical pressure; its usual, the steam for moistening the garment is admitted only for an instant, while the rment is wider pressure whereupon he oted in usual e valve s to allow steam or moisture condensation quickly dried.
The frame thus constructed is readily in terchangeable from one machine to another and requires no binding connections to retain it in place. is apparent that the specific construction and arrangement of the frame may be varied without in the least doparting from the invention. 1 do not re strict myself to any specific features other than as set forth in the appended claims.
l hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
the edge portion of said frames in spaced relation and preventing the passage of steam laterally from between said frames, and a series of additional spacing strips also interposed between said frames and supporting them in spaced relation.
