To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roy T. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-lVheels, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is to proivde a spring wheel with an improved arrangement of resilient members.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved manner of mounting the resilient members to the parts which they are to be secured to relative to the construction of a spring wheel.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved spring wheel which can be quickly assembled, and in which the resilient members are secured in place without the aid of bolts or clasps.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings exemplifying the invention, and in which,

eferring to the drawings, 1 designates the inner hub, 2 the outer hub or resilient retaining ring, and 3 the telly to which any suitable type of tire l can be mounted. Formed in the hub 1 are a series of horizontally arranged holes or pockets 5, said holes being arranged concentrically around the bore 6 of said hub,each of said holes being for the reception of an engaging portion 7 of a resilient member 8, there being a plurality of said members 8 arranged in pairs radially around said hub 1. Each of the resilient members 8 comprises a length of round spring wire of the proper weight which is bent on itself forming a coil 9, said wire continuing in an approximate straight line after the coil has been made, and terminating into a loop 10, said loop being oppositely disposed to the engaging portion 7.
As afore stated, these resilient members 8 are arranged in pairs radially around the hub 1, each engaging portion 7, of each of the members forming a pair, being introduced into their respective holes 5 on 0pposite sides of the hub, in which each pair will form a triangular mounting, (see Fig. 2), in which the loops 10 of a pair of members S will be mounted in a slot 11, there. being a series of such slots arranged at equal distances apart in the outer hub 2. loops 10 when mounted in pairs in their respective slots 11 are adapted to be engaged over an annulus 12, which is centrally arran ed on the outer peripherv on said outer hub 2.
In order to prevent radial displacement of each of the members 8, a notch 13 is formed adjacent each of the holes 6 in the outer periphery of the hub 1. Formed in the pe riphery of the outer hub 2 adjacent each side edge thereof is a series of circularly ar ranged slots let, each of said slots being for the reception of an inner end loop 15 of a resilient member 16, each of said resilient members being arranged in'pairs, and arranged radially around the outer hub 2, each of said members 16 having a transversely arranged portion 17 formed on their outer ends, each of said transverse portions 17 being mounted in an opening 18, there being a plurality of said openings formed in the telly 3.
Mounted adjacent each set of circularly arranged slots 14, and against the inner periphery of the outer hub 2 is an annulus 21, said annuli adapted to be engaged by" the looped ends 15 of the members 16. These resilient members 16 are ,similar in construction to the resilient members 8, (see Fig. 5), which has been designated as one of the members 8, the portions 7 and 10 thereof being very similar to the portions 15 and 17, respectively, of the resilient member 16, and the c0119 representing the coil 19 of said member 16. In order to facilitate the mounting the parts of this improved wheel together, the outer hub 2 is preferably split as designated at 20.
When an improved wheel of this character has been mounted together as described, it is readily seen how the outer ends of the resilient members 8 will hold the annulus 12 in place, whereas said annulus 12 in turn with the circularly arranged slots 11 will support the outer ends of said members 8,
These 1 and the annuli '21., while supporting the inner ends of the resilient members 16, are in turn supported by said inner ends, in view of the fact that the resilient members 8 and 16, which will be above the inner hub 1, will. be under tension in which the weight of the car or vehicle carried by said inner hub will be suspended from the outer hub :2 and telly 3, thereby providing great resiliency combined with a maximum eliioieney in resisting abnormal strains. Since the upper resilient members 8 and 16 are under tension. it is to be seen that when vehicle equipped with this improved spring wheel is moved downwardly that the lower resilient. members 8, which will be directly beneath the load, will be forced dowi'iwardly. in this connection, said nienn ers will not be under compression on account of the fact that the engaging ends of said members 8, relative to their eng gement with the outer rub a, will slide downwardly through their respec tire slots ll, thereby compensating resiliency of the outer hub and ;e on er hub is moved downwardly the inner ends of the members 16, ul 'chare also beneath the load will be :torced upwardly thr ugh their respective slots 14:.
