ROBERT ANDERSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BRACELET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 11918.
Application filed May 23, 1917. Serial No. 170,361.
To oZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT Axnnnsorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Bracelets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to improvements in flexible bracelets, and the same has for its object more particularly to provide a flexible bracelet which will be similar in appearance to the flexible box bracelets now in use, but which will require less material in its con struction than is required in the construction of the flexible box bracelets as heretofore made.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide a flexible bracelet of this character, the links of which are more quickly and economically formed than are the box links of the bracelets now in use.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide an improved method of constructing the links and of assembling the same to form the bracelet.
Other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
To the attainment of the aforesaid objects and ends my invention consists in the novel details of construction, and in the combination, connection and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then. pointed out in the claims.
In the accon'ipanying drawing showing an illustrative embodiment of the invention;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bracelet constructed according to and embodying the invention Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the upper side of a blank from which a link is formed;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the other side of the blank;
Fig. i is a perspective view of a link formed from the blank shown in Figs. and 3;
Fig. 5 is a bottom or inverted plan View illustrating the manner of assembling the links to form a bracelet; and
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view showing the links in their assembledposition.
In the flexible box bracelets now in use each link is in the form of an inverted, hollow box comprising a body portion and downwardly extending side walls and end walls. As the end walls of the links are not exposed to view when the bracelet is worn they do not in any way affect the appearance of the bracelet, but, on the other hand they increase the cost of the bracelet by an amount equal to the cost of the material of which they are composed. In the bracelet: constructed in accordance with the invention as hereinafter described, the links are formed without end walls, thereby effecting a saving in the amount of metal used, and a consequent saving in the cost, without in any way detracting from the appearance of the bracelet.
Referring to the drawing 10 denotes a bracelet formed of a plurality of links 11, and provided with a suitable catch or fastening device to enable it to be placed upon, or removed from, the wrist of wearer. as shown, each of the links 11 has a jewel 12 set therein, but it will of course be understood that the jewels 12 may be omitted, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Each link 11 is U-shaped or channelshaped and comprises a body portion 13 having side walls 14 extending downwardly therefrom andat right angles thereto. The
lower edges of the side walls 1 are sli htly shorter than the upper edges thereof, for a purpose hereinafter described.
At one of the ends of each of the side walls 14, and in the plane thereof, is a rounde dprojection l5, and at the other of the ends of each side wall 14: is a similarly shaped recess 16. Adjacent its recessed end each of the side walls 1% is provided with a depressed or offset portion 17, the outer surface of which in the plane of the inner surface of the side wall 1% and forms a seat 18.
The links 11 are preferably formed in the following manner. By means of a suitable die or punch a blank 19 is punched or stamped from a sheet of metal, which blank 19 is provided with projections 15, recesses 16, and offset portions 17 adjacent the ends thereof, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Simultaneously with the stamping of the blank 19 from the sheet of metal, transverse grooves 20 are formed in the under surface thereof, the grooves 20 being spaced from the ends of the blank a. distance equal to the desired height of the side walls 14 of the link 11. If the links 11 are to be provided with jewels, a hole 21 is then formed in each blank 19, in any suitable manner, intermediate the grooves 520. The end portions 0 each blank 19 are then bent downwardi along the grooves 2Q until assume a position at right angles to the central portion of the blank 19, thereby forming a link as shown in Fig. i,
in forming the hracelet the requisite number of links are a ,nibled in alinement with one another W h the projections of each link 11 resting 1p the seats 18 and engaging t adlgS.+3illltl\ i. li' hile ll are secure held in their alined posiion drilled through the projections and the register-- ingg offset portions 1 l 1 7 ndicated in as 5, the holes drilled preferably first in one FBlCQ oil tle 1111 {S 11 and then in the other sid thereot.
After the holes have been drilled pins 20 are inserted theretlnrou gh, end the ends Lt the pins 23 are then soldered or OQllGlWlSQ fixedly secured With n the holes in the rejections 15.
As the pins are not lixedl seen-red Within the holes to in the offset portions 1? of the lin in end as t inner edges of the side Walls 1; are slightly shorter than the outer edges thereon as 21i3-"1.0 set forth, the lllliIS 11 are tree to more r to one another to permit the bracelet to placed ar und and to conform to tl ture of the wrist of the Secret.
hen the bracelet is u on the 1 3, the wearer it will present the same appearance as is d by flexible bracelets formed of links such as are new being used,
