Description

CHARLES H.TESSY.
Reflecting Lamp-Burner. `No. 127,560. Patentedlune 4,1872".
QUWSSS:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- CHARLES H. TESSY, OF U'IICA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN REFLECTING LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 17,660, dated June 4, 1872 antedated May 25, 1872.
'resents a side elevation of my improved reflecting lamp-burner. Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of my improved detachable, conical, lower reflector; and Fig. 4 represents a similar under-side view of the removable reflecting hanged flame-cap.
The wicktube a of my improved burner rises from the usual base b,.which screws on the lamp, and it does notvextend below the base. arms c extending from the base, and is, on its upper edge, provided with projections e, which hold the chimney upon the flange d of the rim. A removable conical reflector, f, provided at its apex with a slot, g, to allow it to be slipped over the wick-tube a, is supported upon and within the perforated guard-rim d, so as to be easily removed and replaced upon its shielded seat. This reflector f is made of highly-polished metal or of glasspreferably of the latter material, as it can be produced at an exceedingly small cost, and therefore easily replaced whenever one is broken or-injured. To enable the ready removal of this reflect-or the iianged flame-cap k, having a refleeting under side, is made removable by means of a socket, h, attached to it by arms j, which socket fits on the wick-tube and holds the cap to the same. The flange m of the cap 7c forms springs n to hold the chimney in position. oV represents the wick-feeder arranged in the usual manner.
I am well aware that lower reflectors and reflecting ame caps have been heretofore A perforated rim, d, is supported byy used; but in all cases the lower reflectorhas been made a fixed portion of the burner, and, consequently, if the reflector is injured the whole burner must be thrown away. Nor could in those cases the reflector be made of glass, but must be made of the same material as the burner. By making this lower reflector removable, however, I not only make the construction of the burner itself more simple, but
am enabled to produce a reiiector of glass the inside of which may be covered with any substance or paper to imitate lookingglass, which not only makes a much better reiiecting medium and more` easily kept clean, but is also much cheaper than metal; and thus by my improvement, if the lower reflector becomes injured or broken, it can be easily removed by taking off' the flame-cap, and then replaced by a new one at a trilling cost, without the necessity of' throwing away the whole burner.
Having described my invention, I claiml. The removable conical reflector f, supported upon and within the perforated guardrim d, and arranged to be removed from and replaced upon its shielded seat when desired, as described. t
2. The combination, with the lower removable conical reflector f, of' the removable, reflecting, spring-flanged ame-cap 7c, arranged in the manner and for the purposes herein described.
3. In a refiectiug lamp-burner I claim the combination of the removable conical reiiector j', arranged, as described, upon its shielded seat or guard-rim d, the removable flame-cap 7c, and its supporting-socket and Wick-tube, the several parts being combined, constructed, and arran ged for use as described.
CHARLES Il. TESSY.
