UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTlVAT ORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 127,658, dated June 4, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, GEORGE STIBER, of Gogan Station, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a cultivator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the I annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a planview of my machine.
' A represents a center beam, upon the front end of which is secured a cross-bar, B. Upon each side of the center beam A, to the under side of the cross-bar B, is pivoted a side beam, A, therear ends of which are held at any desired distance from the center beam by means of a cross-bar, B, attached on top of the center beam at the rear end, and secured at any desired point to the side beams by screws a a. These screws may be moved in other holes upon said cross-bar, and thus the side beams adjusted to any desired angle. 0 0 represent the handles, attached at their front ends to the center beam A, and adjusted upon short standards I) D attached to the rear cross-bar B, so that the handles can be raised or lowered at will to suit the person operating the same. To each of the side beams A A are attached three standards, G G, each with a shovel, E, secured to its lower end, and to the center beamA is attached a similar standard, G, with shovel E. All of these standards have tenons a a at their upper ends, which pass through mortises in their respective beams, fastened by wedge-keys b b. The standards on the side beams are constructed so as to have shoulders on the rear and outer sides of their respective tenons, while the standard G has a shoulder on both sides as well as in rear of its tenon, said shoulders bearing against the under sides of their respective beams, keeping the standards perfectly steady. To the ends of the front cross-bar B the shafts H H are attached, and upon a cross-bar connecting the same, near their rear ends, is pivoted the whiffletree I. On a standard on top-of the center beam A is pivoted a bar, J, one end of which rests upon the center beam A and the other end upon the whiffletree when the horse is attached, thus rendering the whole cultivator stiff and easy to move or turn around, and obviating the difficulty in passing stumps, stones, and other obstructions in the way of the cultivator.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a cultivator constructed substantially as herein described, the shafts H H,-whifdetree I, and the bar J, pivoted to a standard on the center beam of the cultivator, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 7th day of February, 1872.
GEORGE STIBER.
