JOSEPH D. HASKETT AND BBAD SANDERS, OF ELIZA B'ETH. CITY, NORTH CAROLINA.
WHEEL-CULTIVTOB.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that -We, J osErH D. HAsKE'r'r and BRAD SANDERS, citizens of the United States, residing. at Elizabeth City, Pasquotank county, and State of North Carolina, have `invented and' discovered certain new and useful Improvements in lVheel-Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in the details of construction and relations of parts of Walking cultivators, and it especially relates to the means for carrying the plows or teeth, Whereby they may be adjusted into various relative positions to each other and in relation to the work, and secured in such adjusted positions at Will, all as Will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. By the use of such invention, the operator is enabled to maintain the plows or teeth in such relation to each other and to the Work` as Will bring the most advantageous results under the various conditions that may be encountered.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, the figurc is a` rear perspectire View, illustrating the machine as it appears With our improyements embodied therein.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the Wheels, B the axles, and C the bealns or main partsof the frame which are connected at their forward ends by an inverted U-shaped member 10 in the usual manner. They are also preferably connected at their rear ends byanother inyerted U- shaped bar 11, and the frame includes horizontal brace bars 12 connecting the Vertical legs of the two U-shaped niembers near their upper ends. Theguiding handles 13, are supported onthis frame, one being preferably arranged to swing and connected to guide the Wheels a's in oneparticularly shown and described 1n our co-pending apv-p'lication Serial Number 12,639, filed March 6, 1915, but all of these parts are, or may be, of any approved or desired constructionand arrangement, as will be readily understood.
Piyoted to the rear ends of the main beams C of the frame are the plow carrying frames consisting of side bars 14 and 15 pivotally connected at their forward ends by cross bars 16 and at their rear ends by Specification of Letters Pa'tent.
lPatented J an. 11,, 1916.
serial ne. 12,640. 1
cross bars 17. Said forward cross bars are preferablyv double and embrace the rear ends of the beam C and are connected thereto by pivot bolts 18. The corners of each of the frames are also connected by pivot bolts 19, thus leaving thev frames free to open or close and to be adjusted to any Width desired Within the limit of the lengths of the' cross bars 16 and 17.
rl``he plous, or teeth, 20 are mounted on bars 14 and 15, or either one, by suitable retaining clerises in the usual manner. Said side bars 11 and 15 are provided With a series of wperforations, as shown, Whereby these tceth may be placed at any position thereon desired, or any number of teeth found a ppropriate may be attached thereto.
A plate is attached to each upright of the rear U-shaped member 11 of the frame and formed With a segmental slot, as shown. brace bar 23 is secured at its inner end by bolt 21 to said plate and at its other end by a clamping bolt 25 to the rear cross bar 17. Said bolt extends through a slot in said brace bar 28, and bolt 21 extends through the segmental slot in the plate 22. By this means the frames carrying the plou's may be adjusted as desired and rigidly locked or secured in any lateral adjustment. as Will Vbe readily understood. The bolts 2-1 and 25 are loosened and tightened to enable the adjustments being made so that the frames, together' with the plows, may be placed in that relation found to be Vof most advantage for the Worl: at hand.
Having thus fully described our said inrention, lwhat We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1` In a Walking' cultiyator, a plow carrying' frame composed of four bars piyoted together at their corners and piroted to the beams of the frame, and a, brace bar connected to the cultivator frame at one end and to the plow carrying frame atthe other with means for looking said bar and frame to secure said frame rigidly in adjusted position. substantially as set forth.
2. In a Walking cultiyator, the combination, of the cultiyator frame, plow carrying 3. A. walking eutvator, comprising a North Caro1ina',lthis Lth day of February, frame, plov carrylng frames connected 'A. D., nineteen hundred and fifteen. therewith each. of which is a perallelogram hnged at its corners, and means for lockng PxbkET -L v [[L'S'] 5 each plow carrying frame in certain adjustv i L'S'] able positons, substantially as set forth. Wvtnesses:
