In addition to a bodily movement of the jaws toward and from the shoe the jaw carrying levers are also oscillated about the fulcra to move the jaws toward and from one another. its rear end to a crank 15 of suitable length secured to one end of a continuously rotating drive shaft 16. The driving crank 15 serves the dual function of oscillating the lever at to move the jaw 1 toward and from the jaw 2 and of rocking the shaft 7 to impart a bodily in and out movement of both jaws with relation to the shoe. The lever 5 carrying the jaw 2 is oscillated by a rotary cam secured to the shaft 16 and provided with two peripheral cam surfaces 17 and 18 which are engaged respectively by the parallel guide faces 19 and 20 formed upon the bifurcated end of the lever 5. This construction forms a simple and eflicient mechanism for imparting the proper oscillatory movements to the lever 5 while permitting lengthwise movements of the lever relative to .the cam. A tack receiving chute is located beneath the jaws and it is desirable to release the tack and merely drop it into the receiving chute rather than to forcibly eject the tack from between the jaws. To this end the jaws are actuated in such a manner that the paths separate slightly after the tack has been engaged and substantially removed from the shoe and prior to the relative movement of the jaws to eject the tack. This releases the tack and permits it to be easily disengaged when the upper jaw is moved beyond the lower jaw. The paths in which the two aws move are clearly shown in Fig. l and the separation of the jaws is conveniently accomplished in the present construction by imparting a slight oscillatory movement to the lever 5 through the rotary actuating cam prior to the complete separation of the jaws. Each jaw has provision for adjustment in two directions with relation to the respective jaw carrying lever and to this end the jaw 1 is connected to the ends of the lever 4 through bolt and slot connections 21 and 22 and the jaw2 is connected to the lever 5 through bolt and slot connections 23 and 2 1.

In addition, a work support 28 engages with the shoe inside of the line of tacks and the two work supports 26 and 28 form throat 'the usual manner forguiding the tacks to the tack pulling jaws. The tack is positioned in the plane of the tack pulling movement by an abutment 27 extending transversely of the line of tacks in the usual manner. It is desirable that the work support 28 shall be positioned in close proximity to the path of movement of the tack pulling jaws and in order to avoid injury to the machine ifa jaw accidentally contacts with the work support the latter is arranged to yield outwardly away from the path of movement of the jaws. To this end the work support 28 is secured to a curved arm 30 pivoted upon the frame at 31 and extending outwardly and downwardly from the fulcrum, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The arm 30 is fulcrumed upon a head 32 having a face 33 which engages with the under side of the arm to limit the downward movement. The arm is normally depressed by a coil spring 35 surrounding a stud 36 upon which the arm is pivoted and connected at its opposite end to a pin 87 extending from the head 32, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The work support is adjustably connected to the lower end of the arm through a bolt and slot connection indicated at 10. This construction permits the work support to move outwardly away from the path of movement of the jaws and at the same time owing to the location of the fulcrum, imparts an upward movement to the work support. This feature is of decided advantage as the operator is enabled to vary the position of the work support by the upward pressure of the shoe. This movement of the work support simultaneously widens the tack guiding throat and permits the movement of the shoe bottom to ward the path of movement of the tack pulling jaws, the shoe pivoting about the outer work support 26 as the work support 28 is moved outwardly and upwardly.

A tack pulling machine, having in c0mbination, a pair of levers, a tack pulling jaw secured to the end of each lever, a rocker arm supporting both levers between their ends, a continuously rotated shaft, and connections between the shaft and the opposite ends of the levers for oscillating the rocker arm to move the jaws toward and from a shoe and for oscillating the levers about the rocker arm to move the jaws toward and from one another.

A tack pulling machine, having in combination, cooperating tack pulling jaws, a lever supporting each jaw, a rock shaft, a rocker arm projecting from the shaft and supporting the levers between their ends at different distances from the axis of the shaft, and mechanism for oscillating the levers about the rocker arm.

A tack pulling machine, having in combination, a pair of cooperating tack pulling jaws, a lever supporting each jaw, a rock shaft, a rocker arm projecting from the shaft and supporting the levers between the ends, a driving crank operatively connected to the end of one of the levers, and a rotary cam operatively connected to the end of the second lever.

A tack pulling machine, having in combination, a pair of levers, a tack pulling aw secured to the end of each lever, a rocker arm supporting both levers between their ends, a driving crank connected to the op: posite end of one of the levers for oscillating the lever about the rocker arm and for moving the lever in a lengthwise direction, and a rotary cam operatively connected to the second lever for oscillating the lever.

A tack pulling machine, having in combination, a pair of cooperating tack pulling jaws, and actuating mechanism constructed and arranged to first impart a movement of separation to the jaws during the tack pulling movement sufficient to relieve the pressure upon the tack and to next move the jaws relative to one another in the direction of the tack pulling movement after the pressure upon the tack has been relieved to disengage the tack from between the jaws.
7. A tack pulling machine, comprising, a tack pulling jaw, mechanism for actuating the jaw, a work support engaging with the upper of the shoe outside of the line of tacks,
, a second work support engaging with the shoe inside of the line of tacks, and means for permitting the second support to yield laterally away from the path of the tack pulling aw.

A tack pulling machine, comprising, a tack pulling jaw, mechanism for actuating the jaw to engage and pull a tack, cooperating work supports engaging upon opposite sides of the line of tacks, a fixed abutment extending transversely of the line of tacks, and mechanism for permitting one of the work supports to yield upwardly.
9. A tack pulling machine, comprising, a tack pulling jaw, mechanism for actuating the jaw to engage and pull a tack, and cooperating work supports engaging with the shoe upon opposite sides of the line of lasting tacks, one of the supports having provision for a yielding movement to simultane ously move the support upwardly and away from the path of the tack pulling jaw.
10. A tack pulling machine, comprising a combination, a pair of cooperating tack pulling jaws, and actuating mechanism constructed and arranged to first move the jaws to grip and pull the tack, to next move the jaws to relieve the pressure upon the tack, and to finally move the jaws to discharge the tack whereby the tack discharging movement of the jaws takes place after the pressure upon the tack has been relieved.
