Be it known that l, WESLEY C. GAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Augusta, in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod or Wire Panel Felices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rod or wire panel fences, more particularly, to those wire fences which are made up of unit portions embodyingone or more sections or panels which may be folded one upon the other, or each panel may be detached from the adjoining panel for shipment. As is the case with this construction, such fences are employed for a variety of purposes. They are used as regular division fences, or as side walls for animal, or poultry houses, and combination barbed wire and hog fences operating to turn swine as well as cattle.
The object of this invention is to produce a rod or wire detachable or folding panel fence of the character stated, the parts and details of which are of a certain special formation and arrangement, whereby it s believed a fence structure is made unusually cheap and strong and available for allfarm, dairy, garden and poultrygrowing purposes. l
To illustrate the construction and arrangement of the parts of this invention the accompanying drawings are provided. Of the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of one unit fashioned and erected in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the crosspieces having eyes at its ends. Fig. 3 is a side view of a hen house or pen for small stock, the construction of the wall shown being made in accordance with this invention. Considering the drawings, Fig. l shows a post driven into the ground, and an openwork wire or rod panel having crosspieces 2 provided at the ends with eyes 3 and 4p The eye 3 engages the post. The panels are completed by the vertical rods or wires 5, and the crosspieces and vertical pieces are welded together where they cross each other. It is not intended, however, to limit this invention to panels wherein the rods o1 wires are united by welding at their junctures, as any known manner of firmly connecting the wires may be adopted. Pins 6 and 7 passed through the post l below the upper crosspiece 2 and above the lower crosspiece, restrain the panel from displacement upwardly or downwardly.
Adjoining the panel just above described, and which in this explanation is termed the first panel, is the intermediate panel. It comprises the crosspieces such as the crosspiece 8, having hooks 9 and 10 at the ends, and it is shown that the hook 9 engages the end eye` 4: of the crosspiece 2 of the first panel.` The end hooks of the other crosspieces of the intermediate panel engage the eyes of the crosspieces of the first panel corresponding to the eye 4L of crosspiece 2. The vertical rods or wires 11 complete the intermediate panel, and the rods are welded at their crossings as previously explained.
At the right hand is shown the third panel having the crosspieces such. as the crosspiece 12, provided with the eyes 13 and 14 at the ends. The eye 13 engages the hook 10 of `the crosspiece of the intermediate panel, and the eye 14 engages the post 15.
`The other crosspieces of the third and intermediate panel are correspondingly engaged. `The vertical rods or wires such as the wire 16 complete the third panel. It will now be understood that what may be called a unit of fence construction made in accordance with this invention comprises three panels which maybe termed the first, third and intermediate panels.
Considering Fig. 2, which represents a hen house or the like, it will be noted that eye 23 engages the post 18.

Vertical rods or wires 32 complete the first panel shown in Fig. 2, and the crosspieces and vertical wires are welded at their crossings as before stated. The first panel is usually provided with a door 8,3. At the right'of the intermediate .panel is the post 84,:and neXt on the right is the third panel', having the double ' eyes 36 and 37, and the single end eye `88. The
. eye 36 engages the :hook 27 of the crosspiece 25 of the intermediate `paneleand the second eye 37 yengages the post 34. The -end or single eye 88 engages the post 39.
The-construction just .described may be covered 'with a corrugated metal roof 40,

Any number of fence units may be employed, the purpose of the V- shaped arrangement being to support tomato vines or the like planted between the outwardly inclined fences.
Fig. 9 illustrates a barbed wire cattle fence removably combined or associated with a hog 4fence arranged below it. At the left is shown the post 57. The barbs on the crosspiece 58 are marked 71, and the vertical rods or wires of the intermediate panel yare referred to by number 72.
The intermediate hog fence panel shown 1n Fig. 9 carries a topmost crosspiece 7 4, and
ithas the end hooks and 76, being in fact of the same uform. as the other intermediate panel crosspleces. The hook 75 engages the eye 66 of the crosspiece 64 of the first panel.
The intermediate panel of the hog fence is completed by the rods or wires 77.
The upper crosspiece of the third panel of thecattle fence portion shown in Fig. 9 is marked 78, and has the eyes 79 and 80. The eye 79 engages the hook 70.01": the crosspiece 68 of the intermediate panel. rlhe crosspiece 78 has the barbs 81, and the eye 80V of-,the crosspiece engages the post 82.
`The third paneljis completed by the vertical roads or wires such as the rod 83, and all the vertical rods are provided with hooks at their lower ends, such as the hook 84. Those hooks engage the upper crosspiece of the third panel of the hog fence portion shown in Fig. 9. This crosspiece has the end eyes 86 and 87. The eye 86 engages the hook 7 6 of the crosspiece 7 l of the intermediate panel of the hog fence, and the eye 87 engages the post 82. The third panel of the hog fence portion is completed by the vertical rods or wires 88.
As previously stated, the upper or cattle fence, the barbed portion, is removable from the hog fence or lower portion. The cattle fence is supported upon the posts 57 and 82 by the pins 89 and 90 passing through the posts. The hog fence portion is prevented from being displaced upwardly by the pins 91 and 92 passing through the posts 57 and 82 just above the end eyes 65 and 87, as set forth in Fig. 9.
rIhe operation of this invention is believed to be clearly discernible from the foregoing description. If the posts are withdrawn from the ground, the three panels may be folded one upon another, or detached and placed 'one upon another for transportation. In erecting the fence, by reason oi the construction set forth, there is no part but which is light enough to be easily and quickly handled and adjusted, and that is true equally if the rods are relatively thick-say one-fourth inch in diameter-where a strong fence is needed.
Having now explained this invention and described its purpose and the manner of using it, what I claim is 1; In a fence of the character described, the combination with posts, of first and third panels having cross-pieces provided with an eye at each end, each of the said crosspieces having its said eye engaging a post, an intermediate panel having crosspieces spaced correspondingly with the said cross-pieces of the Iirst and third panels, the said crosspieces of the iirst and third panels having coupling devices projecting from one set oi' said eyes which engage the posts at the end of the said crosspieces, and the ends of the cross-pieces of the said intermediate panel being provided with means for engaging the said coupling devices.
2. In a fence of the character described, the combination with posts, of first and third panels having crosspieces each provided wth a single eye at one end and a double eye at the other end, each crosspiece having its said single eye engaging a post, an intermediate panel having crosspieces provided with hooks at the ends engaging one of the said double eyes of the said crosspieces of the said first and third panels, and the remaining eyes of the said double eyes of the crosspieces engaging certain of the said posts.
