UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM I. COOLEY, or SALTVILLE, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR T0 WILLIAM R. awson, or I I 1 noanoxn, VIRGINIA.
HOLLOW-PISTON WAT R-VALVE.
Spec i fication of Letters Patent.
h pplication fil'ed March 1, 1917. Serial No. 151,841.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, W LLIAM L Coon'air, a.v citizen of the United States, residing at Saltville, in the county of Smyth and State of Virginia, have made a certain new and use- Valves, of which the following is a specification; p Figure lis a central longitudinal section of the valve casing and valve, the tubular valve member being moved downward to engage the other valve member.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the tubular valve member raisedfrom the other valve member.
Fig. 4 is a detail side view, partlyin section, of the hollow valve member, the stand pipe and the valve casing, parts being broken away.
The invention has relation to valves including a reciprocatory. hollowv sleeve or piston member, for use mainlyin supplying water to locomotive engines and fire hydrants, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, 4 designates the valve casing, having at one side an inlet 5 from the water main, said casing forming a support for the stand-pipe 2, the latter at its lower end revolubly mounted upon the valve casing at 2*.
Mounted within the casing a is a support 7, for a yie ldable valve member 8, said support being usually in the form of a plug,
fitting in an opening 9 in the bottom of the casing and suitably secured therein.
Thevalvemember 8 is preferably formed of soft rubber and is provided with a cylindri'cal base 10, fitting in a cylindrical seat 11 of the plug or support, and with an up wardly extending frusto-conical portion 12, having a flattop 13, and side walls of an inclination approaching the vertical. This member 8 is centrally perforated at 14, a leather washer 15 overlying the same and being also ofv frusto conical form, a metal washer 16 overlying the leather washer and being also of -frusto c'0nical form but of lesser diameter than theleather washer, a securing screw 17 engaging central perforations of the two washers, and the central perforations of the valve member 8 and of its support 7 the latter having an internal screw ful Invention in Hollow -Piston Water I thread. 'lhis screw has a rounded head 18, the side walls of. which merge into the conical side walls of the washer 16.
19 designates the hollow cylindrical or tubular valve member, having slidin move ment upwardly and downwardly within an opening 20, of the to of the valve casing, provided with a stu ng box 21, the lower end of said tubular member being of an internal diameter slightly less than the ex- Patented Aug. ,13, 1918.. V
ternal'diameter of the bottom of the frustoconical portion of the valve member 8, so
that in the downward movement of the tubular member, the side walls of the frusto conical member will be engaged thereby to close the valve and stopthe flow of water previous to or coincident with the engagement of the bottom of the tubular member with the top of the base of the other member. In this way. a wedging engagement of the tubular member with the yleldable valve 'member is accomplished over a comparaand the frusto-conical or tapered washers facilitate the'passage of the water into the stand pipe when the valve is open.
The tubular valve member 19 at its upper portion fits closely at 22 within the lower end of the stand pipe 2, having slidingmovement therein, and is provided at its upper end- 'with a cross-arm 23, the lower end of the operating rod 24 for the valve having connection with said cross-arm. y
It is designed to use a suitable relief valve 01' valves in connection with this device in orderto eliminate water hammer or vibration or to relieve undue pressureby the s'udden closing of the valve. Such relief valves would ordinarily be added to the valve casing, and for extraordinary pressure it may be desirable to place a reliefvalve in the inlet pipe.
I claim: I In a valve, a stationary base, a perforated fruste conical resilient member resting upon said base, a-perforated frnsto-qcnical washer, a bolt extending through the perforations of said resilient member and said. washer and securing the same to said base,-said bolt haV-.
ing an upper tapered head, and -a hollow reciprocat'ory cylindrical member of vrigid material havingan internal diameter less] than thediameter of the'lower end portion of said resilient member andgreater than I that of .theupperportion thereof, the resili ent member adapted to assume cylindrical form under engagement with the recipll'ocatory member to plug'the end of the latter into the reciprocatcry member when the 20 valve is'open. In testimony whereof I aflix my slgnature in presence of-two w tnesses.
WILLIAM I. GOOLEY.
