Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed May 14, 1917. Serial No. 168,524.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SYLvEsTEn G. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Malone, in the county of Greys Harbor and State of Washington, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Steam Washing-Machines; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,
specification. Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the covers thrown back.
Fig. 3 is a plan view with the covers thrown back.
The invention has relation to a washing machine wherein steam is used as a motive power for a rotary drum and asa cleansing agent for the clothes contained therein, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafterset forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the casing of the machine, one end 3 of which is preferably of cylindrical form; and mounted within the casing, at the cylindrical end thereof, is a rotary drum 4, trunnions 5 of in bearings of the side wallsof the casing. y
This rotary drum is composed preferably of circular or disk-form ends 6, connected by transverse radial blades 7, arranged in circular series, spaced apart from each other, peripherally around said ends, the outer edges of said blades working adjacent to the cylindrical end wall of the casing.
Projecting from the opposite end of the casing are steam pipes 8, usually horizontal and located near the bottom of the casing, said pipes having a unitary supply 9, branched and extended through the wall of the casing at this end thereof.
The steam discharged from thefree ends of the horizontal pipes impinges upon the radial blades flopiea or this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissionerof Patents,
ing closely against said end of the rotary drum and causes the drum to rotate and in rotating to agitate the clothes contained within the drum and cleanse the same, through the agency of the steam, penetrating freely between the blades of the drum to the clothes, the cylindrical end wall of the casing acting to confine the live steam closely within the drum.
The drum is provided with a cover 10, hinged at 11, and composed ofa certain number of the'radial blades of the drum, connected at the ends by arc-form strips 12, said strips fitting in arcuate peripheral notches 14 of the drum ends. Upon lifting this cover the clothes maybe inserted in position within or removed from the drum.
the spaces between the radial peripheral blades being comparatively narrow, so that the clothes will not escape therefrom.
The casing is also provided with a hinged cover 15, latched at its free end at 16 to an upward transverse extension ,17 of the casing, said extension forming a steam chamber from whichthe exhaust is 0011-.
ducted at one end at 18.
In use, the cover 15 of the casing is first thrown back, after which the drum is turned around sufiiciently to bring its site or adjacent to the hinges of the casing cover, when the drum'cover may be thrown back upon the casing cover, the hinges of the drum cover admitting of tension to allow this.
A drain pipefor the casing is shown at 19. I
I claim:
In a washing machine. a casing having a semi-cylindrical end wall, a rotary cylindrical perforated drum in said casing Workhavlng circular ends and radial blades connectlng said ends together. said blades extending inwardly from the perlpheries of hinges opposo sufficient exwall. said drum l said ends, and steam pipes located in said casing and directed toward said drum and said end wall of the casing. i In testimony whereof I in presence of two Witnesses.
