CLEAN-OUT. APPLICATION HLED-SEPLZI. 1917.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918. I
7 1 WITNESSES TTOR/VEVS UNITED STATES PATENT orrioi 'rmx scnon, or TRENTONf, NEW JERSEY.
invites.
State of New Jersey, have invented a neW' and Improved Clean-Out, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to sanitary apparatus such as water closets, sinks, urinals, traps and the like. 7 I
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved clean-out or manhole for apparatus such as described, and arranged to prevent the escape of foul odors or noxious gases or liquids by way of the cleanout into the room in which the apparatus is located.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a water jacket surrounding the clean-out opening and open to the inner face of the cover, the said water jacket being connected with a water supply and having an outlet leading into the bowl or other part of the apparatus.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of thisspecification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all 'the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation ofthe clean-out shown applied to the bowl of a water closet, the section being on the 11116 1-1 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 2 is a face view of the same with the cover removed and the inlet and outlet chambers shown in section; and
Fig. 3 is a face view of the inner end of tha, manhole.-
The improved clean-out is shown applied to the bowl 10 of a water closet and which bowl is provided with the usual flushing rim 11 and the water seal 12 at the outlet. In the wall portion 13 of the bowl at the water seal 12 is arranged an opening 14 through which access is had to the interior of the water seal for repairs or other purposes, and the outer end of this opening 14 is normally closed by a cover 15.
In order to prevent any }gases or liquids from leaking past the joints etween the face of the wall 13 and the cover 15, use is made of a water seal in the form of an annular water jacket 16 formed in the wall 13 and.
.surrounding the opening 14. The water jacket 16 is open to the inner face of the cover 15- and is connected near the top the water jacket 16 is CLEAN-OUT.
Patented Aug. 13", 1918.
Application filed Septemb'er 21,1917. Serial No. 182,575.
a water inlet chamber 18 formed in the wall of the bowl and opening at its upper end into the flushing rim 11 so that water assing throu h the latter can pass into the c amber 18 and from the latter by way of the port 17 into the water jacket 16 to fill the same. The upper portion of connected by an outlet port 20 with an outlet chamber 21 formed in the wall of the bowl'adjacent the chamber 18, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The outlet -chamber 21'is provided with a .port 22 opening into the bowl 10 a distance below the flushing rim 11 so that the water passing into the water jacket 16 can circulate through the same and ass out through the ort 20 into the cham er 21 and from'the atter by way of the port 22 into the bowl 10. Thus by the arrangement described fresh water is circulated throu h the water jacket 16 every time the bowl is flushed by water from the rim 11.
The inner face of the cover 15 is provided by a port 17 with with an annular rib 25 which projects centrally into the water jacket 16 to allow the water to circulate around the rib thus providing a large sealing surface to prevent the escape of gases and liquid by way of the joint between the cover 15 and the outer face of the wall 13. A gasket 26 of ruib ber or other suitable material is interposed between the joint of the cover 15 and the outer'face of the wall 13, and the inner face of the cover 15,is provided with short annular ribs 27 located on oppreferably posite sides of the ribs 25 and. serving to press the gasket 26 into annular recesses 28 formed in the outer face of the wall 13.
In order to fasten the cover 15 in position use is preferably'made of a screw 30 which screws in the shank or hub 31 of an arm 32 adapted to pass through grooves 33 formed in the wall of the opening 14 and extending from the outer end of the opening to the inner end thereof. The ends of the arm 32 are adapted to be passed into grooves 34 formed in thewall of the opening 14 at a right angle to the grooves 33 so that after. the arm 32 has been passed inward in the grooves 33 and is then turned to engage the grooves 34 then the arm is is provided which surrounds the opening 14 and is open to the inner face of the cover- 15 to prevent the escape of obnoxious odors, gases, or liquids from the outlet end of the bowl of the water closet.
It will also be noticed that the manhole cover 15 can be securely fastened in position or readily removed whenever it is desired to do so for cleaning out purposes.- As fresh air is circulated through the Water jacket at each flushing operation of the bowl it is evident that sediment and the like is not liableto accumulate in the water jacket and the latter is keptfclean and sweet.
Having thus described'my invention, I
. claim as new and desire to secure by Let- Y ters Patent 2- A clean-out for water closet bowls having an opening in the wallof the bowl at the water seal thereof, a cover closing the said opening, an annular water 'acket formed in the said wall and surroun ing the wall of the said opening, the water jacket being open to the inner face of the said cover, a water inlet chamber formed in the said wall above the water jacket, the upper end of the said inlet chanrber connecting with the flush. ing rim of the bowl, a port connecting the bottom of the said water inlet chamber with the top of the said Water jacket, an outlet chamber formed in the said wall adjacent the said inlet chamber, a port connecting the top of the said water jacket with the bottom of the said outlet chamber, and a port connecting the said outlet chamber with the interior of the bowl and located above the port connecting the outlet chamber and the water jacket.
