To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. Pnrronann, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Power Ramming-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in power tamping machines, and has for its primary object to provide a tamping machine more particularly adapted for setting paving blocks in street building operations.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is, self propelled.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the tamping elements are movable transversely of the machine to engage the paving blocks at a diflerent point on each stroke of the tamping elements.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which any number of the tamping elements may be retained out of operative connection with the tamper operating mechanism.
A further object of the invention is to provide means by which a device of this character may be propelled either forwardly or rearwardly withoutinterferring with the operation of the tampers.

eferring more particularly to the drawings, the device .comprises a substantially rectangular frame formed of the side members 50, the rear ends of which are connected by a curved member 51. Extending transversely of the rectangulanframe are braces 52, 53, and 54, the brace 52 having its ends curved as at 55 to conform to the shape of the curved member 51, said curved ends being secured to the member 51 by bolts or the like 56, and secured to the side members 50 by bolts 57. Extending rearwardly from the member 52 and connected at one end thereof by the bolt 58 and at its other-end to the curved member 51 by the bolt 59 is abrace 60 in which is pivotally mounted a pair of steering wheels 61. These steering wheels are of the caster type and the upper end of the shaft on which they are mounted is provided with a bevel gear 62. Extending at right angles to the brace 60 is a brace 63, the outer end of which is connected to the curved member by the bolt 64, and secured to said brace is a substantially L-shaped bracket within the legs of which is mounteda shaft 66, one end of which carries a bevel gear 67 and the other end carries a bevel gear 68. The bevel gear 67 meshes with the bevel gear 62, and mounted shaped mem of which carries a bevel gear 7 O which meshes I with the bevel gear. 68, and rigidly secured to the upper end of the shaft 69 is a hand wheel 71. It will be seen that'u on rotation of the hand wheel the shaft 6 is rotated thus moving the caster wheels about, their pivot to form a steering mechanism for the machine.
Extending transversely of the frame is a shaft 72 on eachend of which is'mounted a traction wheel 73, and rigidly secured to each of said traction wheels is a sprocket 74. Mounted between this shaft 72 and the rear of the frame is a drive shaft 75 near each end of'which is mounted-a sprocket 76,.and
passing over each of said sprockets and over I the sprockets, 74 is a drive chain 77.
Loosely mounted on the drive shaft7 5 near the center thereof are gear wheels 78 and 79, the gear wheel 78 being smaller in diameter than the gear wheel 79, and keyed to the shaft between the gear wheels 78 and 79 is a clutch collar 80 which is adapted to be engaged alternately with the gear wheels 78 and 79 I said shaft 82 by means of the link 83 is an operating lever 84 which is pivoted as at 85 to the segment 86 which through the medium of the latch 87 maintains the clutch member engaged with either of the gears 78 or 79 or in the neutral position as desired.
This clutch lever shaft is slidably mounted in the base of a framework 88 which is supported on the transverse braces '52 and 53 and is secured thereto by means of bolts or the like 89. This frame comprises two side members 90 which are connected at the top by means of transversely extending braces 91 and 92 which have their ends bent at right angles as at 93 and are secured to the side members 90 by means of bolts 94.
Extending longitudinally of this framework, and journaled inflthe transverse braces 91 and 92 is a shaft 95, and keyed thereto is a worm gear 96 which meshes with a gear 97 on the shaft 98'which shaft is journaled in the side members of the frame and has one of its ends projected beyond the frame as at 99 to which a beveled gear 100 is keyed. Journaled as at 102' to one of the side members of the frame is a gear wheel 103- which meshes with a gear wheel 101 which in turn is keyed t0 the shaft 98. Also keyed to the shaft 98 is a gear wheel 104, and these gear wheels 103 and 104 are adapted to mesh with the gear wheels 79 and 78 respectively, which are adapted to be selectively clutched {o tlsig shaft 75 by means of theclutch col- As shown in Figs 4 and'5, a power unit 105 is employed, and carried by the crank shaft 106 of said power unit isagear wheel 107 which meshes with a gear" wheel 108 journaled in the bracket 109 carried by the frame 88.
' The shaft 95 projects rearwardly of the frame 88 and has secured'thereto on the exterior of said frame, a gear wheel 110 and serves as the means by which the shaft 95 is rotated by the power unit 105.
'Journaled on the inner face of one of the side members 90 of the frame 88 is a gear 126 meshes. its ends in the transversely extending braces wheel 111 which meshes with a gear wheel ber 117 by means of which the clutch mem- I ber 115 is moved longitudinally of the shaft 113 for connecting and disconnecing the sprocket wheel 114 with said shaft. Connected to this bar 116 as at 118 is a hand lever 119 which is pivoted as at 120 to a bracket 121 secured to one of the side members 90 of the frame 88, the handle portion of said lever 119 passing through an aren ate guide 122, Thus it will be seen that by rocking the lever 119 upon its pivot 120 the clutch member 115 is engaged or disengaged with the sprocket 114 as desired.
Mounted on the transversely extending members .53 is a bracket 123 the upper end of which is provided with a journal bar, and mounted in said journal bar 124 is a shaft upon one end of which is secured the beveled gear gear 100 and is adapted to be driven thereby. On the other end of this shaft is secured a gear 126, and carried by a shaft 127 is the gear wheel 128 with which the gear wheel This shaft 127 is supported by 53 and 54, and as best shown in Fig. 7 said shaft carries a cam member 129. Surrounding this cam member 129 is a strap 130 the forward end of which is rigidly connected to an arm 131 in such a'manner that as the shaft 127 is rotated, the arm 131 is given a reciprocating movement in a direction trans-' versely of the frame of the machine. v
On the forward face of the transversely extendin brace 53 is a guide member 132,
and slida ly mounted in said guide member 132 is a rack block 133 which is pivotally connected as at 134 to the arm 131. The upper edge of this block 133 is provided with a plurality of rack teeth 135 which mesh with a gear wheel 136-.on a shaft 137 the ends of-which are supported in'blocks car ried by the transversely extending braces 53 and 54. The forward end of, this shaft 137 is provided with a gear wheel 138 the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
As shown in Fig. 1, the forward portion of the frame is offset as at 140 and its upper edge is flattened as at 141 to provide bearings for a tamper frame 142 which comprises. vertical standards 143 and 144 which are connected by upper and lower transversely extending members 145 and 146 respectively, and the bottom transversely extending member 146 is provided with a rack 125 which meshes with the beveled I adapted to mesh. It will thus be seen that as the camv member 129 is rotated through the medium of the shaft 127, this tamper frame will be reciprocated transversely of the machine through the medium of the rack block 135, gear 136, shaft 137, and the gear 138 which as before stated meshes with the rack bar 147.
To guide this tamper frame in its movement, transversely of the main frame the same is provided with a guide bar 148, and secured to the top of the frame member 88 are upwardly and forwardly projecting arms 149 the free end of each of which is bifurcated as at 150, and mounted in the bifurcated ends of said arms are rollers 151 between which the guide member 148 is adapted to move.
This tamper frame is provided with a transversely extending shaft 152, and keyed to said shaft in alinement with the sprocket wheel 114 is a sprocket wheel 153, which latter is prevented from moving longitudinally of the shaft 152 by means of spaced guides 154; which are secured to the frame 88. Passing around the sprocket wheels 114 and 153 is -a driving chain 155 through the medium of which the shaft 152 is rotated. Rotatably mounted in the tamper frame above the shaft 152 is a shaft 156 on which a plurality of cams 157 are mounted in such a manner that as the shaft 156 is rotated,
the cams 157 are likewise rotated for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
The bottom transverse member 146 of the tamper frame is provided with rearwardly projecting brackets 158 in which are mounted the rollers 159 which latter engage the front face of the transversely extending members 54 to aid in guiding the tamper frame in its'transverse movement.
As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 152 projects through one of the vertical members of the tamper frame and has keyed thereto a gear wheel 159 which in turn meshes with a gear wheel 160 carried by the cam shaft 156 the other end of said cam shaft being-provided with a balancing wheel 161.
Mounted for vertical movement in the tamper frame are tamping elements 162 which are provided throughout a portion of their length with a slot 163, and mounted in said slot is a roller 164 with which one of the cam members 157 is adapted to engage for the purpose of elevating the tamping member.
As shown in Fig. 9, thesetamping members are preferably square in cross section and are movable vertically between the guide members 165 upon rotation of the cam shaft 156. The lower end of each of these tampmg members is reduced as at 167 and is provided with a recess 168 within which is removably secured a tamping head 169, said tamping head,169 being secured within absorbing spring 172 which is also adapted to elevate the tamping member when the same is not engaged by its respective cam so that its tamping head 169 is out of engagement with the material which is being operated upon by the machine.
As shown in Fig. 8, the slot in each of the tamping members extends slightly above the top member 147 of the tamper frame, and positioned on the upper face of the said top member 147 in alinement with the slot in each of the tamping members is a dog or pawl 172. This dog or pawl 172 is mounted in a bracket 173 and projecting therefrom is an arm 174 which is provided with an aperture 175 through-which a rod 176 is passed, the lower end of said rod being secured to the pawl or dog 172. Surrounding this rod 176 between the arm 174 and the pawl or dog 172 is a coil spring 177. The pawl or dog 172 is carried by a cam 178 which in turn is rigidly secured to a shaft 179 one end of which is provided with an operating lever 180 by means of which the cam 178 is rocked. The dog or pawl 172 is provided with a rearwardly and upwardly extending operating lever 181, and by pulling downwardly on said operating lever 181 the dog or pawl 172 is rocked about the cam member 17 8. By rocking the cam '17 8 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 8, it will be seen that the nose of the dog or pawl 172 is moved forwardly into the slot of the tamping member, and if the operating lever 181 be rocked about the cam the pawl or dog is moved about the cam to elevate the tamping member to a point whereits respective cam member will not engage the roller carried thereby thus rendering the tamping member inoperative. The operating lever 181 is retained in its lowest position to maintain' the tamping element out of operation by means of a latch member 182. It is to be understood that a mechanism such as described above is provided for each of the tamping elements so that any one of said tamping elementsmay be retained in its inoperative position;
This tamper frame is supported by means of rollers 183 mounted in the brackets 184 which engage in track 185 and which extend transversely of the machine, and the said tamper frame is maintained in position by means of a plate 186 which is secured to the ends of the side members of the frame by means of brackets orthe like 187, and projecting upwardly from said plate 186 are arms 188 the upper end of each of which is bifurcated as at 189 and mounted'between the furcations of said bifurcated end is a roller 190. The front face of the tamper frame is also provided with rollers 191 which 105 is transmitted by means of the gears 107,
108, and. 110 to the worm gear 96 through the medium of the shaft 95 and through the medium of the gears 101, 103, the gear wheel 79 carried on the main shaft is rotated, and through the medium of the gear 104, the gear 78 carried by the main shaft 75 is rotated. If now the clutch collar 80 be moved to operatively connect either of the gear wheels 78 and 79 to the shaft 7 5 the machine will be moved either forwardly or rearwardly' depending on the gear wheel operatively connected with the shaft. If now the clutch member 115 be operated to connect the sprocket wheel 114 with the shaft 113 it will be seen that through the medium of the chain 155, sprocket 153, shaft 152, and the gear wheels 159 and 160 the cam shaft 156 will be rotated so that each cam 157 will engage the roller 164 of its respective tamping member, thus elevating said tamping member, and as the cam member rotates it disengages the roller 164 and permits the tamping member to drop under its own Weight thus permitting its tamping roller 169 to engage the material on which the machine is operated. In the meantime, throggh the medium of the shaft 98, beveled gear 100, and the beveled gear 125, the gear 126 is rotated thus driving the shaft 127 and the cam member 129 which'in turn reciprocatesthe arm 131 and the rack block 135 to drive the gear 136, shaft 137 and gear 138 to move the tamper frame transversely-jof the main frame so that the tamping heads 169 will engage thematerial being operated upon at different points.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is: I
1. 'device of the character described comprising a main frame, a tamper frame movable transversely of the main frame, a
driving means for the main frame, means operated by the driving means for moving the tamper frame transversely of the main frame, a plurality of reciprocating tampers carried by the tamper frame, and means operated by the said driving means for reciprocating the tampers in the tamper frame.
2. A device of the character described,-
comprising a main frame, a tamper frame supported on and 'movable transversely of said main frame, a plurality of vertically arranged reciprocating tampers in the tamper frame, a rack fixed to the tamper frame,
a rack gearmeshing with the rack to move eccentric for driving the same.

A device of the character described comprising a main frame, wheels movably supporting the main frame, a tamper frame supper ued on and movable transversely of said main frame, a plurality of reciprocating tampers carried by the tamper frame, a rack fixed to the tamper frame, a rack gear rotatably supported on the main frame and meshing'with said rack, a movable rack on the main frame, a pinion meshing with the movable rack and connected with the gear, an eccentric having connection with the movable rack, mechanism for actuating the tampers and having connection with the described,
eccentric for driving the same, and means for controlling said mechanism to render all of the tampers inactive or to hold the tamper frame passive.
5. A device of the character described comprising a main frame, Wheels movably supporting the main frame, a tamper frame pinion meshing with the movable rack and connected with the gear, an eccentric having connection with the movable rack, mechanism for actuating the tampers and having connection with the eccentric for driving the same, means for controlling said mechanism to rend r all of the tampers inactive or to hold t e tamper frame passive, and connections between certain of the wheels and said mechanism for driving said wheels.
