SWING.
Specification of letters Patent.
Patented Au 13, 1918.
Application filed April 10, 1918. Serial No. 227,659.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LETHEL R. PITTI, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Boyd, in the county of Carbon and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swings, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to swings and more particularly to childrens swings, my object being the provision of a simple, inexpensive and attractive childs swing, which may be readily taken apart for 1 storage purposes and 1f deslred, readily dismantled whereby its detached parts may be packed within minimum space.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating my present invention,
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly broken away in its section,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to these figures, my invention contemplates the provision of a rigid hanger 10 which in use is secured in any suitable manner as for instance by screws 11, bolts, or the like, to an overhead support of any nature, generally indicated at 12 in Figs. 1 and 2, the hanger 10 being of any suitable construction although preferably of the same, or practically the same, transverse dimensions as those of the upper portions of the depending swing bar 13, hinged at its upper end to the lower end of the hanger 10 to swing freely with respect thereto and in relatively opposite directions. 1
The connection between the swing bar 13 and its hanger 10 is preferably accomplished by recessing or bifurcating the lower end of the hanger 10 to receive in the recess or bifurcation an extension 1.41 at the upper end of the swing bar 13, and by passinga pivot bolt 15 through the bifurcated lower portion of the hanger 10 and the extension 14: of the swing bar 13.
At its lower end the swing bar 13 is reduced and provided at one side with vertically spaced bearing brackets 16 arranged to receive one extension of an angular seat iron 17, the other extension of which is secured to the lower surface of the seat 18 located at one side of the reduced lower bracket 16, and in this way portion 19 of the swing bar and at the relatively opposite side to that of the upright 20 having a hand wheel 21 at its upper end and having an angular extension 22 at its lower end projecting at right angles with respect to the swing bar and away from the same and having at its outer end oppositely extending angular projections 23 forming foot rests.
It .will be noted by reference to Fig. 1 in particular that the upright 20 may have short laterally projecting ears secured by screws or the like to the lower reduced portion 19 of the swing bar so as to adapt this upright with its foot rest and its hand wheel 21 to ready removal from the swing bar, the latter of which is detachable from its hanger 10 by simply removing the transverse pivot bolt15. The seat 18 and its rail, are ready removable by simply withdrawing the vertical extension of the seat iron 17 from the the swing may be readily dismantled for storage, repair or substitution of parts. i
It is also obvious by reference to Fig. 1 that the seat 18 is considerably wider than the lower reduced portion 19 of the swing bar 13 so that the limbs of the user straddle this reduced portion 19 in order that the feet may be placed upon the rests 23.
It is furthermore obvious that its various features will be extremely attractive to children in addition to their practical advantages above mentioned.
1. A swing consisting of a normally vertical rigid swing bar pivotally mounted at its upper end to swing in opposite directions, a seat frame connected to the lower end of the swing bar at one side and normally disposed in horizontal position, and an upright secured to the opposite side of the lower end of the swing bar and having a lower angular extension provided with laterally projecting foot rests offset from the swing bar.
- 2. A swing comprising a normally vertione extension of which is engageable with rests, and having an upper hand wheel, all the bearing brackets to normally support the for the purpose described. seat in connection with the swin ar, and w 1 an upright detaehably connected to the op- ETHEL 1 1111' 5 posite side of the swing bar adjacent its Witnesses:
lower end, having a lower angular extension M. L. CH MBERLAIN, provided With laterally projecting foot H. C. PROVINSE.
