Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug, 13, 1918.
Application filed October 9, 1917. Serial No. 195,588.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN PXKYLE,
citizen of the United States, residing at Aredale, in the county of Butler and State of Iowa have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat Attachments; and I do hereb declare the following to be a full,
clear anc exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful seat attachment for use in connection with farming implements and particularly cultivators.
The principal object of the invention. is to provide a seat attachment of this character embodying adjustable cushioning means for the seat to afford case and comfort to the rider durlng the travel of the farmlng machlne over the ground.
A further object of the invention is to provide reliable and durable seat attachment of simple and inexpensive construction.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention comprises the various novel features of construction, combination and a1?- ran ement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter and afterward specifically claimed.
Referring to the drawing: 1
Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved seat attachment,
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the attachment, and
Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view taken on a plane indicated by the line 3-3 on Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference are used to denote like parts throughout the following description and the accompanying drawlugs.
In order that the construction and operation of the invention may be readily understood, I have illustrated an approved embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings and will now proceed to fully describe the same in connection. with said drawings,
in which 1 indicates a pair of spaced flat bars which converge rearwardly for the major portion of their length. The forward ends; are each provided with an aperture 2 for the reception of bolts or other suitable fastening means to secure the attachment to some convenient intermediate part of the cultivator or other farming machine as the case may be. 1 y 3 designates a pair of angle iron bars which have their rear ends arranged in spaced parallel relation and connected by bolts 4:. Separator washers 5 are mounted on the bolts 4- between the bars, the forward ends of the bars diverge forwardly in between and in juxtaposition to the bars 1.
The bars 1 are pivotally connected to the vertical flanges 6 of the bars 3 at points removed from the forward ends of the latter by bolts 7, said bars 1 being arranged beneath the horizontal flanges 8 and spaced from the flanges 6 by washers 9.
The bars 1 and 3 are connected by adjustable cushioning means, each of which consists of a hook rod 10, the shank of which extends vertically through the flange 8 between the fiange 6 and the bar 1, while the hook 11 carried by the lower end engages and receives the bar 1. A nut 12 is mounted "on the upper end of the hook rod and provides means for varying the tension of a cushion spring 13 carried by the rod.
A seat 14 is detachably connected to the tioned it will be noted that the bars 3 can freely reckon their pivots under the weight of a person n the seat against the tenslon of the cushion sprlngs. The tenslon of the cushion springs can be readily varied to compensate forpersons of varying weight,
by adjusting the nuts-12.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, is: p
A seat attachment comprising a pair of spaced bars, another pair of bars pivoted at points removed from the1r forward ends to said first bars, a hook rod having its shank extending through each of the forward ends of said secondbars and its lower hook end engaging the adjacent first bar, an adjusting name to this specification in the presence of nut carried by the upper end of each C111001: two subscribing witnesses. rod, a cushion spring on each hook r0 bew tween said adjusting nut and second bar; and JOHN KYLIJ' 5' a seat carried by the rear ends of said second Witnesses:
bars. W. PELL,
In testimony whereof I have signed my L. LL BUQKMASTER.
