To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that l, THoMAs a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Motor-Vehicle- ]Door Holders, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to carriage door latches and particularly to latches for use on motor vehicle doors.
-- The object of this invention is to provlde a latch for carriage doors which is so constructed that the door willbe firmly held in a closed position and prevented from rattling when latched in the closedposition. A further object of the invention is to pro- -vide a latch for carriage doors which may be very easily and economically constructed, the principal parts of the latch being stamped from sheet metal.
Further objects, and objects relating to economies of manufacture and details of construction will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
l accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices andmeans described in the following specification. My invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the ap pended claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation with parts broken away of a motor vehicle body in which the device is incorporated;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the two members of the latch about to swing into cooperative relation;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the latch member removed from the door;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the keeper member; and j Fi 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view showlng the tapered wedge shaped projection of the keeper member locked in en agement with the wedge sha ed recess 0 the latch member by means 0 the latch bolt.
The motor vehicle body 1 is provided with i the door jamb 2 and the door 3. Throu h the door 3 extends the bar 4- rockable by t e handles 5; or 6. The latch member comprises a face plate ll, the upper end -of which is bent back at right angles at 10, to form a guide for the upper end of the latch bolt 9. The lower end 12 of the face plate extends in a plane parallel to the upper end 11 and between the portions 11 l2the moron-vnnronanoon nomm Patented Aug. 13,1918.
- plate is struck in to form a tapered recess J. KEHon,
having lower and upper converging walls 13 and 15 and a rear wall 14;, the edge of the door being recessed to accommodate these parts of the latch member. The upper wall of the tapered recess thus formed has the flanges 16, 17 and 18 struck up therefrom to form guides for the'head 19 of the latch bolt 9, the upper end of said latch bolt being guided inflange 10 as hereinbefore described. An arm 7 is rigidly carried out and extends from the rock bar 4, the other end of saidarm being forked and engaging the reduced portion 8 of the latch bolt 9 above the guiding flange 10 so that the rocking of the bar 4: will reciprocate the latch bolt. A spring 20 is disposed on the latch bolt 9 between-the head thereof and the guide 10 and serves to hold the bolt normally projected. The keeper member is secured to the door jamb 2 in position to cooperate with the latch and comprises the upper and lower portions 21 and 22 which are parallel with each otheriand adapted to be secured to the edge of the door j amb, the plate forming the keeper member being struck out between these upper and lower portions to form a taperedor wedge shaped projection having lower and upper converging walls 23 and 25 and a front wall 24, the taper of such wedge shaped projection corresponding to the wedge shaped or tapered recess formed in the face plate of the latch member, so that when the door is closed, said recess engages the said projection snugly. A notch 26 is provided in the upper wall 25 of the keeper member, in position to. be engaged by the head 19 ot the latch bolt to hold the members in latching engagement. The latch head 19 of the plunger may-be manually withdrawn by rocking a handle tea clined wall 25 ofthe keeper member engages the head 19 or the latchbolt and lpresses back the same against the tension of t e spring 20 until the cor is tightly closed, when the tapered projection of the keeper member is in snug engagement with the walls of the tapered recess or the latch member, and,
' 23 and 25 engage the walls 13 and 15 and the action of the spring upon the latch bolt tends to hold these surfaces in such engagement, with the result that vibration and rattling is effectively prevented by the use .of-this form of latch. It will also appear that this latch is very simple, being composed of a few number of parts, and is of V such a nature that it may be very easily constructed at a low cost, while at the same time it is especially efficient in operation.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a carriage door latch, the combination of a face plate having an inturned flange at its upper end, and having the Gentral portion thereof struck in to form a wedge shaped recess, guide flanges struck up from the upper wall of said recess, a latch bolt moving parallel to said face plate with its upper end guided in said upper flange and its head projecting through the upper wall of said recess and guided by the flanges thereon, means for reciprocating said latch bolt, and a keeper member. adapted to be secured to the door jamb and having its 0811- tral portion struck out to-form a tapered projection adapted to fit into the tapered recessof said face plate,- the upper wall of said projection being provided with a notch adapted to be engaged by the head of said latch bolt. v
2. In acarriage door latch, the combination ofa face plate having a tapering recess,
a latch bolt. carried by said faceplate said tapering recess, the upper wall of said projection being provided with a notch adapted to be engagedby the head of said latch bolt. V
3. In a carriage door latch, the combination of a face plate having a recess tapering transversely thereof, a keeper member haw ing a projection tapering transversely thereof and shaped to fit snugly in said tapering recess, a latch bolt carried by said face plate and movable parallel thereto into and out of engagement with said projection on the keeper member. 7 V
'4. In a carriage door latch, the combina tion of a keeper member adapted to be secured to the door jamb and provided with a projection having upper and lower convergmg walls, a plate adapted to be securedto the edge of the door and provided with arecess having upper and lower converging walls, said projection being adapted to snugly engage in said recess, the upper end of said plate being inturned, a latch bolt slidably mounted in said inturned portion of the latch plate and having its head extending through and guided by the upper wall of said recess,
the upper wall of said projection being provided with a notch engageable by the head of said latch bolt, a spring on 'said latch bolt disposed between the head thereof and the inturned portion of said latch plate, a
rock bar extending transversely through said door, anarm rigidly secured to said rock bar and provided with a forked end engaging the upper end of said latch bolt, and means for osclllating said rock bar.
