Be it known that I, ROBERT R. Huenns, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser- Feet for Sewing-Machines, of which the, following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to, the figures of reference marked thereon.
, The inventionxrelates to new and useful improvements in a presser foot for sewing machines, and more particularly to a presser foot which is adapted to guide a strip which is to be stitched to a fabric.
It is often desirableto fold the edges of a bias strip and to stitch the same to a garment. These strips are stitched at each edge and often have very sharp curves, especially when applied to belts, cuifs and collars, and
the like. An object of the present invention is to provide a presser foot which will guide and hold a bias strip with its edges folded as it is being stitched and while turning curves so that a line of stitching may be inserted in proper relation to each foldededge- A further object of the invention is to i provide a presser foot of the above characterwith means for turning in and folding the edges of the bias strip.
These and other ob ects will in part be obvious and will in part behereinafter more fully disclosed. v

The fabric strip, as shown in Fig. 5, is folded so that the edges of the strip are carried around underneath the body portion of the strip. This strip is preferably made of a bias fabric so that thestrip may be readily applied to sharp curvesin the garment to 1 which it is to be attached. The'iliWO needle openings 10 and 11 are set in a line especially adapted to be used in connection with a chain stitch sewing'machine wherein two independent lines of stitches are produced. The'groove 9 terminates directly in rear ofthe rearmostneedle opening 11. The extension its provided ,withthe supporting block 12 to which is attached a yieldingplate 13 by3means of a suitable screw 14. This plate 13 extends underneath the presser foot and terminates substantially at theend of the groove '9. "The yielding" plate '13 is of substantially the same width as the groove '9 although there is enough clearance to per mit this plate to yield freely in the groove. Thep'late is cut away at 15 .to permit the needl eit'o freely passthrough the opening 10 and' is also cut away at 16 to permit the needle operating in theopening 11 to pass by said plate. The purpose ofthis yielding plate is to hold the folded strip well seated in the groove in the under face of the presserfootuntilthe stitches are formed.
Cooperating with this presser foot is a throat plate 17 having feedslots 18 therein, a central feed slot extends forward between the needle openings 19 and 20 formed in the throat plate, feed dog 21' has a forwardly projecting centrahportionQQ which works in thiscentral slot and this engages the .fabric Fto which the strip isto be stitched; The

Inasmuch as the groovein the presser foot terminates directly in'rear of the needles, the
ipresser foot is especially adapted for guiding a foldedubias strip sothat it may be stitched around sharp curves, as indicated at Fig. 3. A- great deal of trouble has been experienced in stitching folded strips around .sharp curves.- -Heretofore, the attaching of these strips-has beenv doneon asingle needle anachinerequiring two operations. With my improved presser foot,-how ever,,the strip is -laidperfectly; flat and; smooth and a .line of stitching passed through thestrip both at the inside and theoutside edges thereof and even when stitching curves. This is accomplished by aid of the groove in the bottom of the presser foot, together with the steel spring -or yielding plate which holds the folded strip in said groove. This spring fits close to ,both needles and, therefore, holds'the foldcdstrip tightly in the groove of the foot untilit is stitched and prevents it running off the inside of the curve or wideni ing at the outside of the curve. ,diagonalto the line of feed and the foot is It is obvious that minor changes in thedetails of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is .1. A ,presser foot for sewing machines comprising a foot portiouhaving a groove in its under face and needle openings extending through thefoot portion into said groove, said needle. openings being located adjacent the side edges of the groove, and a yielding member carried by said foot and adapted to engage a folded strip in rear of each needle, whereby said folded stripis held in the groove until stitched.
2. A presser foot for sewing machines comprising a foot portion having a groove in its under face and needlo openings extending through the foot portion into said groove, said needle openings being located adjacent the'side edges ofjthe groove, and a yieldingv member carried by said foot and adapted to engage a folded strip in rear of each needle, whereby said folded strip is held in the groove until stitched, said groove in.the under face of said foot tern'linating at a point directly in rear of the needles whereby saidfolded' strip may be stitched in a sharp curve. 7

A presser foot for sewing machines comprising a foot portion having a groove in its under face, needle'openings arranged in a line diagonal to the line of feed and extending through the foot portion into said groove adjacent the respective side edges thereof, a yielding: plate carried by the presser foot at the forward end thereof and extending underneath the same to a point in rear of each needle, said plate being narrower than the groove and engaging a folded strip lying in said groove.
4; A presser foot for sewing machines comprising a foot portion having agroove in its under face, needle openings arranged in a line diagonal to the line of feed and extending through the foot portion into .said groove adjacent the respective side edges thereof, a yielding plate carried by said presser foot and extending underneath the same, said plate being narrower than {the groove and engaging a. folded strip lying in the groove, said groove terminating directly in rear of'the rear needle, and said yielding plate being extended between the nausea needles and terminating ubstantially at the end of said groove.
5. A presser foot for sewing machines rectly in rear of the rear needle opening,
a spring plate carried by the presser foot extension and extending underneath said foot, said plate being narrower than the groove and terminating at the rear end of the groove.
6. The combination with stitch form ing mechanism, a presser foot and feed dog, of a folder for folding one edge of a strip onto the body thereof and a yielding member carried by one of said elements and adapted to engage the folded edge of the strip both in front and in rear of the stitching point for retaining the folded strip in line with the feed until said strip is stitched.
7. In combination with a stitch forming mechanism, including a pair of needles, a presser foot and a feed dog, of a folder for folding one edge of a strip on the body thereof, and a yieldable plate carriedby one of said elements and extending rearwardly between the needles for retaining the folded strip in line with the line of feed, until said strip is stitched.

The combination with a presser foot having a rcarwardly extending groove in its under face for receiving a folded strip of fabric, of a folder for said strip extending forwardly from the front end of said foot and having its delivery end merging with the front end of said groove, and a yielding member carried by one of said elements and extending substantially to the rear end of said groove for retaining the folded strip within the groove until stitched.
9. The combination with a presser foot having a rearwardly extending groove in its under face for receiving a folded strip of fabric, of a folder for said strip extend ing forwardly from the front end of said foot and having its delivery end merging with the front end of said groove, and a yieldable plate carried by said folder and having its free end passing the delivery end of the folder and terminating in the rear end of said groove for retaining the folded strip within the groove until stitched.
