The thread catcher may be actuated after a replenishing operation from any convenient source-0f power,
has an arm 12 thereon. which. 11 ion cull and in the present instance, is illustrated as operated from the picking mechanism.
The above characteristics of the inventlon and other features thereof will best be made clear from the following description and accompanying drawings of one form of means for carrying the'invention into practical cf-- feet, it being understood that the particulars of the means employed may be varied withoutdeparting from the true scope of the invention which is defined by the claims.
lln the. drawings Figure l is a front elevation at one side of a fillingreplenishing loom of the Northrop type," showing the present invention associated therewith;
. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of suiiicient parts of such loom showing the relation of the present invention thereto;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; and
Fig. t is a detached detail ofga good, practical form of thread catcher and its guide.
The loom frame 1, having mounted thereon the usual filling feeder or hopper 2 carrying the reserve filling carriers or bobbins 3, the ratchet 4t and the means-for turning the feeder to bring a new filling carrier into positi on for transfer after a filling replenishmg .operation, may be of the usual type. Likewise, the transferrer 5 having the d0wnwardly-extei'iding and connected arm 6 r0 vided with the pivoted member or arm to be actuated by the hunters mounted on the .lay 9, ma
be as usual inthis well-known form of ii ling-replenishing loom, and being well understood by those skilled in the art specificand detailed description thereof is unnecessary. a
Looms of this general character have been provided with means to part or sever the old filling between the cloth 'selvage and shuttle upon call for filling replenishment, and such means is typified herein by the part .10, the end portion of which may constitute the thread-parting means and a shuttle feeler. The shuttlefeeler and parter may be of any appropriate design, one form of which is "indicated in Patent No. 718,957, and the purpose. of such thread parter, so far as the present invention is concerned, is to sever or.
part the thread between the cloth selvuge and shuttle, when the filling is to be changed.
In looms or" this type, he transfer shuft 11 for filling replcnishn'ient, places the shuttle feeler and thread parter in position to perform their respective functions, and us these features of structure and operation are well known to those skilled-in the art, a more detailed illustration and description thereof is herein unnecessary, since the particulars constitute no essential part of 'the present invention.
The lay 9 carries the usual shuttle box 13 at the replenishing side of the loom, and a corresponding shuttle box at the opposite end of the lay, that at the replenishing side being provided with a bottom slot 14: through which the filling carrier 3 in the shuttle may be discharged when the new filling carrier is transferred from the feeder to the shuttle upon call for filling replenishmerit. Extending down from the slotted bottom portion of the shuttle box, as indicated in Fig. 2, there is usually placed a guide or chute 15 over which the discharged filling carrier, as indicated. by dotted lines, Fig. 1, travels after being ejected from the shuttle. The parts so far described are, or may be, of usual character and crmstrucl imi.
l vhen filling replenishment is efi'ected in a 100m of this general character, the filling so that on the nextor following picks, this filling end is liable to be carried into the siderable length.
shed and cause imperfect cloth to be woven. The present invention, therefore, aims to efi'ect a complete withdrawal of this filling end to thereby insure that on the subsequent pick or picks, production of perfect cloth will continue. In carrying out this aspect of the invention. a device is provided to engage the old filling between-the shuttle-box and the discharged filling carrier or bobbin and move in a general downward direction relative to the shuttle-box, so that the filling end may be comple ely withdrawn from the shuttle and shuttle-box even though of con- The device, which for identification will hereinafter be termed a thread catcher, is preferably given a swinging movement in the arc of a circle transversclyof the loom. about a center below the lay or shuttle-box so that be filling end is whipped or suddenly wiilulrznrn from the shuttle and shuttle-box. , usual in this type of lO3I11,i;l1QlClJ Y aising the block s3 upon the arm 39 ntending from the sleeve 30, and placing said block in position to be struck by the actuating finger 37 connected to the pick rock shaft Q20, the construction being: such that upon call for filling replenishment, the parts .willbe operatively positioned so that on the pick followingreplenishment, the thread catcher will be actuated to nngage andwhip the thread of the discharged carrier orholder from the shuttle b( X and shuttle;

Inasmuch as the block 43 in raised on the call for filling replenishment, and the latter f operation takes place when tl. e lay is in its sulistantially froiit position, as indicated in Fig. 2, it is found COIIVOHlC'li to provide means to maintain the block '43 in its raised position as the lay moves,rearwardly', and until the picking mechanism lnis acted. As
one means to this end, there is secured to the side. of the loom frame by sn itablc means 45, a bracket 46 shown in-detatl in Pig. 3,
having a b nt end portion i7 tlii'ough which,

- the spring '50 expands and carries; the holding head 49 into pos'rtion below the block 43, and thus insures a propenposit ion of that a block for contact by the actuating finger 37 of-the pieking mechanism. be noted that the thread catcher remains qi'iiescent during the normal operation of th; loom and while a sufficient supply of tilting is present in the shuttle; but on the 02.11 for replenishment, the thread catcher actuating means is operatively positioned to move the thread catcher and cause it to engage and withdraw the old filling flCJl the shuttle box and shuttle. It will also be noted that such withdrawal of the old titling is effected through the active movement of the thread catcher and is not dependent alone npon the backward moveinent of the lay. An important feature of this invention is the fact that the thread catcher moves relatively to the shuttle box in ii'ithdrawing or whipping the old filling end therefrom. and that this movement is in a direction awayrfroin or downward with respect to the shuttlebox. thereby imparting a direct pull upon the thread. By mounting the thread catcher in the manner described, and actuating the same from suitable means. such as the picking mechanism, the old filling thread is suddenly whipped from the shuttle box and shuttle 'at or just after the time the shuttle itself is moved by tltc'picking mechanism, and the whip-like action oi the thread catcher issuch that after withdrawing the old filling thread from the shuttle box and shuttle. it throws the same downward and leaves itself free from engagement therewith.
